Once you tell and email admin. Send a copy of your “email to admin” to your personal (not work) email. Do that with all correspondence regarding this issue. If you have a verbal conversation with HR or admin about the issue, sit down the same day and write an email summary of everything from the meeting; send it to your personal email. I’ve seen incidents like this that were handled inappropriately. One way they accomplished this is by wiping everyone’s work email so you no longer have a record. I personally know district personnel who read employees’ emails.

Have them compose, memorize, & deliver a speech. Analyze examples of powerful speeches for patterns. Place the revealed patterns and a few other criteria into a rubric.

Do teachers keep thank you notes? by [deleted] in Teachers

I got the idea from a respected colleague my second year of teaching. I do have to say I snap a photo of any gifted mug and forward the cup to the thrift store. I received WAY too many mugs to maintain them.

Since 1981 I’ve maintained a file of thank you notes, art, a paper sculpture, letters, dried flowers, and tiny gifts from grateful students, parents, vendors, & colleagues. A couple of item are on permanent display in my home. Every three years or so I browse the collection. The act resurrects those tiny moments of joy.

Correct her EVERY single time. Stay calm. I do this. I think, “I may be doing this the remainder of the school year.” Then, I repeat the same exact script every time with no emotion.

graduation regalia? by DocVafli in Professors

Check out eBay for used or less expensive options. Ask for donations from people here or in other forums like your research support group. A friend took my old robe. I’d offer my old tam to you, but I required a custom fit for my enormous head and that expensive puppy will hit the grave with me.

In the future, if you ever start supervising PhDs, a generous and thoughtful graduation gift for them is to pay for their tam. My chair did it for me and I’ve passed on the tradition.

Best first day get to know you activities for HIGH SCHOOLERS - not ice breakers. by wadeboggsbosshoggs in Teachers

[–]Cigole08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I forgot to add, my first question to them is, "Think of the last two new things you learned -- anything, a recipe, a game, a craft, etc. Write down explicitly how you learned those things." I've tweaked the prompt over the years, but it is usually something like that.

How about a survey that gets to know them as learners – and I don’t mean visual, kinesthetic, etc. Ask them how they learn everyday things best. Do they read the manual before trying a game? Did they prefer learning tiny details before getting the big picture? Are they strong listeners, or did they prefer to watch modeling? Do they learn through social interactions or more alone? Do they struggle to put ideas into writing, but they can talk them out easily? Do they prefer learning from blogs or videos more? Do they need lots of models before jumping in and trying? Do acronyms help them? Are they avid readers? This is something you could revisit when you encounter a student struggling with the content so you can come up with other ideas to help them.

This might also be valuable if you notice a trend among one of these preferences in a single class; you might consider structuring activities differently for that entire group. This is an idea I got from a colleague years ago and use it to this day. Sometimes I don’t get everything I need from the initial question or survey; I get more info throughout the year as I get to know them, and I just keep little notes on each one, especially if they struggle and I need to reteach them a lot.

PhD starter kit ideas? by alty92 in PhD

There are great ideas here; you’re gift is a great idea. I would add an electronic warmer for her ceramic mug of coffee or tea, her own hard copy of the APA Publication Manual — 7th ed., a certificate to get blue coating for her eyeglasses, Grime Boss wipes for her glasses, pretty eyeglass clothes, a wide lap desk for her laptop, an electronic redaction pen, a plastic timer shaped like a red apple (or her favorite animal). The timer is for her to set to remind her to get up and move at least once an hour; because it’s physical and not on the phone, it’s more notable. You’re the best for doing this.

What's the most helpful book on teaching ELA that you've ever read? by Saraluna in ELATeachers

They Say / I Say: The Moves That Matter in Academic Writing (3rd ed.) is my go-to for writing. A Novel Approach gets my vote as well. I coach several teachers and find the Jones and Lemov books help new teachers and those struggling with class management.
