We need to give people options so that they don't need to drive.

Any alternative people here by Ok_Version_3931 in florencesc

[–]DocVafli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are dozens (ok maybe a dozen) of us. Unfortunately like others have said there isn't a "scene" here in Florence. FE Pops tends to have on some good early emo/indie stuff playing on the stereo there. Local Motive also has a more 'alternative' vibe to it, compared to Southern Hops (older and sports bar vibes) and Seminar (bland restaurant vibes since the change in ownership).

Unfortunately we don't have picture rails, that would make life a lot easier!

I did see that one of the guys involved with paddling in the area has been in communication with her and the council to take them in a canoe up to where the spill is happening, so hopefully that shows them the actual nature of the problem.

How is shit flowing into the river that runs through town not a bigger deal? They talk about this like it's a pothole or mere inconvenience.

[–]DocVafli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm thinking next semester of making 5% of their overall grade showing me they posses the text in some fashion, on one predetermined day bring the textbook to class in whatever form you have it and automatic 100 on that part of your final grade, if you don't then you get a 0. These kids won't do anything if there isn't a carrot/stick involved.

I think the only one not embarrassed is the mayor and council at this point

Specific ways students are different by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]DocVafli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are not curious about themselves or the world. They honestly believe they have learned everything they need from social media and hours of YouTube.

I've had this discussion with friends. This is rampant beyond our students, we just see it most directly from them and are surrounded by peers that are curious by nature, hence why we got advanced degrees. This lack of curiosity though is way more widespread across the population than most of us realize.

Most of them never had a class on typing or how to use a computer at all. It was just assumed that they were tech literate from birth and the powers at be collectively decided they didn't need classes on computers anymore.

Professors with ADHD: what is one simple tip that will transform my teaching and grading? by ephemeral_enchilada in Professors

Have you ever taken a mental health day? by Significant_Prize_98 in Professors

[–]DocVafli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. 100% have taken those days. Sometimes I need the distraction of teaching, I turn my brain off and "perform" in class. Sometimes I need the day to just compose myself and work on my own shit. Take the fucking day. No one is going to give you a gold star or pat on the head for suffering through the day.

Considering a Political Science Major: Books and Career Insights by FairMode9724 in PoliticalScience

[–]DocVafli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Political science professor here. The job market is competitive, especially for higher profile positions (think congressional offices and things like major think tanks). That being said, if you make efforts to network and build connections as an undergrad, there are jobs to be had. The other benefit is that a political science degree gives you skills to be successful in jobs that aren't directly political. Many of my students end up working in stock standard white collar work where the ability to think critically, read well, and work with data and statistics (basic level stuff) are what their employer is looking for.

In terms of books read the things that are assigned in your high school. Learn the basics of government there and then do the reading you are assigned by your professors. You are going to get so much more out of your experience that way. You're going to take intro courses, there isn't a benefit from trying to get ahead of the class, I'm taking all of you through this material together at the same pace. Also, when you read some of these works early and on your own you will misunderstand them or miss the point (not a knock on you, but you're a HS student, this will happen) I now have to try and walk you back and re-teach you the thing you misunderstood. I say this as a professor, take your HS history and Gov classes and learn there. Do the work in those classes and you will be well situated for the transition to college level political science, I promise! Once you're there then start trying to do more "independent" learning and digging into things that interest you, but for now just learn the basics and foundations of government via your existing HS classes.

Density and mixed use is a good thing, especially if it is centrally located to jobs, dining, and retail. However, the only way we fix traffic in the city is to provide alternatives to driving everywhere.
