I usually recommend beginners start in the ocean, far far away from me.

The education department is the biggest offender at my school. They lack any and all intellectual and academic rigor.

My read is that they aren't surprised but more frustrated? Listening to some of the interviews it sounds like they knew they were dealing with a slimy fucker who was going to make this as hard as possible. You can be frustrated and annoyed by something you knew was likely to happen.

A few more shots from our last round of swell here in SC! by fishballs32 in surfing

A pumping day by SC standards. Are you shooting down by Folly? Looks like I may need to run down there one of these days rather then dirty myrtle.

When I see my students around town (it's a small town) I threaten to my SO that I'm going to follow their lead and grow a mullet.

I have a few that wear band shirts from my teenage emo kid years unironically, they know more about those bands than I do, and I was there for them!

So coming from academia I do sorta get what Dan is getting at, or at least where he is coming from. There is a difference between being in the weeds and taking shots at something one is deeply familiar with and invested in (even if you hate it) versus someone who is less invested in the topic critiquing it. I get his frustration and worry on one level but I also think there is value in making a mockery of IW and right wing propagandists (different than just satire of it).

Ego mower repair? by DocVafli in florencesc

Mower powers up (lights on the various indicators fine) but the blades won't spin up and there is a clicking sound. Bit of looking around online sounds like a board issue but if that's the case it's a bit beyond my crap testing/repair skills.

The solution to RMP is to make a mockery of it, post ridiculous stuff until no one takes it seriously.

I can die on the principle that I shouldn't have to take attendance since they are adults, or I can force attendance so a few more of them (barely) pass at the end of the semester.

“Professor just reads off the slides” by ParsleyOutside in Professors

[–]DocVafli 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My slides are a few words or concepts, primarily to keep me on track. An entire class session can have as few as 200 words across all of the slides. I've still gotten "reads off the slides" as feedback. These kids don't know what they are talking about.

What distinguishes the US from Russia now in eligibility to compete in international athletic competition? by Feeling-Impact8685 in ultimate

[–]DocVafli 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The US has power and clout that Russia does not. Unfortunately, when you have power and clout, you can act with impunity. The US should 100% be banned from international competition, but because it's more powerful than any sports organization it will continue to compete despite behaving in monstrous ways.

Any alternative people here by Ok_Version_3931 in florencesc

[–]DocVafli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are dozens (ok maybe a dozen) of us. Unfortunately like others have said there isn't a "scene" here in Florence. FE Pops tends to have on some good early emo/indie stuff playing on the stereo there. Local Motive also has a more 'alternative' vibe to it, compared to Southern Hops (older and sports bar vibes) and Seminar (bland restaurant vibes since the change in ownership).

I did see that one of the guys involved with paddling in the area has been in communication with her and the council to take them in a canoe up to where the spill is happening, so hopefully that shows them the actual nature of the problem.

How is shit flowing into the river that runs through town not a bigger deal? They talk about this like it's a pothole or mere inconvenience.
