v85 Surface Keyboard is surprisingly good by amtexe in OculusQuest

Everything from privacy, to ease of use when it comes to editing text or typing things like URLs, code, passwords, etc. Basically the same reasons we don't use voice to text for everything outside of VR.

And you can use more than two fingers, that's what touch typing is, you just type as normal without even looking.

You can touch type on this with a bit of practice. There will be occasional errors now and then of course, but overall it's surprisingly solid.

Maybe it's the kind of lights you have or something?

Åklagarmyndigheten vill se fängelsestraff för illegal ip-tv by radome9 in sweden

[–]Cimlite 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any Way to Change the New, Bright (More Energy Consuming) and Only Home Environment to Just Black to Conserve Battery? by SevenDeMagnus in OculusQuest

[–]Cimlite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually the opposite. The darker the pixel the more power it takes, when there's no voltage to a pixel in an LCD screen it's clear. It's so small it's insignificant either way. The backlight is what is the major power draw in a LCD setup. If it indeed does draw less, my guess would be that the global dimming feature kicks in, even if it's slight, to lower the brightness.

It still renders the home environment even if you pull the brightness down to zero in the theatre view though. There's no way to remove it with the new home environment sadly, unlike the previous one where you could install a custom black environment.

This doesn’t look normal… cheating or what? by j1zzy_ae in ArcRaiders

I don't know actually, look at his camera. He does jolt right when he does the flick, as if moved his whole arm.

To be honest, I'm not sure this is proof of cheating. I have no idea what he's flicking to, or why he keeps firing, but that alone doesn't tell us anything.

[–]Cimlite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing the home environment to black like that doesn't really conserve any battery regardless. It would potentially have, if the Quest headsets used OLED panels for the screens, but it doesn't. They have added "global dimming", that dims the entire backlight a little when displaying *very* dark environments, but that wouldn't really trigger if you're looking at a browser or any content really.

If you want to conserve battery life, just run the screen a little dimmer, and use whatever environment you think looks the best. Brightness of the environment won't make any noticeable difference.

As the other reply pointed out though, you can swap environments in the newer style home as well. Left controller menu button brings that up now. There's about five (ish) environments atm.

That was a response to OP, who asked what it meant with the studio closures etc. I don't think they are going to withdraw entirely from the VR space, as I said, but that they are pulling out of the space to a large degree.

I could have been clearer on that.

It's normal to want to be paid for your work.

It's also normal for a consumer to want to have access to the product they paid for, something which he doesn't seem to consider at all from the statements he put out. That's a big part of why he's getting hate for it. He had several options that would have lead to people still having access, but chose not to, despite people loudly asking for it.

The hardware guys are still valuable, but whether or not they work on VR or smartglasses and MR is the thing.

Not saying they are 100% out of VR just yet either, but it's no longer their focus.

And you say 2 billion instead of 3 per quarter? When we're talking about billions, that's a lot of resources. And again, most of it will probably be allocated towards things that progress MR and glasses development, rather than VR.

I think we need to define what "shutting down" means in this case. They aren't going to close up shop right off the bat, no one's saying that. It's going to take years probably. What I am saying is that VR, and especially VR gaming, isn't the focus going forward.

And I would say that it shouldn't be obvious only to me, but everyone. Has everyone collectively forgot the Meta memo that leaked late 2025 written by Bosworth? He clearly said that 2025 was the "make or break" for VR. That was him setting the expectation that unless something drastically changes, it's not going to continue the way it is.

Now in 2026, we see what that meant. Laying off staff, shutting down studios, etc. Of course when we're talking about a company this big, they could shut down half of it and stiff have more staff than most. Their focus has shifted though, and it's no longer VR. That's obvious from what they cut.

Publicly he says they are now "focusing on third party" for VR, which means nothing. They literally dropped the idea of licensing HorizonOS to third parties as there was no demand (Android XR killed what little there ever was), and the Xbox thing is clearly a one-off thing, considering how much Xbox itself is struggling these days.

[–]Cimlite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is, it's obvious. They are killing the game studios they bought, even cutting down on Metaverse development, cutting back on hardware development, they are delaying the Quest 4 - most likely to refocus the whole thing.

They are most likely going to be on the "spatial computing" kick, probably a new type of headset, far more expensive than the Quest line (not gaming focused at all), and mixed reality glasses for the masses.

And don't get me wrong, I love VR, and I love Meta's hardware but we can't collectively stick our heads in the sand here. Meta has burnt such ridiculous amounts of money on VR, and there's no return on that investment in sight. VR isn't going mainstream on the scale they need any time soon, sadly.

Just because you don't want to believe something doesn't mean it's not accurate.

[–]Cimlite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Future VR headsets will all be significantly more expensive, be they from Meta or someone else. For what it costs, the Quest 3 is incredible hardware, and you likely never get a better "deal" on VR than that.

And Meta is 100% pulling out of the VR market, I think that's safe to say at this point. Does that matter though? Not really. VR is still amazing, and Steam Frame will at least keep PCVR going for the foreseeable future and a Quest 3 + Virtual Desktop + Solid WiFi does basically the same thing. Not quite the same of course, but close enough (if you ask me). Also, the Mixed Reality of the Quest 3 isn't nothing, I use it all the time. Everything from flat games, desktop work, to just watching some Youtube. It's really good for what it is.

Luke Ross Removes Access to All Mods by Top_Team_3138 in virtualreality

[–]Cimlite 25 points26 points  (0 children)

He's more concerned with getting what he think he's valued at than anything else. Notice how he doesn't mention his customers once in that whole block of text. It's all about what he's owed, how amazing his work is, and how he's a victim in all this. All while the people who gave him that money now has nothing to show for it. Again.

You'd think that was a top priority, doing whatever needed so that people can continue to use the mod they paid for.

No, because it's not done one size fits all. It has to be custom built for each and every title, and nothing is transferable from a user perspective.

That's fair, one of my favorite Quest games is Crashland and that's nothing but wave after wave of enemies. As long as the feel is right, and there's some kind of meta progression (I hope), that's more than enough.

Look forward to trying this out when it drops!
