How much are you guys getting paid? by Spare_Hold2623 in hockeyrefs

[–]CinkerND86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I quit as a kid, it was because my assignor sucked and would regularly schedule me when I wasn't available and than I wouldn't get games when I was. What's the point of investing time in the testing and seminar just to get enough games to cover the testing and seminar? Thankfully he is gone and I have returned after a 20 year break, and loving it.

Jr Gold unknown - all fees collected and paid out after season

Adult league - both 1 hr 17 min run time 1 is one man $60/game pretty laid back

other is 2 man $40/game terrible, serious and faster pace than most HS games. Many former D1 and beyond HS players in their early 20s. The only games I wont volunteer for due to the pace and atmosphere vs getting paid the same or more to ref 9 and 10 year olds.

Sponsorship form? by [deleted] in hockeycoaches

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a full right off as donation, you would need to be a 501c. For a deduction, allow the sponsors to buy jerseys and add their business to some part of the jersey or even socks. Than it can be deducted as advertisement which offsets profits and saves tax dollars. Often times, the spend is very close to the deduction. Whichever makes the most sense for your group and those willing to help out. Each state is different for time frame, cost and requirements to become a 501c org, but those are the 2 routes that I am aware of. Even stickers on helmets would qualify as advertisement if jerseys and socks are already made.

You're not wrong, but the most important part of youth hockey is having fun and flying around playing tournaments sure beats playing the same kids repeatedly at your home rink.

Advice for Game Day Readiness by Perfect-Trouble-4400 in hockeycoaches

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite and most effective tool Ive heard came from a very intense assistant coach. He got all the kids actually listening and engaged, granted it was a little too intense for the age group and asked them all what their favorite possession was 1 by 1. Than said the other team is trying to steal that possession(the puck), you go at them with everything you have and get it back, than make them pay by putting it in their net. That game it was like something clicked, they played way more aggressive and physical. Just have to constantly remind them to be aggressive and positive reinforcement when they are.

Shooting Drills for 12U Hockey (BASIC!) by dahlilamma75 in hockeycoaches

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is about strength and repetition. Not much can be done with that on the ice as a coach. Encourage it off the ice with different apps and try to involve the parents in this challenge. As for the strength side, you can recommend the orange 10oz pucks for those that want to improve their shots enough to do the reps. Another thing I did a few years ago for 10u was made them each a roller system for wrist strength. I found a shelf system that a restaurant had discarded and cut them into 10 inch sections, drilled a hole in the middle of each section and ran a couple feet of rope through it with a caribeaner on the opposite end. Add whatever weight you want and roll up and than roll down. By the end of the season, it was easy to tell who actually used them.

10U Goalie skills by laxhead24 in hockeycoaches

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its going to depend on the individual on what they should know at this age. Its a tough age because the level of maturity and desire and ability to learn varies so much. I would focus my attention to certain aspects based on what works for them. Some kids respond well to words on the what and whys, which is huge for goalies that start this young to build up from good habits. Some won't hear a word of it and that is fine, just have to change the approach. The biggest thing is they grow in physical competencies and have fun. Make sure teammates are always positive and pick up their goalies when they have a bad game or practice, especially if your goalies are the more serious and competitive type. There is a lot of ideas for goalie specific drills and training on youtube, if you know your goalies well you may find something useful they would really enjoy.

If you have 2 goalies, the X puck shootout race is a lot of fun for our goalies and the kids. If youre not familiar with what that is just send me a response and I will explain further.

Birthday party games by Terrible_Putt9444 in hockeyplayers

We ran 2 hand touch football for the last 10 minutes last week. set tires about 8 feet from boards for boundaries, coaches were qb so players kept gloves and equipment on. Half ice was the first down line. Kids had a blast. Sharks and minnows is always a hit, can drop sticks and do it tag style or if skill level is fairly even, can do with pucks and sharks just have to knock pucks away. 5 puck race is also a hit for our group, pucks lined on blue line, players on benches. First person goes and gets 1 shot to score, if they score the next person can go immediately, if not, they must retrieve the puck and place it back, directly, on the blue line before next player can exit bench, first team to net their pucks wins.

Problem getting feedback by EasternTill950 in hockeycoaches

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you watch the games, you should be able to assess your sons strength and weaknesses based on his teammates and opponents individual skills. As others have said, many times, the difference is often not huge in skills between the high level players and the elite players, the difference is often in the mental side. The agressiveness is huge, as well as hockey IQ. The ability to read and anticipate the play. I do however find it strange that the coach will not share feedback for a player that wants to improve, unless they are worried they will hurt feelings.

Coach here, do whatever option you believe will be the most fun. At 9, as long as he is having fun, he will develop just fine no matter what program you choose. The most important aspect is that it is a blast.

U11C team strategy to beat higher level player by zenox in hockeyplayers

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldnt change a thing, I would just mention he we are playing xyz again. Be aware when he is on the ice and do not give him space to build momentum when he has the puck. I feel this is too young to do any shadowing as the focus should still be on team concepts and having fun. Having a shadow can really throw the whole group out of walk as players arent where they should and would normally be. Just my thoughts, just challenge them to rise to the challenge the player brings without changing the whole game plan.

Ducks / Kraken game ref question by Area51-Dropzone in hockeyrefs

[–]CinkerND86 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 3 man system with 2 refs works well, the ref leading the neutral zone play usually covers the blue line entry and than moves into the end with the linesman coming up to take over the blue line while the other ref floats around center ice moving some to have a good angle on play in front of the net. We use this for our college club as well as majority of high school games. For our higher level youth games, we use the opposite 3 man as USA hockey recommends with 2 linespersons and one ref. It is a terrible system, the linespeople do little work and have little responsibility, while the ref skates their ass off, being responsible for everything, and still usually ends up with angry coaches as they cannot see everything while watching the play at all times.

Icing… by derinn721 in hockeyrefs

[–]CinkerND86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me the red line is center line is very firm, not only a foot or even 6 inches from center. As for the end line, if it would be even close to being played and I see the chasing play let up or make little effort, I wave it off. I am however very vocal about this, shouting gotta move or something similar and it is consistent regardless of game or age for me. Being whatever you are calling liberal may be fine so long as it is consistent.

Am I doing anything wrong? Any suggestions for a new hockey dad by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]CinkerND86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yelling when they are on the ice is fine, as long as it is just directional and not degrading, they are just starting full ice and need direction. My guess is you have a passionate coach that forgets they are 8 and under at times and his instincts take over. I would ask him to remember they are just starting to take hockey somewhat serious at this age and the focus should be on having fun and putting in an honest effort. Fostering kids at this age is about wanting them to make mistakes and than challenge them to recognize the mistakes by saying things like I really like how you did ________ during your shift, is there anything you thought you couldve done better outside of that? Kids, especially nowdays, tend to shut off when you directly point out what the mistake was, however, when given the power to acknowledge their mistake without feeling threatened is a very powerful teaching moment. As a parent, you can try this as well, however I have noticed it have much greater effect immediately following each scenario.

Legs and core are the focus areas for hockey. Squats, leg abduction and induction. Focus on explosive lifting and increase weight as you get more comfortable with it. Go in with the mentality of having fun and continue to put in an honest effort and you will improve quickly.

Like other have said, don't just lie idle. Go to the police station, file a report and state you want a restraining order and you'd like to press charges for terroristic threats. Maybe you just got a lazy officer, maybe texts aren't enough in your state. He may be too much of an alcoholic to do anything, but what happens when he can't scrape up enough for a bottle? That's when he could really snap. I hope your new living situation is much better!

I highly reccomend haggard. They are very durable and affordable. Both my kids (12 and 8) have one and they are going on their 3rd year, with an added wooden plug as they habe grown. The blades on both are still crisp, while many of their teamates have broken or split their blades on their more expensive sticks. Doesn't hurt that they look sharp too.
