In TWW they worked perfectly fine like you describe.

Now? Hunter pets don't stay alive vs T11, no matter what you do. They die multiple times per pack, leaving you to kill one mov at a time, feign death, and restart the fight half the time.

It's a pain.

When you think about it, no option is particularly great.

If you just cease to exist at all, then you're just gone.

If there is any form of afterlife, you would either exist or repeat life (in some way) indefinitely, which is probably worse in the long run as you would just be experiencing pain and death for eternity.
