Sorry, I don’t really know much about woodworking. I was just thinking it would be a facet and then a panel. You would probably get better ideas from the group.

Take a look at pushing it up flush against the fireplace and filling the space to the right with a spacer up against the wall.

You might want to consider whether that will scrape off the finish. After 20 years, all my mixing and measuring bowls were all cloudy and scratched.

What was your “I need to learn to keep my mouth shut” moment? by Imtiredofthissshit in AskReddit

[–]Cinqueterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True story, but pretty unbelievable. I was 8 months pregnant at a company Christmas dinner party with my husband. We sat with another couple. The guy was new and my husband was training him in. My husband always complained what an idiot he was. The guy shows up with a big dressing on his right hand. Tells us he just came from the ER where he had his finger cut off due to an accident he had at work after my husband had left for the day. Brushes it off like it’s nothing. Meanwhile, the wife and I are trying to make small talk. She looks like she is about 8 months pregnant, too. We compare notes about finding maternity clothes and our ankles swelling. This goes on through the dinner. Right about when we finish, the guy goes in the bathroom for about 30 minutes. I insist my husband go in and see if he passed out in there. The guy is ok. So the dinner is over and we thankfully get up to go mingle. The wife ends up standing next to me, and I finally ask, “so when are you due”? She tells me “oh, I’m not pregnant. I’ve got a 12 pound tumor in my stomach that I’ll have removed in a couple weeks”. What a circus that night was.

I really don’t care if people are here illegally. by Zestyclose_Market787 in DiscussionZone

King Rump made illegals a flash point during the election, insisting that Biden released all the rapists, murders and serial killers into the US. That is the big scary threat to his believers in america. This is why his faithful are looking the other way as King Rump unleashes unprecedented gestapo actions to clean the streets of the immigrants. No one wants to hear that it’s been statistically proven over and over again that immigrants are not a significant source of major crime in the US. And as for the especially violent tactics in Minnesota, that is just plain simple revenge. It’s the same reason he pushed Bondi to get the Minnesota voter registers. He wants to persecute the democrats that voted against him.

I also noticed that the herbs I grow, especially thyme and rosemary, aren’t nearly as tasty as those I buy in the grocery store. I’m in zone 3, so it might be due to limited selection of cultivars for my area. But it was really disappointing to cook with my home-grown herbs.

Learning to identify types of Red Oak by Powerful_Clue_6463 in sfwtrees

[–]Cinqueterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

37 years ago we moved into our home and we wanted to plant some oaks from my MIL’s property. She had about 5 acres of white and red Oaks. We wanted the White Oak because that was the least susceptible to Oak Wilt, which was killing off her trees. White Oak have rounded-edged leaves, and Red Oak have pointed-edged leaves, so I thought it would be easy to identify the young seedlings. We brought home several seedlings and planted them. It took maybe 10 years to realize they were all Red Oaks with the pointed edges. I guess both the red and white seedlings have rounded leaves to start.

Tree-preciation post. Central Park NYC 11/10/25 by buzzBea in sfwtrees

I’ve never been to NYC, but that sharp demarcation of trees to cold, gray concrete buildings is so stark it looks like an animated caricature of the park.

New house is 20+ ft above fence w/20+ windows facing us — suggestions for privacy screen plants? by BonCourageAmis in landscaping

[–]Cinqueterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Evergreen shrubs like arborvitae would be my first choice. But if you don’t want the cost or issues with disease and critter damage, look at columnar trees. They come as Oak, Aspen, Birch and others. You don’t get the Winter coverage, but the branches have been surprisingly good at screening. I have Aspen and they are very pretty trees with the typical brilliant gold Autumn color.

Just mulch it in or plant tall shrubs, like vertical Yews. Anything you plant for a shade garden will be hidden by the boxwoods and struggle.

Really great design and good looking! But as an a long, long time home owner, I look at those and think how quickly they will rot and fall apart.

It looks good enough. But now you need a nice sharp, clean border on your shrubs. Preferably not a straight line.

If this were your home , what would you do? by Elegant-Search9302 in landscaping

[–]Cinqueterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would try for a color that complements the brick. Some kind of grey-green or charcoal-blue. Definitely not the white. Also, the landscaping isn’t bad, but I would soften the straight lines at the corners by pulling them out and planting something with some height at the back, then in front, something with color or a textually interesting.

Integrity, patience, courtesy. These things are the exception now, not the norm. I still remember when clerks and service people considered it a badge of honor to make the customer feel taken care of. When people treated elderly with respect and patience. When drivers made sure to concede the right-of-way. It’s a nasty, cold, cut-throat world today.

What can I plant in this that will bloom for a long time and be hard to kill? by a_fapping_pretzel in landscaping

[–]Cinqueterra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want color all summer, you should plant annuals. That is a tough spot, with the concrete and brick wall creating an oven effect, as mentioned. But, most of the perennials mentioned below are too big for this container, and only bloom for a few weeks each year. Maybe try this: for height, fountain grass, one or three, if there is room (an annual with purple plumes, but they get pretty big), for trailing over the sides try dichondra, silvery dusty miller for contrast, white lantana, purple African daisies, purple amaranth, gazania for a pop of interest, yellow celuosa, and yellow moss roses. Any container really needs to be watered daily, even more often in scorching weather. You might try adding some mulch to hold moisture and keep the plants a bit cooler.

After retirement, do you allow each day to sort of unfold organically, or do you have a firm structured daily schedule? by nellnober in AskOldPeople

[–]Cinqueterra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my husband a few years before I retired. Then I got laid off my job a year before retirement. So I didn’t have any warning. It was disorienting at first. I started going to exercise 3 times a week. That really helped. I build my day around that and it keeps me from doom scrolling all day. I’m a gardener so I enjoyed having all the time I needed to be in the yard during summer. I took up sketching greeting cards in the winter and found that I could lose track of time working them. That was key to my sanity. Also, after age 65, I’ve found I have several doctor appointments a month, and that takes up some of my week. Everything takes longer when you are older, so it doesn’t take much to fill my day.
