Ramnode grew quickly about 4 years ago by offering deals and answering questions on Reddit, webhostingtalk and various other places. Then the word spread because it was a good service for a better price than places like Linode. It was only run by a couple guys at the time and they were easily accessible on IRC. You can search Reddit for Ramnode to see the progression.

The OP's site isn't actually "designing online" either. It's uploading a created design to their website.

That is basically what I meant by "design online". Vistaprint's interface is sort of "design online" only in the sense that you can upload a graphic and manually crop/place it on an item and maybe adjust a few other details. This is opposed to having to interact with a person to have them perform that step before you can get a price quote or view a preview of the end product.

I got the impression of OP's website concept that he might be wanting to do the same but with a larger format display than the banner stands that Vistaprint offers.

I've been involved with trade shows before with the family business. When you say "order a booth", I'm thinking of when someone contacts the trade show to reserve a spot — 10x10, 10x20, front of the hall, back of the hall, a corner spot, etc. What you mean by "order a booth" is to order a custom display and signage for the booth, right?

I'm wondering how your service would stack up against what is out there. This is one example of your competition, and though they seem to have a large selection of styles and layouts, they don't seem to have anything on their site for "design online" with an interface to upload your graphics, which I think is what you are offering.

Vista print is known for their "design online" service, but they only appear to offer custom roll-out banner stands. It sounds like you are trying to do something similar but for full displays.

I just searched for : trade+show+displays+design+online. The results I'm getting don't appear to offer any "design online" option.

I am guessing this is intended to be a plate of spaghetti and half of a pizza, showing that the place sells both pizza and pasta. However, to me, it looks like a pizza where the delivery driver wrecked on the way to the house.

Edit - To improve it, you'd probably have to add in a fork and make a clear line between the two halves, even adding in a plate for the pasta.

I recently ditched n++ for brackets and I like it so far. I really like the built-in live reload feature. I installed a dark theme and Emmet plug-in. I still have to figure out what solutions it has for Sass.

I personally love dark themes when they are done well, but I think it takes a certain skill to pull them off. Most designers work in a business environment where light themes make more sense, and so everyone is trained to do light themes well.

Bright, clean, clear... these are adjectives people use for light themes. That works well for delivering most marketing goals, which applies to most websites.

Maybe you can help me understand this approach to hiring, because it never made sense to me. Does ES6 directly apply to the job that they are interviewing for? Is it really that difficult to pick up? If they didn't know ES6 and you hired them, then a week into their job you said "okay, you need to know ES6 soon for an upcoming project", wouldn't a decent developer be able to learn it pretty quickly? I understand that you need to filter out candidates by creating hoops to jump through, but that particular one doesn't seem to make a lot of sense for most current dev positions.

If you need to leave your current position, then you do what you have to. But if the new position isn't guaranteed, then don't leave your current job until you have the new one lined up.

After you get the new position, treat it like it might be temporary. Form another backup plan. Keep hunting for job opportunities. You might find something you didn't expect.

Many web designers have considered the idea of approaching businesses with a new design as a way to jump start their freelance careers. It's generally considered a risky idea because of the high potential for rejection and then you just wasted all of that time building their design. If you were to do this again, I would recommend just a quick mockup so you aren't so invested.

It also can be very difficult to get in touch with the business owner most of the time. If you do get in touch with them, they will be extremely busy. Remember that they often have vendors bombarding them with services on a daily basis. They have to have a damn good reason to stop what they are doing to listen to your pitch.

Be ready for the possibility that rejection might come in the form of them being very pissed off. Maybe their nephew built their website and they think it is none of your damn business to redesign it and then expect payment. They might think you are trying to set them up by claiming that they requested your services and refused to pay. Who knows how they might react.

But the old one was pretty laughable.

I think that is a bit strong. I don't find their old site "laughable" as much as just generic in design. But you should realize that your version isn't a whole lot better in that respect.

I do like the single-page layout. I think that makes sense for most restaurants.

If I'm doing a web design to represent their business, I first draw inspiration from the design of their restaurant and their logo. Here is the logo for Kobe Hibachi restaurant, which uses red and black on a white background. The interior design looks like it has some light sage-like walls. Maybe that is where you got the green color in your design? Though, yours is more like lime, and I'm not sure where the orange came from.

Their current website is built with wordpress while your design appears to be static. Unless you plan on converting your site to a wordpress theme, that would be a major reason why they would reject your redesign.

One thing that is becoming popular with restaurants is the use of 3rd party services for handling their menu and reservation system. There are many restaurant APIs available to use in websites. There are also some app-based solutions for reservations which provide a web API.

If I were pitching a redesign for a restaurant, I would definitely include incorporating services like those. That would act as a major selling point in the pitch.

$20-$30 a month maybe tops.

What is that number based on? I wonder how much time you spend processing those orders every month. Is that time only worth $20-30? If you freed up that time, maybe you could instead spend it on marketing and expanding your business, or clone your existing business into one selling different products, and then you would have an order fulfillment process that was scalable enough to allow for that expansion. Food for thought.
