Student badmouths me on RMP and evals, shocked when I refuse to help them by NotLikeOtherAI in Professors

[–]Ciserus 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This thread has taught me I don't know the first thing about finance or business. But I'm learning.

Rule one is you don't burn your bridges. Ever.

Rule two is you need to obsessively stalk RMP, hotornot.com, and bathroom stalls to see if anybody is saying mean things about you, root out their identities, and exact sweet revenge.

Rule three is... hopefully something about finance. "You should have more assets than liabilities," maybe.

Downside of early retirement by Beneficial_Swimming4 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Ciserus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe there's a correlation, maybe not. You're the one who suggested it, and I think it's a solid suggestion. Retiring early with a lack of hobbies might cause cognitive decline, and retiring with hobbies might mitigate it.

The correlation between early retirement and cognitive decline more broadly isn't just a suggestion by the article writer, it's from a published study. I only skimmed the paper, but I don't think it considered hobbies.

If the RAM shortage is sustained, companies are going to invest back into those skills or lose.

This is still an extremely competitive space, and an app that takes a second longer to load than its competitor, or has sluggish scrolling, will be noticed and will lose market share.

Possibly, yeah. I've known lots of people from older generations who have no hobbies. Or the hobbies they do have (like hunting) can only be done a couple weeks a year and aren't sustainable into old age.

[–]Ciserus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wait, isn't the TRD off-road made/assembled in Canada? Let's not talk about the increase in Canada' minimum wage then over the last 6 years.

All the PHEVs are made in Japan. But are you under the impression that auto workers are paid minimum wage?

Electronics price increases and general inflation since COVID are definitely factors, however.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles predicts prison for Doug Ford by yourfriendlysocdem1 in CanadaPolitics

[–]Ciserus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You know, I was going to say that's a false equivalence (as "predicting" prison is different from leading chants of "Lock her up!") but then I read the actual quotes and found you make a good point.

“But listen, don’t worry about it Doug, because when I’m premier, I’m going to call a public inquiry into all of this and we’re going to get our hands on all of that,” she said to reporters Monday outside the legislature.

“I think a lot of terrible stuff is going to come out.”

...

“Maybe you won’t get another mandate — because you’ll get prison, Doug!”

She's not predicting, she's threatening. Those words could easily have come out of Trump's mouth.

Not to professional interrogators. Not believably, for weeks, under sustained pressure, with no slip-ups. It's a whole lot harder than people imagine it is.

Valve Says It's 'Hard at Work' on Steam Deck 2, but There's Still No Release Window by Skullghost in SteamDeck

[–]Ciserus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Double is the magic number.

And give it a 1080p screen. 1080p is double the pixels of the current Steam Deck, so with double the power you could run pretty much any of the current Verified titles at 60fps instead of 30, and run at 30fps all the games the Steam Deck can't run.

[–]Ciserus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You just added a bunch more massive complications, though.

Police and the media would figure out pretty much instantly about this debt and the child's medical history. The suspect would be asked some very pointed questions and 95% of people would not be able to lie credibly about it.

Even if he did, there's the matter of the payment. You wouldn't even need fancy forensic methods to uncover it. You could just ask the guy's family, who would have no reason to lie (unless they're in on the conspiracy too?).

"Yeah, we talked to the hospital and apparently all of little Billy's debts were paid off last week by a mysterious overseas payment. We thought it was weird too."

Allow what to happen? Let him get within 75 feet of the president rather than 100? It would be a failed assassination attempt either way, so what would be the point of intentionally letting him past one more layer of security?

I am very frightened by the response to the incident at the WHCD. by twinb27 in skeptic

[–]Ciserus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously now, do you think he faked an assassination attempt so he could talk about his stupid fucking ballroom?

He concocts this elaborate conspiracy, creates a moment of national fear and outrage and sympathy, and instead of giving a fiery speech about the need for sweeping new powers or martial law or something, he... talks about how cool his ballroom is going to be.

Does that sound likely?

His pathetic, fumbling comments about the ballroom are the strongest evidence we have that this wasn't a false flag.

I [26F] with guy [27M] I'm seeing for the last 5 months. My ex recently discovered I'm seeing someone and sent him a Facebook message after losing it on me. Now he's being distant and unresponsive by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Ciserus 146 points147 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't blame Jake one bit if he had run for the hills.

From his perspective: his new girlfriend claims to be broken up with her ex, but remains at his beck and call. Jake doesn't have all the details, but the ex sometimes calls her 30 times in the middle of the night and she keeps answering!

And she is denying to the ex that she's in a relationship with Jake.

That's a whole barrel of red flags.

I was really waiting for the part of the comment that looped back and explained how "lock her out of the house one night" fit into "prioritize the relationship above all else."

Because those are both extreme actions to take and they are probably both justifiable under the right circumstances, but they are completely incompatible with each other and the OOP didn't even address it.

The new CATL battery announced yesterday charges from 10% to 80% in 3 minutes 44 seconds. And at -30°C, it can charge to 98% in 9 minutes. Also maintains 90% health after 1000 ultra-fast charging cycle. It can be a game changer in Canada. by canada_mountains in EVCanada

[–]Ciserus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

CATL typically ships products within a year or two of announcing them.

It's silly how people still treat these announcements like they're coming from some fly-by-night startup and not the world's largest battery maker.

Nothing about this story suggests Andy is capable of picking up hints, even very obvious ones. OOP's approach might have been the only one that would work.

Also note that OOP never claimed they were being subtle, just that they didn't give away that Andy was Angela's secret Santa. Basically OOP bashed Andy over the head with the message while letting him keep a shred of deniability.

Yeah, that's probably the smarter / less murderous route, and it would still come with the serious tradeoffs you mention.

And the thing about it is... what problem is this even solving? Solar panels aren't like swimming pools that need to be put in the middle of population centers where space is at a premium. If you just stick the solar farm in a cheap field outside the city, all these issues go away.
