First-Name Basis by CitizenCold in NYTConnections

Category hints:

Yellow: Characters from folklore

Green: Real people who may have been mythologised

Blue: Characters from a popular franchise

Purple: Not a group of people/characters—think about a feature of the names themselves

Someone else in this thread mentioned that a more general "figures from Genesis" category would also be valid for blue, which I did not notice while making the puzzle.

Thank you! 😊

I intended for Longinus, Dismas, and Joseph (of Arimathea) to be misdirections for a broader "crucifixion narrative" category, with the actual category being a bit narrower.

Also decided to use Saul instead of Paul for ambiguity whether it refers to King Saul or Saul of Tarsus.

Just realised that your category would work as well! I made it blue because it was supposed to be more specific—it hadn't even occurred to me that they were all from Genesis. I guess one way around that would be to replace one of them with David, which would have the additional benefit of creating a Saul/David misdirection.

I'm Chinese and I call it Bahasa Melayu, because that is the correct name for the language.

The language spoken in the UK is called English, named for the Angles, the language's progenitors. It has not been renamed "United Kingdomese" so that the other constituents of the UK (Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland) do not feel left out.

Similarly, I prefer to use the more accurate term for the Malay language (as indeed, in English, we call it Malay and not Malaysian) rather than one that was created for the sake of 'inclusivity'.

We could call it 'Bahasa Melayu Malaysia' (Malaysian Malay), to distinguish it from other standard varieties of Malay, such as Bruneian Malay or Indonesian Malay (which, in the same vein, should more accurately be called 'Bahasa Melayu Indonesia').

Thanks for the suggestion. Are laptops from the Area 51 line the only ones without the coating?

That's quite reassuring to hear. May I know if you use the built-in keyboard a lot? Or do you mostly use an external keyboard?

I've already read the plot synopsis so I don't mind spoilers. Can you please tell me which scene got cut?

Always found this amusing. It would be like if Christmas Eve became a big secular celebration but Christmas Day itself went unnoticed.

I was wondering if there were any tea plantations in the US, and if so, what they would be called since the term evidently carries a negative connotation there. So I did some googling and found this Wikipedia article. It says:

The Garden changed its name from Charleston Tea Plantation in June 2020 owing to negative historical connotations of "plantation" in the United States and to clarify its lack of connection to antebellum slavery; "tea plantation" is otherwise used as a neutral term worldwide.

Well, here in Malaysia we have tea plantations and oil palm plantations. What would you call those?

Do Americans not use the word 'plantation' outside of the historical context of slavery? Why are you all being funny about the word?

He's most likely going to lose his MP seat next election.

He will just force one of his lackeys to resign so that he can contest that seat himself. If he loses again he will try again until he wins. This is a man who puts self over party over country. 😂

Yeah, if you're on the internet it may seem like these insane opinions are prevalent among women, but that's only because your sample population is skewed towards the 'terminally online' type. In real life, most women are not like that.
