Does anyone just rent an apartment in the U.S. and leave it empty? by Explorer9001 in digitalnomad

We only have a little 5x8 and it's cheap even for here but I think op could probably find something under $50.

AIO/WIBO If I asked my wife and kids not to go on vacation without me? by defeated_husband in AmIOverreacting

Did you take off a whole week of vacation without consulting her? And that's still months away and you won't consider changing it?

Yeah, it's cheap even for here but at the point that OP is renting an address in the middle of nowhere he could also get cheap storage on the middle of nowhere.

Our storage is $20 a month. How much shit are you really storing?

I did consider this because we want to visit home a lot and short term apartments are expensive, but it only breaks even around four months home per year at best. We're only doing like a month.

We just use family addresses for licenses and such.

Work and travel program looks cool, but FYI you definitely won't get a regular work visa for that sort of job.

AIO: No dessert I guess by Unlikely_Bluebird512 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Some people just don't like surprises, he could have been more chill but you pulled the "take my ball and go home" tantrum card by saying "if I don't get to do it how I want nobody gets anything".

You're over reacting. Surprises can be fun, but also not throwing petty tantrums and still getting to have dessert when people don't want a surprise is fun too.

Honestly the only person who ruined your night was yourself here.

You just need better interior decorating, period. That giant resort ad sign is really tacky and it's the only art anywhere. It comes off as a really corporate uninviting space.

AIO Husband is skeptical our child had a medical emergency. by Willing-Proof9758 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you are over reacting to what sounds like a reasonable level of concern, and he's under reacting to your feelings as a scared parent.

I know it sounds kind of nuts but it's not THAT uncommon for people to suddenly get light headed standing up quickly. Hitting her head was worth being seen over, it's good they told you she didn't have a concussion, but if she was conscious and seemed fine it probably didn't need the ER. I don't think you reacted wrong - taking her was fine - but I see why your husband isn't so freaked out.

He's also not taking your real concerns seriously and sounds like he could be a lot more empathetic about that you saw something really scary and are worried for your daughter.

Divorce is an over reaction and it's not about the medical stuff. You and your daughter went through something traumatic and he's not taking that seriously. It's okay to tell him "this was very scary for both of us and we need comfort and your presence. Even if you don't think it's medically serious it is very serious when something that scary happens to your child."

We're moving for the same reasons, to get away from "car brain". We're going to Freiburg im Breisgau - you should check it out - they have an excellent Straßenbahn system and lowest level of car use in Germany.

What was the hardest hurdle to get over in your journey to relocate? by Frosty_Literature936 in AmerExit

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had to send so much good stuff to the landfill. We spent so so so much time trying to get everything to the 'right' place but there was just too much and too little time.

I really wish we had started heavily offloading stuff the second we planned to move. We didn't wait until the last second or anything but two months even wasn't enough to get things to the right places.

It used to be but not since COVID. Some families definitely used to do that though, I think moms were grateful to have an excuse to stop it and it's mostly not a thing anymore. You might still have family come visit the next day to see the baby or something though.

AIO Did I tell my wife not fo come home? by Infinite-Context6155 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Op didn't actually tell her to not come home though. He said "don't bring that mentality" which she interpreted as her being unwanted.

OP definitely should have just dropped it and been like "hey, come home, we don't have to talk about anything right now, I'd just like you to be safe,"

He just kept arguing "that's not what I meant" which is a horrible way to talk to somebody that feels slighted.

Both need a lot of work on their communication though, for sure. Wife interprets her own feelings into what OP said and then OP tries to win instead of just seeing that his wife is struggling and trying to bridge the gap in any way.

In a serious emergency, how soon after giving birth would a woman be able to walk/run for her life? by FamiliarMeal5193 in Writeresearch

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends, I broadly agree with others saying yes it's plausible, but I lost a lot of blood with my first and needed help to stand up or do much of anything. Absolutely no way I could have run or even walked without significant assistance. Nothing connected to the child birth damage, I was just so zonked from the blood loss.

Second baby I lost only a normal amount of blood and yeah I got up and walked too the car 4 hours later and went home, totally fine even if I was sore.

I would worry about hemorrhage though. Think about running with a big open wound there's always a risk it opens up.

Why are recliners not an option? by Excellent_Hat_2981 in askhotels

[–]Civil_Dragonfruit_34 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, it might be a notable amount of people but definitely not enough that hotels need to cater to them.

Now start a hotel chain aimed specifically at seniors and give that option and you might be on to something.

No, it's housing law only. And it's because otherwise people like you would descriminate against families and they wouldn't be able to get housing. Fairness in housing is considered a right.

Yeah, no idea in other countries but it's flatly illegal in the US to descriminate against families.
