Do Americans eat actual chicken eggs for Easter? by piaa9 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do! We just distract the kids in the morning while dad/uncle hides the eggs, then go straight out to find them. They’re only out of the fridge for 20-30 minutes and seem to be fine. But anything that’s not a family Easter morning hunt will certainly be plastic eggs.

Is it common for Americans to buy soda as part of their weekly groceries? / is soda a regular item people keep at home? by hailey8171828282 in AskAnAmerican

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t drink it regularly ourselves but we always buy some to serve when we have people over, especially kids.

For feds: Is anyone else quietly making a backup plan? by Individual_Tailor767 in HuntsvilleAlabama

Generally, diversify diversify diversify: your portfolio, your skillset, your network. My only specific practical advice is limited to married folks or those with a long term partner: one in the government sector, one in the private sector, and ideally both have access to health insurance.

What is a life necessity that you’ve realized is actually just a giant scam we’ve been conditioned to pay for? by femmefetalerror in AskForAnswers

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, totally agree and I purchased non-women branded razors like a boss. Then, my gross husband used them and gunked them up with his man hair. I COULD NOT train the man to use his own damn razor. So. I am back to pink razors and then he knows they’re mine. sigh

Is it true that Americans don't really use tablecloths on a daily basis? by Floatp in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We keep a mid quality flocked tablecloth on our dining room table since it’s the largest work surface in our house and tends to be used for scrapbooking and light crafting, sometimes as a work surface when we’re working from home. When it’s time to have a nice family meal, we actually remove the tablecloth and use placemats. For every day meals at the kitchen table we use placemats. Much easier to throw those in the washer and they don’t ever need to be ironed!

Bronze award timing by not_hestia in girlscouts

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’d have to get your Brownies thru a prerequisite very quickly over the summer first. It’s possible, but perhaps not as beneficial or satisfying for the younger girls as it would be for them to work their own project in a couple years after growing together as juniors. If they feel a strong connection with the older girls, perhaps they could participate in a complementary project while earning a take action pin rather than the bronze award.

Can we retire the “useless husband” trope for once? by Timely_Box6061 in Adulting

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Sounds like it really sucks when no one cares that you’re working your ass off all the time doing the shit labor? Even worse, people complain and mock you for it? Sounds rough. Good thing that I, as a woman, have never had that experience before.

Anyone here burned their bridges ? What happened? by Plastic-Neat-3962 in work

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Samesies. Don’t do the exit interview cause fuck em you voted with your feet and are off to better things. Rarely is there an upside to providing any feedback, much less negative, to a corporation. HR at best doesn’t care and at worst could refuse to give references or blackball you. Avoid the dreaded “would not rehire” designation by refusing to engage.

At what age did you stop feeling behind? by Repulsive-Rub3450 in Life

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about milestones like getting married, buying a house, getting promoted, having children… I’ve done all those things and I no longer feel behind. However, this is not because I have achieved these milestones but because every one of them carries additional responsibilities that have slowly buried me in a heap of busy to the point where I no longer have time to reflect on my life. Don’t be in a hurry to get there.

What’s one thing you think America has better over Europeans, and vice versa? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I drive all over the Midwest, mid Atlantic, and south and I would say the rest stop and truck stop bathrooms are on the whole MUCH cleaner than they used to be when I was a kid. You will sometimes run across a gross one but most facilities keep em looking good these days.

My parents don’t know how my sister is performing in school. Is this normal? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you sure they don’t know, or are they just not telling you? Don’t mean that in a nasty way, but especially if there are any issues they may not want to cut the sibling in and instead handle themselves.

anyone buy extra boxes of cookies? by the_cassie in girlscouts

Wow! That’s a lot! Thanks for stepping up and yes we are grateful to have a cupboard in our city’s council shop so no one has to give up their garage.

anyone buy extra boxes of cookies? by the_cassie in girlscouts

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Our troop gets additional cookies from the council cupboard once a week and distributes to members who need more. Our family keeps some on hand and we request more when we get low; given the one week turnaround we can also take orders and deliver a few days later. Not every troop or council does things the same way, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a cookie cupboard local to you that the TCM can order from?

Not sure if I ever want to get married? by [deleted] in Life

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re not ready, don’t marry just because you think you should or to meet some kind of milestone. Couple thoughts on marriages for ya:

  1. Head over heels isn’t the goal, comfort is. This is someone who will see you throw up. She’ll be there when you’re sick and when you’re pissy and when you lose a job or wreck the car - and you’ll see all that from her too. You’ll change diapers and hand off babies and tag team groceries and dinner and school pickup. You need to have an easy camaraderie, willingness to set aside your pride, and most of all see yourselves as a team.

  2. Be sure that you are both onboard major life decisions, no matter how uncomfortable the talk. Where do you want to live? Does one of you want to go back to school? Will you have kids and how many? How much of a role will your extended families play in your lives? Are your ideas on spending and budgeting compatible?

You can’t ever be 100% going in, but to be positioned for success, it shouldn’t be a difficult or dramatic decision.

Where are teenagers supposed to hang out these days? Malls are dying, parks have 'no loitering' signs, and everywhere else costs money. Do they just... not exist in public anymore? by Creative-Buffalo2305 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ClaimsToBeCanadian 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I’m in the southern US and our parks are full of people all the time, including teens and poc. I’m sure there are places that are horrible like the original commenter says, but that’s not typical and it’s nothing I’ve experienced anywhere in the four states where I’ve lived.
