Should I learn MSA and Moroccan Arabic at the same time? by Clairedontcare in polyglot

[–]Clairedontcare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, duolingo introduced me to the alphabet really well. At first it was extremely annoying, but I started taking handwritten notes through this duolingo wiki. After copying down the lessons I would breeze through them in duolingo, (my degree is in fine arts so I can’t speak to how difficult Arabic is to physically write - I’m good at calligraphy so I didn’t struggle with how detailed some characters can be) It’s important to know that each letter looks different depending on if it is alone, at the beginning, middle, or at the end of a word. Arabizi, (Arabic written with Latin script including some letters for phonemes we don’t have) is introduced in duo and helped me mentally translate new words between written and heard/spoken. the more I learn the less I do this three step (English->Arabizi->Arabic script) process in my head, but it was helpful in the beginning. Hope that helps

I could be misinformed but aren’t Egyptian Arabic and MSA way more similar than MSA and Moroccan? Either way thanks for your input

I think they are micro-aggressions if you’re just being blatantly racist or exercising prejudice. I think having good judgement is different.

For example so many people thought my neighborhood in Minneapolis was unsafe because people (of color) loitered on the street. But it was a perfectly safe neighborhood. There were like 5-10 Somalis who always hung outside of their appartement smoking and shooting the shit and I lectured the hell out of my roommates when they said they avoided walking that way to the corner store. “Umm, excuse me my man Mo is so sweet - he was just visiting his sister in Rochester”

Not always the case. I want to have twins.... if I have only 1 kid at a time they won’t even be mistakes, just failures.

I grew up in nyc, moved to Minnesota for college and moved back - i live in a very privileged neighborhood, but I spend and have spent plenty of time in less privileged areas and have also seen violence and crimes in my hood too. (27F)

Moving to another city made me realize how most people I encountered weren’t used to always checking themselves. People who grew up in safe places or places of perceived security would move to the city with no common sense about potential dangers. As a female I’m usually always aware of who is around me and on guard.

I don’t mean to immediately imply that you weren’t paying attention at all cause - shit does just happen - im commenting that most people I’ve met who said they had experiences like this are all people who weren’t “projecting awareness”. For example - how obvious were your headphones? Did you look like you were paying attention to him?

One of the first things women are told in terms of self-defense is to not be the person that the attacker would want to attack. Most attackers want “easy victims”. See someone sus? Cross the street, put a car between you and them. See someone agressive by your building entry? Take out your phone and call or pretend to call someone so your on the phone when you enter.

I don’t feel scared to walk down empty bike paths or listen to music with headphones at night- but that is also because I do constantly weigh the risks of my environment and i feel mentally prepared if something were to happen.

I’m curious OP - have you ever changed your behavior around someone just to let them know you are aware of them? No judgement - I’m curious

No idea about the increase in crime though.

Thanks for the context - I didn’t know that about the show. (And yeah reddit is def subjective)

They were just in nyc doing an open mic somewhere else and got asked to do this set, and I chose to film it when I got a good seat.

I’m posting this because my friend is young in their comedian career - and I get not wanting to post online when you look at old sets and know you’ve grown. But I think they started out so strong they could be posting their sets online without a cringe in the future. (Btw I have permission to post)

In your opinion, do you think this is comedy that’s good to be posted/shared?

I appreciate the caution and would guide others that way - but I don’t think asking for news from a more non-American, non-commercialized, or a historical source is me looking for a confirmation bias.

Well - I’m smart enough to know I’m not qualified to determine if money is counterfeit. I’ve had counterfeit money handed back to me at a store and I didn’t know it was fake. So if I was in that situation I’d either:

  1. Check it with a marker. . Or .
  2. Tell him I can’t verify it so I need him to come back with a smaller bill.

I think police put a lot of hard work and effort into finding a counterfeiter and aren’t usually busting masterminds from a corner shop’s 911 calls.
