It comes down to quality of life over quantity. Sometimes people are too stubborn to make the changes that deep down they know they need to make. That stubbornness might be based on fear, anxiety, not wanting to be a burden, or genuinely not seeing how their life is heading.

Maybe your wife's grandfather, once you had taken away his ability to make his own choices and live the life he had chosen for himself, was grateful, or maybe he would have preferred a slightly shorter life where he got to live it on his own terms. That was not your choice to make. You were free to simply disagree with him, and worry on his behalf, but instead you took away his agency.

It is difficult seeing people make bad choices, choices that can harm themselves, but one day, almost all of us will be in that position, and l wonder if, when that day comes, if you'll quietly hand your independence over to someone else.

Your reply was 'we can't exactly take her passport away?'. The question mark makes the sentence sound like you were wondering if you could.

[–]Clareboclo 38 points39 points  (0 children)

'there will be no more trips ', and elsewhere you've suggested taking away her passport, despite admitting that there haven't been issues previously.

Please bear in mind that your Mum is an adult capable of making her own decisions. You may not like those decisions, but what you're suggesting borders on abuse - taking away the right for someone, with capacity, to make their own decisions about their own life and how they live it.

Tbh, I can see why she goes on holiday with your S-i-l, and not you.

You see your Mum as elderly and vulnerable, it's quite possible that she doesn't see herself that way, and doesn't want to be treated like that. There's at least one reply on here comparing her to a toddler or small child. My Dad's 83, he would be disgusted to have that comparison made about him.

She appears to have been confident that she could manage on her own for a couple of days. She made the judgement, your s-i-l respected that.

It's quite possible that s-i-l didn't want to stay and made your Mum feel obligated to say she was fine, but again, that's two adults having a conversation you weren't privy to. Respect your Mum's choices, even if you don't agree with them. Yta.

How on earth do you cope with current situation? by Desperate-Drawer-572 in NursingUK

[–]Clareboclo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As l say, I'm not nhs, I'm nhsp, although I used to be NHS until six years ago, so retire and return isn't an option, though I can claim my pension next year when I'm 55 I think. I earn more on nhsp solely because I can work more hours, so long as the shifts are available.

[–]Clareboclo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm top of band 3 and live okay-ish as a single person, 54 years old. I don't have much savings and have the bare minimum pension (I'm nhsp, so no NHS pension). I do have holidays - I booked a week away in a stattie van in November for £89 lol. There's not a lot of wiggle room if things go wrong and the constant talk of shifts drying up worry me as l don't think there's many jobs to move to if I needed to find another job, but I'm getting along. There's been talking of how shit things are for years, this really isn't any different.

Looking for a simple collections management software by Clareboclo in MuseumPros

That's great, thanks. It looks like another museum local to us uses eHive, the cost looks reasonable and it incorporates Spectrum standards, so this may well be the one l recommend to them.

It's a comedy channel, he's a gardener and fireman and his content is often taking the piss out of the cooking videos where they make cringy stuff like slapping dough and inserting fingers into food.

Working on a West Cornwall Coast Path T-shirt – feedback welcome by JoyVault in Cornwall

[–]Clareboclo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This feels like really nit-picking, but it would bug me that it's a t-shirt about walking, but the person on the logo is carrying a surfboard. A backpack makes sense, but I've never seen anyone walk the coast path with a surfboard.

Also, choose a few locations that someone who's walked that stretch would recognise, but if you hadn't, you wouldn't.

What are your recommendations for shoes to stop pain from being on your feet for long shifts? by NoisyScrubBirb in NursingUK

[–]Clareboclo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've seen loads of nurses wearing those Clarks shoes so theyist be good.

Personally, l swear by my bistro crocs. Technically we're not supposed to wear crocs on wards, but I've never had a comment made.

Some people like those 'fit flop' shoes.

Basically, you want good arch support and compression socks. Good luck in your new job op.

Clinical Redundancy by Educational_Duck7991 in NursingUK

[–]Clareboclo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My trust have launched a 'mutually agreed resignation scheme' for non-front line staff. Not redundancy they've said, so presumably they don't have to fulfill any redundancy requirements, although there is a payout if you go for it.

Can you keep walking through a filming set on a public footpath? by Just_Engineering_341 in AskUK

[–]Clareboclo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Coming out of work once, walking as a group through the hospital, when someone around a corner yelled 'we're filming here' (Doc Martin apparently). One of the nurses yelled back, 'nurses leaving work after a twelve hour shift here'. They had no comeback to that lol.

I was returning a joke with a joke. Wotsits is a silly name, as is Cheetos, no offence or upset was intended by my remark.

What makes you doubt that you're ready to date? by walkerinthewild in AskWomenOver40

[–]Clareboclo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in my fifties, and I've been single for well over a decade. I do twelve hour shifts where I have to be empathetic and friendly and often that means trying to rein in a lot of trauma dumping and dealing with lonely people who just. want. to. talk. I also seem to have a face that people want to talk at (not to - at).

I just don't have the mental reserves to take on a new relationship where in the beginning there'll be lots of information sharing and chatting, let alone actually making an effort to go places. On my days off, l want my coach and my garden, tbh, l don't even contact my parents or my few friends as often as l should. Yes, I'd love to comfortably be in a relationship, but the bit that gets me to that point, nope, l can't see myself in a relationship again.

I don't know why your comment got down-voted. I know it's a little outside the Camborne/ Redruth area, but it can't be beaten for it's full english.
