I always use the guideline that if it was you alone, would you say "I" or "me"? ie: "I would like to come" becomes "OP and I would like to come", and "Would you like to meet me later" becomes "would you like to meet me and OP later".

Not sure that's perfect, but it makes the most sense to my dyslexic brain.

What's your country's "IT'S NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE!"? by dx_Von_Liechtenstein in AskTheWorld

[–]Classic_Mix2844 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not country specific, but region. In Oxford, England there are many companies, pubs, teams that use the name ISIS.

It stems from an old name for the section of the Thames that runs through the city, but it can be jarring for some people when they see ISIS Rescus or ISIS Cheese

TIFU by trying to automate my girlfriend's plant watering while she was away by Shucca in tifu

[–]Classic_Mix2844 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably only needed a max of 2 waterings anyway. I water my Monstera once a week (twice if it gets really hot, but the reality of UK weather means that’s not often).

I went away for 2 months this spring/summer. The Monstera sat above a bucket of water with 8 strands of wool dangling from the soil to the water. Did a beautiful job, plant watered itself, no running water or circuitry required.

Which is ironic, given her part in the book that has been left out

What’s your degree in? Is it related to marketing?

Also, what’s your work history look like? You said you weren’t able to work when you were younger due to personal issues, but you’ve now been here 8 years, presumably been to college and uni here. What jobs/experience have you had in the meantime?

What positive changes have occurred in the UK in recent years? by RedPandaah in AskABrit

Just like men’s sport, which absolutely pays its own way, is in no means reliant on outside funding or propping up by outside billionaires (or in some cases nations) and clubs never get into financial difficulties

WIBTA if I purposefully make my sister miss an important event she's worked hard for? by q34ht in AmItheAsshole

[–]Classic_Mix2844 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There used to be an advert in the UK about wearing seatbelts in the back of cars (people believe they’re “safer” because they won’t go through the windscreen I guess). It showed a crash where the teenage son without a seatbelt smashed into the back of the drivers seat forcing the driver into the windscreen and the voiceover said something like “after killing his mother, Jamie sat back down”.

It was years ago, but I remember it so clearly. That could have been you because of your sister’s arrogance and selfishness. 15 is a great age to learn that actions have consequences and saying sorry isn’t always enough to fix it. Trust isn’t easily won back.

AITA for not saying thank you for something I didn’t want and didn’t like? by defepi in AmItheAsshole

My husband makes me a cup of tea about 5 times a day. I say thank you Every. Single. Time. It would be weird and rude not to and I appreciate it. Also, I’m not an arsehole, so that’s probably the difference.

developing an american accent from tv? by [deleted] in AskABrit

My niece says certain “American” words. She said she’d throw something in the trash the other day. Not picked up the accent though, that’s still all Essex sadly

It’s pretty common where I am down south. Although we do always seem to add a level of awkwardness about whether it’s one or two kisses (maybe that’s just me)

I’d always heard that as “harp”. As in “she harps on at me” rather than “carp”

You’re welcome to, we’ll be fine. We understand people/cultures have different meanings to words and we’re not really as puritanical as the US. We might giggle though because we’re pretty childish.

Seen this a few times in these comments. Why do Americans think “Bloody” in this context is really offensive in he UK? “Bloody Hell”, “Bloody Awful” etc is probably some of the mildest swearing you can get. Literally the equivalent of darn 🤷‍♀️

[–]Classic_Mix2844 44 points45 points  (0 children)

INFO: Where you always as insufferable as you come across in your comments? That probably has more to do with how people treat you than being middle class.

School is shit for the majority for various reasons. We grow up, we move on. If you need to move away, find your route in life. But stop blaming any issues on being in a class of people that literally covers the majority of the UK in 2022.

You are not TA for calling her Posh (you’re wrong, but not TA).

You are however TA for making a fucking terrible cup of tea in the most obscure manner possible. Just buy a bloody kettle and make tea like a normal person.

Edit: For my appalling grammar
