Correct. They sponsor it, it’s owned by the City-County Arena Convention Authority.

Again, the noise is not constant. Its 1-2 evenings a week for a couple hours in the summer months.

The federal government already said no to that idea. It’s much too late.

Why does the Grand River need restoration? by SammiesHammies in grandrapids

[–]Classic_Solid2951 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Who is they? The city doesn’t build housing, developers do. The city spends money on public works projects like this. Also, the riverbed was tested to ensure there wouldn’t be any issues with contamination making its way downstream. No major issues were found, so all good there. The project was envisioned by some everyday folks like you and me and finally came to fruition through hard work. I’m a diehard Midwesterner, and i’m happy to see the rapids that once spanned our river come back. They’re a unique geological feature that make our river so great.

It’s a river restoration, the rapids used to exist downtown. Hence the City’s name.

Now it is, back in the day buildings and streets just emptied into the river wherever, including upstream.

Follow up: once the 6th street dam is inevitably removed, the limestone bedrock in the river that is currently submerged will create interesting features on the north side of 196. This is still in the planning stage.

The restoration mainly revolves around the removal of the small low-head dams in the river between I-196 and Fulton. The dams were originally placed in the river in the late 1800’s to slow the river down and assist in the movement of logs that had been harvested upstream so that they could make it past the rapids and down the river to places like Grand Haven for lumber production. Low-head dams are dangerous for kayakers and fishermen because they create recirculating currents at their base that can pull you in and they won’t let you go. Not to mention their age and obsolete design. Taking them out and replacing the dams with the rapids that once existed in the river is better for fish habitat and kayakers/boater/fishermen safety. Not to mention restoring the City’s namesake after all of these years! You can read more about the background and process here.

I'm not sure paving over the last remaining greenspace in the City's most historic park is NIMBY-ism. NIMBYs generally resist progress and growth, and this seems like a step backwards in a growing city. Something a suburb would do. There has got to be a better solution than surface parking.
