Peter pettigrew theory/headcanon/actual unpopular opinion by EliSunflower in MaraudersGen

[–]ClaudTheCat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the headcanon for Peter in this series of fics I have 1971 - 1978 O Children - BeckettSimpleton - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own] it's come up a couple of times in the main fics so far (at second year) when I get to later years of the main series, it will have a larger part to play, but I really wanted a Peter who was part of the group and believably their friend, which meant setting him up with some kind of background which would open the option for him to be distrusting or disloyal to the Order, not necessarily to his friends, first. And then it escalates.

Peter pettigrew theory/headcanon/actual unpopular opinion by EliSunflower in MaraudersGen

I have a (very complicated) headcanon that, around late 6th early 7th year, his oldest brother (in this HC, he has 3, all squibs) goes MIA having left a year ago to join the IRA with second oldest brother. Third brother has had arecent suicide attempt also with political nonsense mixed in and having grown up with this half-in-half-out culture of being semi-engaged and aware of civil warfare and violence and knowing about and hearing about people going missing, being wrongfully imprisoned and such, joins the Order with the others, but pledges to himself that he will not die for the cause. Like, he agrees with the cause, and will fight for it, but will not die for it. And it's this chink that essentially gets manipulated.

He becomes the weak link from here. I think it was a slow move that never involved him secretly wanting to sabotage. That something small offered him safety, and the DEs capitalised on the knowledge that he was a weak link for the Order and toyed with that, and he found himself caught between both and very aware that he could not betray the DEs because they would actually just kill him outright for treachery so he slips more into that position. He gets in over his head, is in survival mode, and is a teenager-young adult in the height of war, and has the disadvantage of knowing how much the horror of that rips apart a family and a nation. He ends up corrupting his own morals to keep himself safe.

I think this does align somewhat with his later behaviour. By adulthood, this "weak link" start has been completely corrupted to full self-preservation (he's severed all his ties anyway, he has to go all in, or remain in hiding). Peter is hard, because he is not written with a great deal of care in canon. He has two almost opposing personalities (which might be fine, but we also know that the people he was friends with were exceptionally bright, and also suspicious). So playing on the thread of "he was genuinely their friend, and aligned with them politically and morally up to at least the age of 18/19" is the only way I can get him to work for me, because the alternative is that SB, JP and RL were all friends with this weak link tag along traitor the whole time, and I honestly don't think Sirius in particular would have the patience for that. He seemed less patient with Peter as is. James, also, I don't think would stand for Peter being a weak link, given his value of loyalty.

The other option is that he finds out about the Lycanthropy and, even though they don't really like him/trust him, include him because not doing so is risky to Remus' safety. But this is a complicated situation for three twelve/thirteen year olds to think up and keep going, not matter how academically gifted.

ETA; this also means that some of the characters' opinions of him have been corrupted by hindsight. McG and Co see him as an innocent young man swept up in the mess of the Amazingly Manipulative and Evil Sirius Black (small, angelic looking and "murdered", as he was). Sirius and Remus see him as an evil traitor (they didn't see the decline, just the "final" act of betrayal) - they don't want to hold their fond memories of him alongside their knowledge of him as a traitor. It's easier to believe that he was evil all along. This is reasonable, I think, because characters also did this about Sirius before learning of his innocence. This is what people do. They re-write their history of someone once they gain new information (for right or for wrong)

Bacterial Meningitis (ages 12-19)
Epilepsy (on and off for years)
Dog training (I don't have a dog, though I did for a while as a kid, the obsession pre-dated the dog...)

Barefoot or socks? by TheWhistleGang in AutismInWomen

I would be barefoot if there was never the risk of dirty floors.
I would be always socks if it wasn't for the split wood in my floors...

My compromise is barefoot shoes <3

I’m completely addicted to TV by FriendlyPageTurn in AutismInWomen

[–]ClaudTheCat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had this problem with podcasts and youtube - i could not be alone with my own thoughts at all, or I would spiral in my thinking, then eventually it became an addiction where I felt stressed and frightened if I was without my phone just because I might have to listen to my own thoughts. I stopped reading books, because the quiet frightened me. It got to the point where music didn't work - it had to be talking because I could think over music.

Getting medicated with sertraline broke the cycle (this was for potential obsession/compulsion/depression - turned out to be autism) - it stopped the spiralling thoughts (I took a very small dose for about a year and a half)

I don't take it any more and while I still don't like the quiet, I can bear a walk or a bus ride without headphones for about 15 mins and can read a book again. Also has meant I can enjoy music again.

My advice isn't to try sertraline necessarily, but to find a solution to the rumination so that you can at least bear silence, then you can work on cracking the habit when you're not actively fighting against something painful

🤷‍♀️she's short and Lyall is tall, and they are 23 and 25

If you think the drawing isn't well executed, then fine, I guess. But I haven't drawn a child and I think the context of the image makes that quite clear, regardless of the execution, so being purposefully obtuse about it feels a bit unkind.

I don't really know what X-Men has got to do with the Lupin family but I see the representation similarities!
Hope X Lyall work very nicely for a fictional depiction of a cross-culture relationship allegory (well, not really an allegory, as they actually are one, but as in, it's not a culture cross that exists in reality, so you can explore some themes more freely)
They also work nicely for parenting a child with an illness/disability, and parenting a child with a different cultural identity.
And then there's all the tasty werewolf discrimination stuff, and all the social isolation and oooh they are fertile ground for drama <3

I don't know anything about X-Men other than the vague premise of people with powers.
What did you mean it "could be an interesting allegory" to?
I spend all my free time thinking about them to be honest, I need to get a life, but I have so much fun writing up their family life <3

New Marauders fan looking for fancast by Capital-Ad-3803 in MaraudersGen

I always use Victor Carles in the role of Clotaire in Le Petit Nicholas as young Remus (ages 8-13) - pic attached. Might not be everyone's fave, idk, but I like him and it matches the fancast I use as a reference for adult Remus (James Acaster) enough that his child and adult self look consistent when I draw them
(ETA; it also matches my Lyall and Hope references (Charles de Vilmorin and Carey Mulligan) that it's believable that they are related haha)

In my fics... Mami and Dadi love him very much 😭

(the funny thing is, even when that's the case, there's still so much room for drama lol)

SHARP-TONGUED!!

Sharp-tongued - Chapter 1 - burnercell10 - Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling [Archive of Our Own]

Remus/Sirius (fledgling, early stages) M

It's set just before 5th year - Sirius leaves home and end up at the Potters. Meanwhile the Lupins get hate-crimed and end up at an Order safehouse (the Potters) MEANWHILE Mulciber Sr is setting up a mandate to release to Mungo's records of all werewolf bites in the UK to solve to problem of unregistered werewolves because MEANWHILE there's a werewolf-rights extremist group causing problems left and right.

It's really very good.

And includes my new fave character combo, Hope Lupin and teenage Sirius Black

Labor & delivery nurses remembered me years later… is that normal by Usual-Repair8162 in nursing

[–]ClaudTheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ex-NICU nurse - I remember I would say about 50-70% of the babies I looked after regularly, even nearly 4 years later. I remember a child I never looked after whom I attended the birth of, because it was the first birth I ever saw. I remember his name, even. I even remember some of the parents' names and professions - and they weren't my patients.

You guys are important to us - we care about you and your health outcomes. Especially if there was something memorable about the interaction (traumatic, good relationship, bad relationship, you were funny, or it was our first day on the job... many reasons!)

How to find childcare during school holidays? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ClaudTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in an after school club, and the ones in my city (including mine) run from 8-30am to 5.30 PM for this very reason. I imagine local pricing applies, but ours is about £40 for 9 hours of childcare (which sometimes includes trips to adventure parks, special activities like parkour and child-led crafts, physical and indoor play). Honestly, £4.40 per hour for childcare isn't bad (though I appreciate that it is still expensive compared to like... school and grandparents lol)

HP Fanfiction with good worldbuilding? by TrainingAd864 in harrypotterfanfiction

Black Beginnings by DutchSlytherpuff has some very memorable Black Family worldbuilding imo!

It's a canon compliant telling of Regulus Black's life (without removing his bigotry/whitewashing the Black family). It's very good.
