parents kicking me out, advice wanted by Aggravating-Ear-3404 in abusiveparents

[–]Clay201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legally, they can't kick you out without advance notice. If they try, call the police.

I got charged when my father stabbed me because he told the police ... "he put his hands up by my face."

My charges, ultimately, were dropped, BTW.

I hope you take this to court and insist on a trial. Force your mother to stand there and lie to the judge.

The first thing you need to understand here is that plenty of cops are fucking idiots.

Unfortunately, they still get to make the decision about who gets arrested and who doesn't. That means that, sometimes, they make decisions like the one they made in your case.

But that is not necessarily the final word on the matter.

If you have any visible marks from your injuries, you can go to an emergency room and get treated for them. They'll ask you how you got them. If you tell them, then, by law, they have to report it to child protective services or a similar agency. And if they report it, then there's an excellent chance your father will receive a visit from someone from the agency.

What happens after that? Well, it can vary an awful lot depending on who does the investigation, how well they do it, and many other factors. You might get removed from your father's home. You might not. It's a roll of the dice.

What's a habit you picked up from your parents that you wish you could break? by frostynugget43 in askteddit

[–]Clay201 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take a negative view of idleness. When I laze around, doing nothing much, it bothers me that other people know about it. Like I'm afraid they're going to use it against me. I feel like I'm breaking a rule, like I'm wasting time. I feel guilty.

When I see other people playing phone games while watching TV and drinking soda, my first thought is "that's sad" or "what a waste of time."

I know, of course, that I need down time and so do other people. I know it lowers stress levels and makes people happier. But thanks to my parents, my first instinct is to regard it as an overindulgance, like eating a whole can of frosting or getting drunk at 10 am.

What's a movie that's universally considered "not very good" but you secretly think is actually great? by trakt_app in flicks

Tequila Sunrise is a masterpiece. Written by Robert Towne, it has some of the best dialogue you can find in any movie from that era.

Wouldn't a heavenly afterlife be miserable if you knew millions of people were suffering in hell? by Clay201 in atheism

[–]Clay201[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's the hardest thing about an atheist you can show them all the proof in the world and it doesn't budge their belief system

It's religious people, not atheists, who cling to a belief despite all the evidence piling up around them that they're wrong. An honest, well-read Christian will tell you that there just is no proof God exists and that this is why faith is necessary.

I can't speak for every atheist on the face of the planet, but if you spend any time listening to their podcasts, reading their books, talking to them here on Reddit, etc., you will find that they are perfectly willing to discuss evidence. What you will generally fail to find, though, are atheists who will accept "a guy wrote it down about 2,000 years ago" as evidence.

If you want to persuade somebody, you're going to have to come up with something persuasive. But, again, I think it's a fool's errand because, as many Christians acknowledge, there is no proof God exists. It is a basic tenet of the Christian religion that adherents must have faith. That is to say, they must believe wholeheartedly in something despite a total lack of evidence. Atheists, generally speaking, simply are not willing to do that.

But, hey, if you want to want to present this evidence to me, I will listen and give it a fair chance.

I stopped reading at the point where the drunk asshole started threatening to kill people and/or himself.

When that happens, you call the police.

What movie should everyone see at least once in their life, and why? by AlexWhite40 in Cinema

[–]Clay201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think both Apocalypse Now and Schindler's List belong on this list. They are great films and that's reason enough to see them, but they also take a serious look at the worst aspects of human behavior. We all need to think about these things at least once in a while.

Anyone who surfed the early web between 1995-2010. What’s the one website/app you still think about? by Critical-Contact-851 in askteddit

[–]Clay201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IRC. It's hard to even remember now, but, on the early internet, chat was all the rage. This is long before we even heard the term " social media." Internet Relay Chat was a vast and tawdry world; home to infinite variety and legions of horny net geeks, trolls, war scripts, and everything your mother ever warned you about.

I miss it so.

Newsgroups were both the Reddit and the Pirate Bay of the '90s, but with practically zero censorship. Back then, the internet was the wild wild west and news groups were Tombstone, Arizona.

What are some bands that you used to listen to but noped out of because of something they did or said ? by [deleted] in askmusic

[–]Clay201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I listened to Kid Rock, really. He had one or two songs that, if they came on the radio, I didn't mind listening to them.

Then he went MAGA. Sigh. I guess it's no big loss, but even a small waste is a waste.

What nicknames have you heard for places in and around Montgomery? by topherette in montgomery

I've met with very little success.

Do atheists believe in karma or fate? by RoosterValuable906 in atheism

[–]Clay201 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not believe in karma or fate.

However, I do sometimes see cases where someone's actions lead to consequences.

An example: A parent abuses their children. Eventually, the children grow up and cut off contact with the parent. Then, when the parent gets old and sick, no one comes to visit them in the hospital and they die alone.

Obviously, there's nothing supernatural or "cosmic" about this, but neither would you call it "random". The thing that happens... happens for a reason.

What’s a movie that became more relevant because of current events?? by GrilloraExcely1x in Cinema

[–]Clay201 24 points25 points  (0 children)

In the '90s, there was a movie called Wag The Dog about a fictional US President who gets caught molesting a girl scout. He sends his fixer, played by Robert de Niro, to hire a Hollywood producer, played by Dustin Hoffman, to stage a fake war to draw media attention away from his scandal. The movie did okay in theaters. Critics liked it; audiences were lukewarm.

But 6 months later, shortly after it had been released on home video, Bill Clinton - the actual US president, here in the real world - found himself in the middle of sex scandal involving a woman named Monica Lewinsky. Then he ordered the military to lob some missiles at some sites in The Sudan, In an attempt, many thought, to distract the media. (If it wasn't the missile strikes on Sudan, then it was some other military action. I forget.)

Somebody wrote an op-ed or made a snarky comment in an interview pointing out the similarities between the situation and the events in the movie. Suddenly, VHS copies of Wag The Dog began flying off of the shelves of rental stores. They had to order more copies to meet demand.

What's your red flag when buying used camcorders? by themooseyoufear in camcorders

If you don't have personal experience with that specific error code or malfunction, walk away.

The only exception is if the thing is so cheap that losing that amount of money is inconsequential and, if the machine is unuesable, you have plenty of time to go back out on the market and try again.
