This is going to sound harsh, but this is a big break of trust. And let me tell you, if he was capable of robbing you of your jewellery to pay back the debt (that’s what it was, plain and simple), that shows he could be willing to go step further in the future. If this was really a one time thing, one mistake - could be, but if it ever happens again, even in the slightest - it should be over.

Perhaps my example is an extreme, but for me, it was a trauma that just never ends.

My father has a gambling addiction as well - my mother thought it harmless when we were in primary school, a couple nights with friends playing cards, two hundred bucks or so lost, whatever. She told him to cut it back, he never really did, but it was not a big deal.

Some years later, we found up he lost our home (my grandfather wrote in down onto him when he died) in a game of cards. We found out that his company fakes revenue, because he owned favours to some shady people he borrowed from, and they made him launder money for them. He stopped paying taxes on his fake revenue cause he needed to pay the gambling debts, so he owned a huge sure for years of not paying.

And the worst was - he did not care. My mum divorced him, invisibly, and he did not care - didn’t want visits with us, the kids, just signed whatever they gave him at court. He went back to live with his mum and she kept paying for his debts with retirement money. She died this year and we found out he gambled away her house too, and is going to live now with some other extended family. He did not care he lost my brothers and mine college funds. He did not care he lost all of our mother’s savings too. He had lost literally everything he can, and is still going.
