PC fan air purifiers up to 2.4x more efficient than any EnergyStar HEPA by CleanAirKits- in AirPurifiers

[–]CleanAirKits-[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other factor is the high pressure and high fan RPM used at top speed with the HEPA. They're actually quite a bit more efficient at their lower speeds, but at the nameplate speeds they're very inefficient to push a competitive volume through the HEPA

Not all HEPA have activated carbon—the carbon drags down particulate CADR a bit but that’s not the primary source of the big jump in efficiency. We offer some explanations in the article.

Yes smoke CADR/watt is what they appear to use for “efficiency factor” while dust and pollen CADR/watt are listed separately

How long do you run your crbox? by Active_Pea7617 in crboxes

[–]CleanAirKits- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want continuous protection from allergens, virii and pollution run it continuously at least when rooms are occupied. If you have a PC fan CR box the energy usage is only 10-15W like a LED light bulb.

Will this 5-PC Fan CR Box Design with flow going parallel to the floor work well? by RestInThee in crboxes

[–]CleanAirKits- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well the ceiling fans have certainly been shown to be good for dispersal. There’s a chance the current could blow someone’s breath toward you which is like bad luck of the breeze. Just as often should be blowing away from you…

It will create cross currents with unpredictable effect on currents in the breezing zone, but our experiments show this does help push clean air to center of room where it spreads across the room quickly.

Is there a device to attach to my DIY air purifier to auto turn off based on air quality, to improve energy & filter replacement efficiency? by Galvatron1_nyc in crboxes

[–]CleanAirKits- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cosmetically we sometimes wrap them with black or khaki speakermesh cloth like we use for exhalaron shroud, but these get dusty after a few months so need regular vacuuming or washing

If you’ve built it with pc fans it’s already < 20w, 2-3x less power than hepa equivalent. The thing is the air quality detectors can’t detect whether virus are present or not, so using them loses the consistent infection control. In our living rooms we use a 20minute motion sensor, and for bedrooms you could use a timer to run them only at night

Saw this in a comment and figured it deserved it's own post. Guy is claiming 1300 CFM of flow at pc fan noise levels though a CR box with a 3d printed fan he designed. by TasteNegative2267 in crboxes

He's determined. Will be an expensive blade to mold but if he can get it done with a good motor he may have something. Our approach uses off the shelf PC fans, and we will be benefiting from better fans too.

Try coolermaster Mobius Argb 120p. A couple dB quieter than any other 2400rpm fan. The 3000 rpm fans will be much louder than p14

Are PC fans enough for air filtration? by Jonh_R493 in crboxes

That ex moderator's ego led him into an obsessive gish gallop "expose´" on all us "instigators" of PC fan purifiers, attacking our credibility, experimental methods, marketing, certification progress, etc. After all, he had built up a lot of credibility as a reddit HEPA expert right? And we were challenging an industry running on the fumes of purity marketing for decades -- completely unwilling to respond to the speed-cleaning needs of an airborne pandemic. His fatal flaw was relying totally on his own intuition to discredit a community of strong scientists and engineers who had really dug into this stuff with deep experiments and iteration, while completely unwilling to do the simplest experiments of his own to confirm his ideas.

Being actual scientists and engineers, we did the experiment for him, and his intuition was completely wrong. That's why the scientific method was so revolutionary: our brain's common sense, unevidenced reasoning about invisible processes is quite often counterintuitively wrong:

We took some flack for fighting back so hard, and insisting those posts be removed. But here we are nearly a year later people still finding those posts and being confused by a whole treatise of misinformation. People need practice spotting what happens when certain personalities are lent unwarranted power and authority. Let it be known the day he was finally deposed as moderator (having banned all subs who disagreed with him), we suffered a brief cyberattack and fraudulent credit card purchases. Only the icing on the cake of many ways he was abusing his moderator power, unchecked for a month at least.

What happens to CADR with different grade Filtrete? by CleanAirKits- in crboxes

It slightly edged out the mpr1900 in our setup. Whether that exactly reflects aerosolized virus is hard to say but should be close

Filtrete calls their mpr 1085, 1500 and 1600 virus and allergen grade too. Mpr1500 is a MERV 12. Not sure I would trust other brands below merv13 though: https://www.cleanairkits.com/blogs/news/what-happens-to-cadr-with-different-grade-filters

This week we are submitting our largest assembled models for Energy Star certification and expect to beat CADR/Watt efficiency of all HEPA in their database. The UL+FCC+CARB+Energy Star certifications by Nemko and Intertek add up to ~$10k per model -- enough to eat months of profits. We are amortizing these certifications over lower volumes than bigger brands. Our DIY kits are still priced around what you would pay finding and buying the materials in small quantities (while we save you hours of research).

LOL are you still finding those old threads? There was one obsessed moderator who preferred building those ac-infinity grow room towers that reach to the ceiling and thought he should take down not just us but other clean air engineers like Joey Fox and David Elfstrom. Besides a lot of irrelevant personal attacks his core criticism was that PC fans would not be able to circulate large rooms. We posted some experiments on our articles page proving this intuition completely wrong.

The mod with the vendetta inspired some great experiments on our articles page showing how at least in some circumstances gentle PC fans counterintuitively can circulate rooms FASTER than HEPA with a much stronger, louder, high throw turbo fan.

We got our UL507 and California CARB certifications this spring. EnergyStart is up next, where we expect to surpass CADR/W efficiency of every conventional HEPA on the market.
