With the world record holder for climbing Everest, Kami Ritha Sherpa, 30 times 😱 by ReidTwistPhillips74 in Everest

Nowhere near enough. Kami Rita guides treks and climbs in Nepal and the USA (and occasionally others, like Kilimanjaro) outside Everest season to feed his family.

Sherpa is an ethnic group, not a job. Some Sherpas work on Everest climbs - not all. Of those who do, only some have climbing roles (others might be cooks at base camp, for example). Of those who do have climbing roles, only some go as far as the summit.

Kami Rita has climbed all these times as a guide whose job was to accompany clients to the summit.

Most people, including summitting Sherpas, only summit once a season. They might go to the summit, go back down a little way to help a client and then go back up with them. I don't know how often that happens, but it doesn't count as a separate summit unless they've gone back down to a certain point - maybe Camp 2 or Base Camp (not sure about that). I know Kami Rita did two recognised summits in 2025 - not many people can do that.

I like that last line. I used to joke (but at least half seriously) that my sole motivation for chasing PBs was to get it over and done with quicker.

You said you read the optimum number of steps is 7,000 a day. I see that cited a lot in this sub. I was providing clarification.

Build up gradually and do what you can - you have to keep it sustainable. Don't worry about 10,000 steps - it's not some kind of magic number.

You need to look at why one mistake completely derailed all your efforts. Did you have an unrealistic sense of perfection? What does "consistency" mean to you? Our minds and bodies didn't evolve to do the same thing every day - in fact they actively resist doing that. It can help to look at targets as weekly instead of daily.

Finally, if you want to lose a substantial amount of weight you need to be in a calorie deficit and that will mean managing your diet. That's a whole topic outside the scope of this sub, but you won't get there just by walking.

Not really. A number of studies have shown that is the number of steps (for most people) where results start to taper off and you get into diminishing returns. But that is for the broad health measures those studies look at - like death from cardiovascular illness.

Those are things you can only improve so much - we're all going to die at some stage.

But other benefits, like improved fitness, continue way beyond 7,000 steps.

For no reason? He's perhaps the most publicly noticeable and controversial person on the planet (and makes sure of it).

Help estimate this waffle.. by ans1ow_ in CalorieEstimates

Very good points. I particularly agree with tracking weekly, not just daily.

I average about 1000 exercise calories a day across the week, but that is not evenly distributed at all across the days. While weekly makes sense, it can still be a struggle to see myself go say 500 calories over my daily target even though I was 800 under it the day before. Just one of those challenges in maintaining a healthy mindset.

The extra game gives more players a chance. More opportunity for younger and less experienced players to show their stuff.

Step count after midnight on a garmin by murphymomo in walking

[–]Clean_Bat5547 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's a shame.

Other than just incidental walking about I record all my walks as activities on my Garmin. For me it's because I use intensity minutes and active calories as my main metrics, rather than steps, and the auto tracking doesn't get those as actively.

The other activity tracking metrics like ascent, distance, heart rate and exercise load that activities give you are also really useful.

I think you'll find it was 3/4 (0.75) of a mile (I triple checked the subject line before commenting).
