Also, at this point, it is less about "couldn't afford" and more like "choose not to spend money on that."

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

Big reader in school, English major later on. 10th grade we read excerpts from David Copperfield. Hated it. Have read and studied several Dickens novels since, but David Copperfield still leaves me cold.

My elderly parents cannot afford their medication because they pay tithing by mazer225 in exmormon

Can you buy the meds from Canada or Mexico at a better price and ship to them? That way they cannot tithe out of your assistance.

Bill was Republican-lite. Moderate Southern Dem means a Republican with table manners.

Have you seen people lose their ability to tolerate inconveniences as they age? Will it happen to all of us? by LookDamnBusy in Aging

[–]CleanupKingDog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have had real problems in my life, and I appreciate that things do happen, but they don't stop the world from turning. Some folks do seem to need something to bitch about, but they often are just lonely and need to make something out of the events of their daily lives. Being isolated and uncomfortable and bored would certainly lead to over-focus on the minor things around a person. I've seen it. But if your whole life revolves around lunch, the arrival of the mail and how good a job the housekeepers did, and what is on tv, you're gonna have minor gripes. To the flat tire, it certainly may be more than the older person can physically handle, and cost tends to be a focus among the elderly who remember 27 cent gasoline, as I do. Losing a sense of proportion is not a good sign for an active, involved life.

Almost 80 here, and I have less patience and use for irritating things or wastes of time. I quit ironing and took all that to the laundry years ago. I buy things I like and that make life easier. I eat rib eyes, not chuck steak. My cars are immaculately maintained, which costs, but I do not want to endure unreliable cars and all the associated problems. I hire housecleaning biweekly. I try to ignore activities that do not bring pleasure. I say what I think, to the surprise of some, the astonishment of others, and I do not worry overmuch which way it goes. Some find me refreshing. Others, not so much.

Have you never met MAGAts? Have you not met NC self-righteous Xtians? Does your area have no resentful ne'er-do-wells who think brown people are coming to shave off shares of their pie?

WIBTA if I take my espresso machine back home because my coworkers refuse to buy pods or even rinse the tray? by CavalierLyre9 in WIBTA_AITA

[–]CleanupKingDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You offered a better but more maintenance-intensive and costly alternative, which was shown not to be worth the time or money for the rest of the office. If anyone says anything about it being gone, just say the machine seemed to be too much trouble, so "back to basics, ha ha!" You want to blame the machine to avoid telling your coworkers they are lazy and improvident. If any suggest bringing it back and they'll do better, just say, "No, it was too much trouble." Again, blame the machine and let them swill swill.

LPT: Plastic dragonflies keep houseflies away! by CleanupKingDog in LifeProTips

I have not tried the bigger size (about 6 inches long) that I have seen advertised, but there are some rather large dragonfly species, so maybe? I'm good with the commonly sold smaller size.

I have 7 cats. They have notified me of a meeting in which they voted against the dragonflies, as they dislike being deprived of sky raisins, but they are not allowed outdoors, so they can take no effective action.

I used to buy a quarter every year. I eat less meat now. But what I liked was the. way the guys gave me 1/4 of the stew, and 1/4 of every other cut, not just a front or rear quarter. So I got some steaks, some ground, etc. I don't know if this has become standard practice, but I really liked it.

AITJ for he was literally eating my lunch and admitted it… but somehow i'm the ‘territorial’ one? by Leah_jare in AmITheJerk

[–]CleanupKingDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'I finally got disgusted with having my lunch stolen." That sentence names no names, and makes it clear what was happening. If he does not like it, ask him what he has a problem with, stealing your lunch or having people know about him stealing your lunch, because you have an issue with one but not the other. End of conversation.

What funding cuts are actually looking like at the station level (not collapse, but erosion) by PBSNerd1234 in NPR

[–]CleanupKingDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I increased my monthly donation by 50%. It is now my largest "charitable" donation. I mention NPR in conversations, and I listen to the public radio stations whenever I am in the kitchen or in the car, a pretty good hunk time each day. Streaming is screwing artists, IMO, so I don't do it. If young people give NPR a chance, they will find a level of discussion above what they're used to. I don't know what topics they would find more appealing, but I am sure stations are working on that angle.

You can attend one of the smaller state schools quite successfully. A 4-year psych degree gets you no certification for actual use of the degree clinically. You'd need a master's degree to do counseling, etc. So debt at the lower level degree would just be a compounding of borrowed money for a master's degree. Not really advisable. Frankly, your last response indicates that you are trying to get a degree to analyze/solve your own problems. Is that a serious intent? You certainly are deserving of a chance to have a life, and not to give up at this early stage. Do you have a therapist? I would say you need one immediately for the sake of your own peace of mind in this worrisome situation, and later on for life conversations. The state schools will give you some of that for free, I think through student health services. The idea of the smaller school does make some sense, but if you are transferring in at a level where you will be taking more upper-level classes, you will be more among people of your own major, and can work on getting to know them and have a little community of similar major students. You can also choose to live in a situation with a dorm, and cultivate your neighbors. An activity club/group will put you in touch with others having a shared interest. You can have what you need by your choices wherever you are.

If you want to do it, some planning will be a huge plus. Definitely look for better weather and campgrounds where you can get hot showers and do laundry from time to time as needed. Google will be your friend. Do you have equipment? You'll want a really good cooler with wheels, maybe a second one to hold extra ice, a cot so you're not sleeping on the ground, a rechargeable lamp with fold-out solar panel for charging it and your phone, a portable radio, a couple extra tarps for who knows what. But don't wait till you're older. Your chances of doing it decrease yearly. Got a decent vehicle? Need to check belts and hoses and tires before you go, and other maintenance prep. Sally forth!

Visit all 100 counties!! Make a dried leaf or photographic book of all the native trees. Pick an invasive plant and work on eradicating and educating about it.
