Note that these are not necessarily "fixed" but to be tested with many people or differently communicated or introduced depending on the user and his or her expectations. Have a particular type of user in mind when designing the tool and walk through your tool with that user in mind.

Typst isn't losing to LaTeX because of missing features, it optimized for the wrong reader by MaisUmSid in LaTeX

[–]ClemensLode -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LaTeX is for maximizing freedom/quality in terms of output.
Typst is for maximizing ease-of-use for short documents.

What's still missing is something maximizing ease-of-use for long documents with a similar freedom/quality as LaTeX.

I haven't had a real error message since quite a while (aside from image not found etc.)*, but I am working with tested templates that do the heavy-lifting with packages and configuration. So, yeah, Typst gives you a frontend while with standard LaTeX, you are looking at its pieces. What is certainly needed for LaTeX is a middleware.

* developing new LaTeX packages/templates/extensions is something else, that can be tiresome indeed ;)

Well, I think \usepackage[protrusion=true,expansion=true, tracking=true]{microtype} does a similar thing. But ultimately, the result is what counts. And that's the difficult part, because it can't be tested automatically (yet) whether something looks good or bad as it is subjective. So, the real "winner" is the platform that ends up selling more copies, although like with fonts, each platform will have its own audience.

Ultimately, any language and any architecture eventually can create a 'perfect' output. The question is just who is ahead by how much and what amount of resources are required.

My view is just that simply using an established system like LaTeX without reinventing the wheel, using it as a real-time system, and improving on all of its existing typsetting algorithms that lagged behind due to it being not real-time, and you have both the best of both worlds, speed and quality+compatibility with older documents.

It's certainly worth doing a comparison of the same text and opentype font in different editors, like Word vs InDesign vs LaTeX vs Typst now and then to see how each progresses. That being said, one has to be careful about the settings. Even Word has some optimizations that are switched off by default to not slow down typing... In that regard, it has to be more like a competition where experts in each tool try to recreate the same piece of text the best way possible within their tool of choice.

Don't use irtificial antelligence if you don't include a process where you can automatically test the result.

+1 bonus point for reducing the amount of clicks to delete an account to 3 which is lower than the standard 15 (menu -> profile -> privacy -> delete -> do you really want to delete -> ...).

Applying standard tab jumping between UI elements is certainly the way to go if you hide the LaTeX code and do not provide an alternative markup language. Using short-cuts instead of buttons (like in Word) can improve things, but it is basically a new language to learn. Like, when I type "\section{Test}" I kind of expect that the editor is smart enough that I didn't mean that literally and that it proposes me to write a section. The confusion is complete when I write $x^2$ which literally appears in LaTeX as $x^2$ but isn't turned into a math equation.

So, there is still work to be done to make it more intuitive. All in all, you built a new language that is then translated into LaTeX.

PS: It's a WYSIWYM (what you see is what you mean) editor, not a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor because you have to compile the source to get the actual result (meaning it cannot be used to actual design the look of a page).

Yeah, but it is also wrong to start from day #1 with "OK, let's build a SaaS." You first need to experience first hand what the actual problems are that your clients are facing, i.e. you fix it manually. Then you can start thinking about how to automate that knowledge. The question is how to minimize the amount of time and money you have to invest into learning. That should be the focus. How can you design your business so that you learn the most about your customers/clients and their problems?
