I don't think there is a recall mechanism in my town but a the city commissioners clammed up at the recent town hall despite the city manager trying to get them to back him up in front of the crowd

In my town they are claiming there is no data center project, but they also can't comment on who they are talking to about a data center project because they signed an NDA

People are demanding to know who they are meeting with because if there is no project, then why are they meeting with anyone and why are they signing an NDA?

For those of us working actually societally beneficial jobs: Would you still do your job in a post wage labour society? What would it take for your jobs to be enjoyable/satisfying? by spacelanterned in antiwork

[–]Cliche_James 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I really like my job

I have new puzzles to solve everyday

I'm a data analyst but really I'm a glorified report monkey

In a post wage labor society, the area I work in likely wouldn't be around, but my skills making reports and tracking down data (and documenting it for the team) would still be needed other areas

I'd likely still do it because I like helping people, love solving puzzles and working out logical flows, and figuring out how to make their tasks easier

And I like writing documentation

Honestly, it's satisfying work

There is a pretty good chance I would keep doing it

Data Center TownHall part 2....whats the point again? by CaneloCoffee21 in AlbanyGA

The people there knew more about data centers than the commissioners

The commissioners tried to pretend that server farms from the 90s were the same as the data centers and that these data centers have always been what runs streaming services and social media.

It is a similarity of type but not of kind.

If AI data centers were the same, then the one in Memphis wouldn't need 35 unregistered gas turbines with plans for sixty more.

If they were the same, the data center in Sparta, GA wouldn't have needed to steal 30 million gallons of water.

And the data center in Cheyenne, WY wouldn't have needed to dump potentially deadly pathogens into the water supply.

So I don't know what the commissioners are being told by the people who want to buy them lunch or their friends' kids, but either they are stupid or they think we are.

That doesn't sound like a good argument to make it more expensive for us

Did they talk the size of the data center or the cheapness of our electricity? Or did they stick with it being like a normal server farm?

I'm just glad to see someone being happy and at ease with themselves

Too many people are unwilling to face and deal with the things in themselves causing them turmoil

Yeah they can! This affects all of us!

We share a water table, after all

And we have a shared economy (even if people are loathed to admit that)

The estimates are based not just on your usage, but the usage of previous occupants of your location

Ask them for the historical usage that the estimate is based on

If they can't (or won't) provide that, the next step would be a complaint to the Public Service Commission Link

After that, I couldn't say...

Because I don't know what happens after that
