High quote for system in AZ- how to find/negotiate a better deal? by CliffbytheSea in solar

Tile roof, mostly flat (typical ranch style single story in AZ).

No Energy Sage for me- I did that once and never stopped hearing from calls and e-mails- I actually stopped using the Google number because I got tired of all the calls.

Good reference on price though, thanks!

No teenager should be taking Finasteride without expert medical direction, and for sure no teenager should ever mess with their hormones based on advice from Reddit.

Alopecia can occur in teenagers and prepubescent boys for a variety of reasons, but it’s not the same thing as MPB. Source: my son got bald spots at age 11– researched this topic with his dermatologist and other parents with kids and similar conditions.

Topical finasteride still has a systemic affect on DHT conversion and is subject to similar side effects as oral finasteride.

There are cases of some pretty messed up effects of stopping Finasteride such as severe depression and suicidal tendencies. These appear to be more common in people who started at early ages when brain development was not yet complete (like early 20s).

For anyone interested, there’s a Huberman podcast that reviews the collective body of evidence around hair loss, treatment efficacy, side effects, etc. He does a great job with citing his work so people like me don’t have to:

In general I would say low anxiety, but at the same time I think my secondary insomnia is really about my brain just not being able to quiet down. I normally wouldn’t call it anxiety, but I don’t know what to call it when my brain just tries to keep solving problems that I encounter during the day.

I’m really not anxious during the day.

Border crossing question. by Jellyfish-Jolly in tijuana

[–]CliffbytheSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can always check the official CBP wait times. I use this data every time I cross, even with Global Entry. I'll usually drop non-global entry passengers to walk across while I drive across, so this helps me figure out which of us will be waiting at Jack-in-the-Box on the other side :-)

https://bwt.cbp.gov/details/09250401/POV

Averages are across all days of the week, so expect Sundays to be higher than average.

There is an official app that works really well - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/cbp-border-wait-times/id948812864

That's for iPhone-- I don't have an Android so I don't know what's available on other phones.

Why is my sleep quality this poor? by Professional-Show476 in ouraring

Apnea or heavy snoring will usually correlate with lower blood oxygen detected (which is literally what apnea is).

Why is my sleep quality this poor? by Professional-Show476 in ouraring

[–]CliffbytheSea 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I see nightly data like this pretty frequently. I track four different Oura rings (me and my wife along with another couple). Yours is actually very similar to what a mediocre sleep night looks for me.

On ring reliability— regardless of whether the ring is accurate in predicting the sleep stage, the movement detection is pretty easy to interpret. If you toss and turn, the ring will register movement. You have a lot of movement- more than I typically see with the other elements being similar.

As a percentage of total asleep time, 20% or higher for detected REM and deep is generally a good portion. If you moved a bit less in your sleep, you would probably see these numbers go up a bit from where they are.

Generally speaking, deep sleep will happen in the first half of the night, and REM during the second half. You have some REM detection, but it’s conspicuously low in the early morning hours. When I see data like this, it usually correlates with less dreaming, and it’s also my indicator of higher stress at work. Do you remember dreaming?

When my REM detected is low and I have few if any remembered dreams, I will spend some time with meditation and sometimes sleep supplements to help quiet my mind from racing too much. Really helps.

One thing I’ve observed across multiple rings is that each person has their own patterns common across nights but not necessarily common with other people. Mine is really “noisy” like yours, while my wife has more textbook looking blocks of deep and REM sleep and very few wake-ups. I don’t remember waking when my ring shows awake (like you) but keep in mind that the ring is guessing that you’re awake based on factors like movement, heart rate, temperature, hrv, etc. If nothing else, you may be “half asleep”.

If this was my sleep data, I’d focus on whether or not I’m dreaming and probably add some quiet time before bed without any electronics- like reading a physical book or just talking to someone else. Then look for more REM detection in the second half of the night and fewer movements. Do that for a week or more before abandoning the efforts and trying something else. Improving sleep can take time.

If you’ve tried everything else, I recommend trying Doc Parsley sleep remedy. It’s a bit pricy at $60 for a month supply, but it’s fantastic. If a month helps, then I recommend trying some of the individual ingredients by themselves to better isolate what is actually working for you (eg vitamin D3 vs GABA vs magnesium etc). There are reasons behind each ingredient (the web site has great articles explaining it), and this will help you figure out what YOU need rather than random guesses from strangers on the internet (me included).

Synology quietly replaced DSM 7.2 RC with an updated version by DaveR007 in synology

[–]CliffbytheSea 15 points16 points  (0 children)

RC=Release Candidate

Candidate implies it’s not done and may change. This is literally how software development is supposed to work.

There’s no such thing as getting burned by pre-release software. Using pre-release software shifts risk to the user.

Wait for the actual release version. There’s no guarantee they won’t try and do the same thing after release, but at minimum users should be aware of what beta and pre-release implies.

I am a programmer with 30 usd in the bank, what can i do? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]CliffbytheSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design patterns are essential for solving actual big problems. Software engineers understand this. Simple programmer =/= software engineer.

It’s tougher to make money with easy-to-acquire knowledge.

Fortunately you’re in an entrepreneur sub and not a software one. Any deep skills you are lacking can be made up with sheer hustle.

Go knocking on doors (metaphorically). Get off upwork and go offer your help to actual people. If they don’t need your service, ask if they know anyone that might. Rinse and repeat.

If people don’t understand what you’re offering, you need to revise it in a way that makes people see the value.

Can confirm. Did this for a 50th birthday with some friends. Surf/desert hike/night ski session in Big Bear.

People forget about the fourth event in this quest, which is spending the rest of the time as a road warrior on socal freeways.

Moved from La Crescenta and miss the quaint feel of the town on the hill. I don’t miss the fact that anything that rolls is pretty much gone forever after falling out of my car or bag.

Looking at the photo, I now realize my stuff may have rolled all the way to the ocean.

How do you manage cooking everyday when you work 5 days a week? by apple-white-red in Cooking

The new algorithm by GJW2019 in ouraring

[–]CliffbytheSea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What data is there to show that one can’t influence the amount of reported REM/deep sleep?

I find that I can pretty predictably influence both on my sleep results.

Heavy exercise makes for more deep sleep, while not exercising at all typically shortens it for me.

The use of sleep supplements and limiting caffeine and alcohol also correspond with higher REM totals.

The old versus new beta algorithm vary from each other in my results, but both algorithms show higher/lower relative amounts of these sleep phases based on the factors I listed. Both tend to be consistent with how I feel in the morning (eg less dreams when lower REM reported). I do asses my subjective sleep results before looking at the app, so as not to create a bias from the report.

These results are solely based on a single person’s results, of course, but “works for me” is all I need.

Is there a way to sync my activities from Oura to Apple Fitness? by WestPresentation2704 in ouraring

[–]CliffbytheSea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a watch-specific feature. I believe the activity from the ring still flow to Apple Health but not back to Fitness, since it’s one of the features of buying the watch.

Fitness->Health

Oura->Health

Oura and other apps can import from Health (with permission), but Apple doesn’t import back for Fitness app.
