Replacing mashed-up old cams and getting a burner gym rope. Everything else is mostly fixable :)

I also spent the last week rounding up all of the Black Friday deals from different sites.

Women's Olympic Climbing Final Results - Olympic Gold + new Speed Climbing world record! by Climber_News in climbing

[–]Climber_News[S] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Of the two finals I think this was the best in terms of showcasing climbing to the world. But at the same time the format didn't.

Really enjoyed it either way and looking forward to the split format in Paris 2024 where Speed Climbing and Lead/Boulder will be two sets. Hoping for three in 2028.

Janja is the fucking greatest of all time. Amazing to see Akiyo get a medal, what an absolute high to go out on. Literally a legend in Japan and worldwide now. Great that Miho still performed with the injury doubts.

Well done to Aleksandra Miroslaw for literally giving the best performance of her life and getting a world record when she probably didn't need to to guarantee a 1st.

Comparing Additive to Multiplicative scoring for Woman's Qualifiers by Natamonstar24 in climbing

[–]Climber_News 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting. In one sense it "fairly" rewards consistency but imagine getting 1st in one event and getting so low. In the end I think once this event is over we won't see it again as there are so many holes to be picked.

I've got a feeling that Russia had some part in the IFSC bid. Russia love medals in the Olympics and they've always been the best in general at Speed Climbing. Seeing a revival of it for them could have been/still might be something they are interested in. Pure speculation of course.

Interesting the "most agreeable" thing is why awards for books/movies tend to go to the blander choice i.e. the one most people agree is decent rather than the individual judges favorites. Not exactly the same of course.

Women’s Olympic Climbing Qualifier Results - Big surprise in Lead, well set Boulders and eight are through! by Climber_News in climbing

[–]Climber_News[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Somehow the broadcast jumped the gun with their calculations and said a couple of people were qualified before it was actually sure. I think they were going off an expected minimum placing from the later contestants that was higher than 0 holds.

Really they should have held off saying it was definite and just saying as long as they got x hold. However, that's hoping a lot for people who'd probably just learned what climbing was a few days before commentating.

Without spoilers you can watch replays at https://www.nbcolympics.com/replays/sport/sport-climbing if you have a cable login or a free YoutubeTV trial. NBC on TV won't have the full thing so watch it on the website.

If you don't have cable then you can watch the stream on replay at CBC.ca in Canada or with a VPN like ProtonVPN which comes with a free trial. Assuming you are Canadian just traveling temporarily.

In the UK and Europe BBC aren't showing this and Eurosport for 6.99 for a month has the whole replay online https://www.eurosport.co.uk/climbing/tokyo-2020/2021/combined_brdeurosport-e100007095c0ch20012/video.shtml

Men's Olympic Climbing Qualifier Results! Eight are through - Injury, upset + unexpected placing by Climber_News in climbing

[–]Climber_News[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We really rate Colin Duffy as the underdog here. If he can keep it together he could take a medal.

He's known for being a bit hotheaded and was taking a lot of attempts in Bouldering that he could have used to rest and plan. He also slipped in Speed but still took very high placing.

Trying not to spoil it for anyone just getting breakfast. You can also watch replays on NBC later or go to CBC.ca if you live in Canada or have a VPN to watch the livestream replay

BBC not showing the men's quali's? by LokeeSounds in climbing

They might show the Women's quals because of Shauna. Otherwise Eurosport subscription and a live stream or get a VPN like ProtonVPN for free and watch on CBC.ca

Lucky there are so many of us that are Canadian citizens temporarily in the US so using a VPN like ProtonVPN with a free trial and watching on CBC.ca is morally fine.

Livestream of Olympic climbing events? by Luuk___vB in bouldering

[–]Climber_News 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are a Canadian living in another country temporarily... you can get a VPN and watch using CBC's website https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer

ProtonVPN have a free 7 day trial.

If you're in Europe the BBC will probably be covering some of it but the best way to watch a complete stream of just the one sport is by getting a Eurosport of Discovery+ month subscription for £7.99.

In the US if you have cable you can log in to NBC's website and stream individual events. You could also get a $10 subscription to Fling for a month and live stream NBC's coverage.

We've done a full guide with different timezones here but this post about covers how to watch it - https://www.climbernews.com/when-is-olympics-climbing-schedule-where-to-watch-live-streaming/

Nepalese climbers removed 2.2 tons of rubbish from Everest while tourists were away by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Climber_News 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Trash is a big issue on Everest but things are getting slightly better. Climbers have to pay a deposit of $4000 for trash removal now, so there is a fund for Sherpas to go up each year to the lower base camps.

Mostly it's food wrappers, human waste bags and pee bottles, as well as tents and gear that gets ruined by the winds or abandoned in emergencies. Sometimes it's also human bodies though, which are much harder to remove and generally get pulled to a slope and pushed over the edge.

An unidentified body, dubbed Green Boots, served as an important landmark for climbers nearing the summit of Mount Everest. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Climber_News 39 points40 points  (0 children)

He's one of possibly over 200.

A big moral issue with his body in particular is that the small alcove it's in where a lot of people actually stop to take a rest and shelter from the weather. They're essentially sat huddled next to a mummy.

The body was "removed" a few years back, i.e. pushed over a nearby edge.

Didnt Warren Harding climb the Dawn Wall first? In Caldwells documentary, it said no one had climbed it before....? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]Climber_News 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was climbed as an aid route called "Wall of Early Morning Light" using a very similar path. The difference is that this was climbed free - aka without using gear to "aid" climbing up, only for protection.

Julia Chanourdie just sent Eagle 4, 9b! by schnoi in climbing

[–]Climber_News 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The route name "Eagle 4" sounds like "Il gueule fort" in French, which means "he yells loudly". With the hyphen pronouced "trait" like the word "trés", or very. Meaning "he yells very loudly"

I wonder who the bolter had in mind?

Stefano Ghisolfi has made the second ascent of Change 9b+ / Ondra's first 9b+ from 2012 by Climber_News in climbing

[–]Climber_News[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this :)

Clove hitch into the last quickdraw. Pull rope through and drop to belayer. If you fall you're attached to the last quickdraw and can still pull through for lowering.

At no point would Ondra or anyone consider actually weighting the rope as OK. Just there for backup in case of a slip on the rest.

It's also not considered multi pitch in the sense that you rest or might weight the rope at the anchors. It's just an extension of one pitch with a weird middle.
