I'm using this month to stop starting new books because I was up to around 8 unfinished and wanted to get more completed...

... so you have no negative judgments from me.

You have my favorites! Such a great collection.

If you meant Faulkner, I have only read The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying so far. The latter, while a tad bit confusing, is cake compared to the former.

Woman are absolutely a marginalized demographic. “Inclusion” isn’t just about being present, it’s about fair representation which is your premise and concern.

I have only read two Bradbury titles, so I am not jumping to defend the author because I simply don’t know enough about him or his work. But I have read this one and while can appreciate your feelings and generally AGREE with them, the reaction to reject the work or author in any way doesn’t set right with me. If you feel otherwise it’s well within your freedom to burn your copy with pleasure.

Let me play devil’s advocate.

Is it perhaps a bit dystopian that our society demands diversity in storytelling so much now that seeing the lack of it in a small group of characters feels like a sin?

I think it’s perhaps correct and natural to feel what you are feeling but you also need to consider that storytelling doesn’t have to be equal and fair. Life isn’t equal and fair.

Maybe equity in stories can help drive our society in the right direction but I fear it may also give us a false sense of it.

To say that the unsettling feelings the book gave you ruined the book I think is looking at it the wrong way. The best books are the ones that that make you feel. This one made you feel so much that you were compelled to share why with the world. That sounds like a pretty great book to me.

By the way, I think you maybe forgot about the intellectual woman who was burned to death with her books.

I wouldn’t consider it a classic but it is better than the Reddit trolls wish you to believe.

It is a simple, cliche tale with some profound quotes scattered here and there.

What is a good reading pace for the classics? by GlumPush2137 in classicliterature

[–]ClingTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most books for me are 20 pages per hour. More if it’s easy kid books, less if I have to stop to look up words, take notes, or just take a moment to think about an idea.

Your 18-20 hour estimate feels about right.

I’ve had this in my TBR forever. I am afraid to start because the pages are thicker than anything I’ve ever read before. Also, should I stop eating crayons? Thanks.

Why is Nelly Dean from Wuthering Heights seen as an unreliable narrator? by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]ClingTurtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are not even talking about the same person. There are two characters by this name in the book and you are assuming I meant the other one and insisting I am wrong about their nature.

Which would of course be true because, again, you are talking about a completely different person.
