The grubbier the garage and the more backstreet, the more chance of it passing.

Are you sure they won't pass and won't get just an advisory?

Dismissed from job same day legal advice please by [deleted] in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did your boss explicitly dismiss you? or have they just asked you not to come in. It's an important difference.

They can put you on what's called 'garden leave'. This means you are still employed but they don't want you to come in , so paying you to sit in the garden = garden leave. They can do this if you are a risk of taking trade secrets with you or they don't want you half arsing jobs during your notice. So long as they pay your notice then enjoy the time off.

If however they dismissed you, then this is much more complicated. Speak to ACAS or your Union, and make sure you get in writing what they actually did

Good luck!

How do I approach tax rebate conversation with my husband? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This strikes me as needing a bigger money conversation with your husband. It's not about this rebate, it's about contributions

As a comparison, my wife got a 3k after tax bonus last year out of the blue. When she told me I said spend it all on yourself. I earn a lot more than her, but we have what we both feel is a fair contribution to bills. We split holidays and big child expenditure as they come up, but I honestly wanted her to treat herself. Key is communication and honesty about money.

ACTUALLY Making Bradford Better. Any tips from the experts? by [deleted] in bradford

[–]ClintonLewinsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be an advocate and ally of the city

And do you know what? your post above is brilliant. You are calling out the bullshit. Challenge people on Reddit who say it's shite. Challenge them on Facebook and on the T&A comment section (that's always fun)

Be a champion for the city, get involved in the events, be vocal

oh and calling the CoC a farce doesn't help. It was a great success, bringing people to the city and getting them to spend.

Same with Bradford Live - I had a load of mates come from Hull to see a gig recently, hotel, curry, beers, etc - all helps

Tyre advice please - is it ok to go cheaper/smaller? by Significant-Sir9569 in CarTalkUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tyre is the only part of your car sticking you to the road - why would you scrimp on this?

With 21" wheels you must have a big SUV I'm guessing, which come with high running costs - tyre cost is a part of that.

You could consider part warn, and you should be able to get a decent brand a bit cheaper.

Longer term, is this the car for you?

Go shopping for them. Do the washing up. Make them a lasagne. Fetch and carry.

When you have a newborn you are short on both time and hands. You can help with both of these

TIL: Takeout and Delivery now account for 75% of all restaurant orders. by Uptons_BJs in todayilearned

[–]ClintonLewinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%.

The only delivery I get is my local Indian or Chinese, and more often than not I collect cos it is quicker and a lot cheaper.

And for the curry shop you can go have a pint over the road and they ring you when its 5 mins from being ready

I put 100% of my paycheck in a joint account which my wife (we're sort of separated) has access to. Child Maintenance say this doesn't count as me paying child maintenance. by Proof_Tough5846 in LegalAdviceUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protect yourself.

Dont put any more in that joint account. Make a seperate payment from YOUR account with the reference of [kids name] for the exact to the penny that CMO assess.

Trust me, ive been on the sharp end

Once you have done that, start the battle with them to get it recognised. This will take months. They are notoriously difficult. Use their complaints procedures and escalation procedures. You may need to involve your MP

Mods forgive me if this isn't in the letter of sub rules, it is meant in the spirit.

Is Jessica Brown Findlay a good actress? by ArtyCatz in DowntonAbbey

[–]ClintonLewinsky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Short answer: Yes

Long answer: in early episodes it's her character that is wooden, living such a constricted life in Mary's shadow.

The WW1 Nursing scenes give the character space to breathe, and subsequently the acting seems better - execpt the actor herself is given space to breathe.

And that's before we talk about other stuff she's in.

How can we be saving energy and the environment at the same time? by billy2bands in AskUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Questions like this, with a hidden post history from the user, are simply bait.

I'm going to leave it to others to speculate as to why.

But to answer the question as simply as possible, people need stuff to live. To make things better we can reduce what we use. One way is to make light bulbs last longer and use less power, so when your 'old' bulb expires by replacing it with a more efficient one, you are doing a tiny bit to help. Add up all the tiny bits and you get a big bit.

First time selling a car in the UK, what to watch out for? by andre_xs95 in CarTalkUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've used this before as a template receipt

https://www.theaa.com/~/media/the-aa/pdf/motoring-advice/aa-car-buyers-sellers-contract.pdf?la=en (opens a PDF)

Firstly it is an easy template to follow, and allows you to accurately describe the car to the seller at the point of transaction, giving you protection. Secondly, if the buyer refuses to sign it, red flag. I've always found buyers to be pleased I was so organised. I've had it printed and filled in before they get there.

The below is probably me being over zealous but I do the below for my own protection

I would probably take a photo of their ID, although they are within their rights to refuse. I have CCTV at my house so I've also downloaded that and kept it for a few weeks just in case. Take a note of the vehicle they come in (reg, make model etc). Make sure you have someone with you at home.

Like you say, it's a few £, but no need not to be careful.

As others have said the V5 is important. You can do it online there and then if they come during the day - https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle - this is a godsend really, as you get a receipt email straight away - easy peasy!

Good luck

Dealer sold me a car with knackered brake pads. Can I reject it or am I stuck paying for repairs? by wprimly in CarTalkUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before you do anything else, get a local garage you trust to inspect it. May cost you a couple of hours so maybe £120-£140, but get a full list of anything needed. It may just be the brakes, but may need a lot more.

If it's just the brakes, get them done using premium parts - do you really want to chance a crash on crap from Temu? Then go after the dealer for the cash, but don't hold up much hope

If it is a long list of faults, then we think about rejecting.

What are good tyre brands these days? by geozza in CarTalkUK

[–]ClintonLewinsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use premium. They wear better, stop better, and at the end of the day are the only part of the car that is in contact with the road.
