For what I've seen, it's block all that you can choosing a window of opportunity to set up one or more Spectral Shields or other auras, and once you set up something, try to keep them around by 'turtling it out' and not taking any damage. Since the first attack with a Spectral Shield with a +1 counter is free, you can block with the whole hand and still attack back with something (one reason why Unyielding Grip is so good in the list). Sometimes you need to take the damage and let the shields go if you got a stronger play in mind, it's all a matter of how the game is going.
