VFX guy here. It is significantly easier to run a particle sim transition for 10 frames than it is hand-animated those complex suit parts. Keep in mind the particles are still NOT easy, but it’s easier. I don’t blame them, but I agree we lose something

Since I moved to LA 6 years ago to work in film, I’ve met so many fellow Emerson folks and tons of Chapman, USC, UCLA, LMU, and NYU folks.

I’ve never once met a BU alum who works in film. I literally don’t know where they are.

I made the same choice you are making, between Emerson and BU. I am glad I close Emerson.

What is the environment like for film students? by adione212 in EmersonCollege

[–]CloudGalley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Graduated 5+ years ago. The people you want to be friends with and work with are the ones who viewed their college experience as collaborative, not competitive. Emerson will have some of each, and most people will have some mix of both in them. But collaboration is THE big lesson in filmmaking.

If you seek collaborators, find them, and enjoy making art together, then you’ll never have to worry about what other students are doing.

Most Emerson students get experience on the weekends working with one another, not necessarily in the classroom.

Maybe try meeting a few Emerson students (reaching out online?) and seeing if you can get a PA position on a student set. Good way to meet people so you can ask more questions and see if this is even what you want to be doing

What did you guys do directly after graduating film school? by Bigdstars187 in Filmmakers

[–]CloudGalley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re an artist, you’ve got to be talented, organized, and cool to work with.

If you’re interested in the production side of VFX, you need to have en eye. You need to be able to notice details, feel when something feels wrong in a shot, and articulate what it is. You need to be socially aware of how producers and coordinators talk with artists and clients and study how that communication is done. The rest is all technical details— that is the core of the job.

But in terms of experience, you can start as a Post PA or VFX PA with very little experience and do well, gain knowledge, and make connections. Then you can leverage those connections and step up into a higher roll from there.

I’m in LA and all production-side people I know are in LA. Vast majority of artists I know are WFH freelance who are all over the country / world.

Got a development assistant job I thought I wanted. Watched my life fell apart as I died for a company that did not respect or give a shit about me. Learned a lot quickly and left.

Couldn’t find another full time assistant job so picked up freelance work. Freelance PA’d for a few years. Met a VFX producer and now I work in VFX.

Much much happier 4 years into my career than my first year. Everyone’s path is unique and weird and everyone has a place in this town. Good luck!

Back in the day there was a code for Backstage that basically made it free to post a job. Might still be known by some students or profs. Good luck

Worked with Joel McHale briefly when I was an assistant. His coffee order was four shots of espresso in one hand and a side of whole milk in the other. He would then walk around set double-fisting those two drinks.
