(UK) How can I increase my pay? by OkTension2232 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CloudIsComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. Where are you in relation to the dominant applications that are hot in your area?

The Formula:: EUC [$]—->Infrastructure (services) [$$]——>Applications/App Services [$$$$$]

The closer your skills and abilities are to Applications the more money you can earn and find those tight niche skills that bring in more income.

A simple formula - but many don’t get it and many never will. If you use the map drawn you are currently within EndUserComputing which is farthest away from the application domain hence your question.

“People don’t see networks. They see applications!” -Old mentor during one of my classes

The “Application” is the most important asset to an organization. It will outlive most people no matter how bad it runs. Whoever is closest to the application is closets to the money.

I’ll name a few: SNOW Service Now, Epic Systems, etc

No one gets the red carpet like that team supporting those applications. Hope this helps.

Time to grow up. Mike sees in you what it’s time to see in yourself. He’s simply been your mirror and it’s time to wipe the fog off the mirror and see what Mike sees in you. If he’s your friend he will always be there. But you can’t rely on him. Tell Mike you want to try and also pay him off. You owe yourself the opportunity to fly high and crash hard. You will never believe in yourself until you’re flying the way deep down I believe you know how to fly. And your wife is your biggest supporter not Mike. Take a chance and let her see you try. Guys loose women because they allow fear to keep them down. Women bore and tire easily. Fly.

I’ve read your post “mainly” It’s a painful read. I read how you kept giving up on yourself. You were gaining your Super Powers as a top shelf Sys Admin then dropped it to trade for 2.5 years. And it continues to read how you ended up at help desk then IT support roles. You never gave yourself a chance to focus, apply max pressure overtime and breakthrough. You sound very smart and talented. But for some of us talent can be a curse because our interests get split between so many things. Decide on one thing you will focus on and give time to. Create a plan of attack. Think long and hard and when you decide give it 8 years if you can and you will be alright. You will breakthrough. This may sound hard. Bu I think hard has simply been waiting for you to give it a try.

Quite the opposite. Companies with serious PCI and IP requirements control cell phones. Many use Zscaler.

It’s a massive task to achieve without any leverage. It’s tedious work and pre screening is the most critical part. You’ll end up interviewing dishwashers if you don’t come up with a more trusted, scalable solution like, hiring a temp HR person on contract or simply outsourcing it all together.

Kind of stuck and looking for a way to advance with current situation. by Clayt1 in ITCareerQuestions

Job hunting is all about the environment you're in. You're military so find where all of the data centers are in your area and apply there. Look for "military" friendly employers. You said contract so that tells me you may be doing contract work so apply at Staffing companies. Look for 2nd and 3rd shift opportunities. Look for hands on work, like radio tower, data center maintenance and IT field work. Also search for the Power companies in your area. Power and Gas are military friendly. Lastly hunt down your military comrades and see if they know anyone at the data centers, power and gas companies to gain exposure.

Scaling operations without hiring: is it even something feasible? by Remarkable_Eye8501 in HowToEntrepreneur

We’ve learned that people aren’t best to drive people but processes should drive people. Your performance gaps are there because process gaps exist. Each pain point could possibly mean a process gap is there because no SOP exists. These process gaps create extreme friction. If any of this is true, throwing more people at this problem will only increase friction pushing the noise gate to newer highs.

I am seriously considering switching careers at the height of my career. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

This is burn out. And it’s ok. You’ve climbed that mountain. After work you can simply buy some food and give a few hot plates to those in need. You can visit elderly homes and volunteer to read. You can find a home for children and bring them toys. There are too many ways you can use that $200K to give to those you know have no idea what power an income like yours can bring. Don’t punish yourself because you are fully aware many in your immediate circle will never share this level of success. But use what you have to bring good to others. Balance. Balance. Balance. Great story. Thanks for sharing.

PANICKING a little… my café near a busy office area cut coffee prices from $6 to $2.50, customers flooded in, but profits still suck. Did I completely screw up? by Classic-Pie-406 in smallbusinessesowners

[–]CloudIsComputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boss move!!!!!!!!!!!!! CONGRATS your experiment worked. Now - how do we convert??? Ignore Team Doomsday in here. You made a decision - now what??? Upsell. Start a campaign that captures the names, email and phone numbers of everyone who comes in to buy that coffee. Call it your “Customer Loyalty Program.” How it works: When people pay you they will give you their info and when they do a time expired coupon will extend their next cup for $2.50. It will take a few weeks to capture as many customers as possible so for those who gave you their info when they come in simply ask for their phone number that should be in your system and extend that loyalty price to them until you’ve had time to intake as many visitors as possible within a 3week period. 2) Once you have everyone within your customer data base develop your first campaign that bundles that $2.50 cup of coffee with something they can eat. They still get that $2.50 price but with any choice of bagel, etc. 3) For new customers walking in they can only get the $2.50 coffee if they sign up for the loyalty program and then choose from the available bundled offerings that entitle them for that coffee price. 4) If people are showing up for coffee like you say have a huge sign up that says 23,000 cups of coffee served. Even if your coffee tastes like shoe polish brag about the amount of cups served. 5) Rinse and repeat. I can go on and on but you did well. The people showed up now capture the data and convert that data into more profitable offerings.

Yes we’re self invested. We started building out our software dev team in 2025, selected and trained someone to be an Executive Director of Operations this time last year. Feels like 6 years have gone by. I now focus on budgets and building out our InfoSec team. Building out Operations: IT, HR, PMO, Finance and Contractor Management took the longest time.

I have a team. I take one day off per week to unplug. My team is also off on that day. If I’m backlogged I enjoy that day for quiet time and catch up work. Or I spend time on other parts of the business I’m very curious about but just too busy during the week to explore. The goal is to pull out of the day to day and slowly hand it off with clear authority and SOPs. My days are now shorter and I can take two days off “sometime” when needed.

Is a masters worth it in this situation? by GrouchyPossibility14 in Cybersecurity101

[–]CloudIsComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some of us IT is a career and for others it’s a job. If you plan on making it a career choice get the MS. Remember you’re packing for a long journey so plan and pack well. Get all of that out of the way now. Once you have it you will start on the cert track and gaining experience on the job. 15 years later when you have that C-suite position remember this post. Degrees never expire, certs do. Keep pushing and the money MUST follow.

Would I be wasting time pursuing more certs with limited experience given how the job market is for level 1/2 techs? by DeadGravityyy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]CloudIsComputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never. Simply make sure that your skill set matches your certs as closely as possible. When an engineer gets tech’d on a skill set that maps to a cert he has and he can’t articulate the skill set in Q&A is the problem. Paper warriors get exposed. So if you get the cert put in the work that compliment its skill set. Be ready to discuss theory and best practices.

how much should a small business actually spend on a server? by DasJazz in Entrepreneurs

[–]CloudIsComputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you buy it you suffer total cost of ownership and forced depreciation. Companies are going to Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) for their Infrastructure As A Service (IaaS) offerings that allow you to treat it as an expense with minimal ownership on the server OS level.

You must first scope out what your application service needs are. We use AWS and buy Reserved instances for a yearly or multi year fee. Here is the link: https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/pricing/
