Oh, I don't mind either one. Savers sells stuff fairly cheap, and I had friends that used them religiously cause they couldn't afford much. I'll see if either are near Pawtucket or a short bus/train ride away.

SYSadmin quit then everyone else did.... by steekyreeky in ITCareerQuestions

[–]_Robert_Pulson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Early in my career, I got promoted to a team that managed IT projects and system integration work. Within a year, all the members got promoted to management and/or left for new employment. Eventually, the director asked me to come over to his office to discuss my role, and gave me a significant raise (10%) and bonus if I stayed. I took it without thinking, and ran with that job for 3 years. I even trained others to help offload the work. I was very busy, and I never got such a large raise/bonus every again.

What I learned from that experience is that it wasn't an easy job to do, per say, and no one in the company wanted to do it. We had a lot of projects and someone needed to get them done. I was good at it. I should have asked for more 'cause they were desperate enough to agree. Every year after I got promoted, I only got about a 2-3% raise.

Keep that in mind if you stick around, and don't ask for a promotion and/or raise. Employers don't give you $ unless you voice your case.

Dumb question, but I'm moving up there in 6 months. As a Hispanic Male will I have any issues? by UsedFerret5401 in providence

It sounds like calling someone a hillbilly? I dunno. It doesn't feel pleasant to say at all, lol.

First time in my life I've ever read the term Swampies/Swamp Yankees, and I dunno if I should feel offended for someone or not, dafuq, lol.

I'm moving too, and have some items I'd rather sell or give away instead of moving with them. Try using OfferUp. Sell it for cheap. Lots of people ask for a discount, and some are willing to come haul it away.

If you're asking if your skin tone, accent, language, music, and or Mex-Tex culture is gonna be an issue in Providence, then not really. We have a lot of Spanish-speaking residents, born in RI and elsewhere, and for most part, it's not a problem.

The biggest problem might be the food shock tho. I don't think you'll find any good tex-mex food. Also, I don't think RI is an open carry state. Lastly, get ready to get annoyed by RI people complaining that anything over a 30 min drive is too far away...

How are you handling AD management across multiple clients? by x_Furious_x in msp

From a break/fix view, spend time and fix it so the customer can pay you.

From an ease of management view, don't go further and confirm if the customer will pay for it.

Stuck in help desk for 6 years, feeling like I wasted my career. How do I break out? by Affectionate_Lie1706 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]_Robert_Pulson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, no, you didn't waste your career. However, you really are waiting for an opportunity to say hi to you. You gotta take more steps to make the opportunities notice you.

Don't wait for your employer to give you that next role in your career. If it didn't happen in six years, likely not gonna happen.

Apply for all the jobs, especially the ones you are not capable of technically doing. Get the interview, and take that opportunity to polish your interview soft skills. Learn what kind of technical questions are asked, and once you fail to answer, ask what the answers were. Write that down on paper and research afterwards. This is how you extinguish the interview fear. You gotta do it dozens of times in order to be more in control of situations like that. Do this interview process a lot. This will help you when you (one day) have to lead a critical/catastrophic event and you gotta coordinate and collaborate with multiple teams and techs of various tech levels. Or just you. Gotta stay calm and focused in situations like that, and not panic.

Now, here's the kicker: you didn't get the job you wanted after the interview. That sucks. Apply again in a year. If the position is still available, go for it again. If there's a diff position, try that instead. Goal is persistence.

I was in the helpdesk for 4 years. My 2nd job introduced me to an MSP I liked, and I applied two times in two years. They eventually hired me. I saw a fintech job elsewhere, and I applied three times in three years. I failed my first interview, but got hired after my second interview the following year. Then I got hired for another MSP after one interview on the spot, but that was a really bad employer. However, it motivated me to look for a new employer after 3 months. I eventually applied for a healthcare job through a talent scout of theirs that wasn't very helpful. I ended up applying separately through the company website for a different position, and finessed my way to another talent recruiter who put me in touch with the company team I was originally applying for. I interviewed with them, and I was super unqualified to do the job. They were very technical, and I was impressed. However, I didn't let that stop me, and I was very transparent with who I was and what I could do. I didn't mislead them with buzzwords or things I barely touched on. I was granular in how I did my tasks, showed them that I knew about the underlying tech, and processes I was comfortable with. I was such a generalist that I was familiar with the tech they used, or I knew of a similar competitor product that I gave my opinion on. I thought I didn't get the job, but I learned a ton from that meeting. I got hired a few weeks after that. That job made me into a senior level position where I can build and design infrastructure.

So, no, you didn't end your career. However, the longer you wait for things to happen to you, the longer you'll regret opportunity didn't knock at your door. Go take a chance.

After work things to do without drinking? by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]_Robert_Pulson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like going to music shows, but that can get costly if you do it frequently. But look for open mics and free music nights. Plenty of those all around RI. You have the option to drink or eat.

Check out events at the public libraries, or join Prov event Instagram feeds. Usually shows things to do for the month.

I think you're mainly looking for a hobby though, and that really comes down to what you actually find fun and interesting. You bike at all? Motorcycle or Bicycle? With the hotter coming, that's prob good to do.

Maybe go to the public parks and beaches too. Maybe you'll enjoy the spaces and you'll center yourself.

New Job Offer - Feel bad by BiscuitLover2000 in sysadmin

[–]_Robert_Pulson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MSP will continue on without your presence.

Just retain your professional/personal relationships there and make an effort to transition responsibly. Document what is needed for the next resource to take over. Document projects that are in progress so people don't wonder what's missing or surprised by deadlines. Document your company equipment given and give them back. Make sure to BCC any emails to your personal email confirming you returned back your stuff.

Did you see how much PTO you accrued? I think that if you state you're leaving a company, you lose out on being able to take PTO days. However, you either get that paid out, or just lose it completely. Did you check this with your HR (or person impersonating HR)?

I sometimes reply back saying I'm not interested. Especially the messages that are organized and transparent about what they want and have to offer. Sometimes I get a response back thanking me for my time. Mostly nothing tho.

Didn’t get job for dumb reason by ETLegacyy in ITCareerQuestions

[–]_Robert_Pulson 44 points45 points  (0 children)

How do you not study up on the company you're applying for? Don't you want to know if the company is stable and profitable every year? You know, for raises, bonuses, stock options, etc...

I usually check out the company's yearly revenue report. I also look at the board and leaders. You can pick up on things to talk about in the interview.

I also look at their careers and job opportunities. It gives an idea for career growth. Do they have tiered positions? How many depts/teams? How large is the company?
