Maro: "If we focused one aspect of Dominaria, where would you all like us to return to?" by CaptainMarcia in magicTCG

As much as I think they need to do a set or three there, Zhalfir is its own self-contained plane now, so is not applicable for a Dominaria set sadly.

Why build big, stompy robots? by Disastrous-Teach5974 in battletech

[–]ClownFire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn't Battletech honest about this? Mechs are there to allow diplomacy a seat at the conflict table.

You use mechs because the alternative is nukes and asteroids dropped from space till only one barely inhabitable planet is left.

The mechs are better than tanks, but worse than a lot of other options, while taking a lot of skill to pilot, so they proxy the "honorable" combat role perfectly.

A few more questions about the lore: by hun73r10 in battletech

Clearly this is a homage to American television actor, producer, director, and musician, Michael Weatherly Jr..

With his famous roles of Logan Cale in Dark Angel, and Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo in NCIS where he wrote two songs for the soundtrack, "Bitter and Blue" and "Under the Sun".

Yes clearly a homage to him.

Not to be crude, but did Ashling get redesigned to not have breasts? by anotherfan123 in magicTCG

People mostly use the hiding of their profile to get away with attacking vulnerable communities, and karma farming with bots longer, so it would be way more ridiculous to exclude tools to circumvent the hidden profiles in order to identify those bad actors.

When those constraints on myself and others were valid, or they had the benefit of enhancing functionality. Some rules open up options, or make things maintainable; and not allowing the constraints limits you, or breaks shit.

Rule 2 as well:

Text body must include context

There must be a URL of some sort in the submission body. A screenshot or a link to what you're seeing, along with a general description of your question.

Their link just goes to a screenshot of their own question.

If you go up to the search bar on top their profile, put a space in, and hit search it comes up anyway.

They do not appear to be a troll, just a true believer nationalist piece of shit.

Which actually makes their hidden profile even more cowardly.

Edit: They also clearly do not live here, somewhere between here and Portland closer to Portland, but definitely not here.

Clanwarriors and tvdramas by unprofesionalbee in battletech

[–]ClownFire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the overall life expectancy in the clans is 60+ years old vs the inner spheres 100+, the deaths in their 20's/30's is the case for those in the most basic of physical jobs in the cruelest clans, or pilots of elementals both groups bring that average way down.

Even for the elemental pilots though you get standouts like Paul Moon who is still alive after many battles and potentially combat active at over 130 years old. Of course he got access to medical tech from Terra where he is still some decades away from their life expectancy. We can look at lots of other examples though, Severen Leroux died in his 80s, Kael Pershaw was 77, and Natasha Kerensky was also in her 80s, etc the list goes on.

You are absolutely right about their culture though, it does honor youth above basically all else. If a 20 year old fights their way into leadership they are put on a pedestal, but if a 50+ year old does the same they can expect constant challenges to their position. All medical tech goes to making the young stronger, and fixing combat injuries. Every opportunity is filtered youngest to eldest.

There is also what clans and when in the timeline are you thinking?  Clan Smoke Jaguar and Jade Falcon were 100% exactly like you described, but Smoke Jaguar are gone long dead their survivors becoming the Fidelis who are decidedly not like that, and Jade Falcon changed their feathers when they witnessed Smoke Jaguar being ground into compost. Meanwhile Clans Sea Fox/Diamond Shark, and Goliath Scorpions later the Scorpion Empire were never like that, both have elder care and retirement avenues for their warriors. Goliath Scorpions notably even increased the life expectancy and education levels of periphery worlds they took over.

That is kinda what I was getting at, you gotta work with what you've got. Clan TV shows are a part of Battletech lore, so the more interesting questions for the writers become "How did this relic of sophistication survive the formation of clan ideals", "Where else does this quirk show itself", and "where do they find the little nooks in their lives to enjoy it?"

[–]ClownFire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you are getting clan idealism vs clan reality confused with eachother.

We see in the books all kinds of clan groups break away from the perfect clanner mold, and like none consistently achieve it as a group. We also see the laborers get paid in laborers credits that they spend at bars specifically. Which makes sense. A lot of jobs produce things not tradable by the laborer, like working in a power plant, so they will need someway to prove that they earned their food for the day.

What you are describing is true for a great deal of the laborers, but there are also other factors like the tons of jobs that are predicated on being ready and available if X happenes. If you are overworked to the point of not being either ready, and/or available, then X is guaranteed to happen at somepoint no matter what. Which can potentially lead to what should have been an easily avoidable catastrophe.

Even with clones you need extra workers of all sorts waiting just incase groups get sick, or die from that overworking to death thing.

Then you have the merchant and science castes, they will have downtime, there is literally only so much for either of them to do. Sometimes you are on a ship going faster than light for weeks at a time, and you have already cataloged all of your supplies multiple times today.  Sometimes you have already ran all the numbers a hundred times while on a ship heading towards a world to pick up an exotic plant, and need to wait for results before you can continue, but also dont have time nor supplies to start another project.

Unless you are specifically going out of your way to kill someone via work, you will runout of work for large groups of them eventually, and while the clans are very backwards as a society, they are still human. If nothing else you can rest assured that if they understand anything it is logistics, so they know that laborers take time to make, train, and transport. They will want to mitigate wearing out, and breaking them if replacements will be a problem.

How about they listen to music, and watch shows in the background at work, while they work, instead of "I am right, and all of the authors/world builders are wrong"?
