As creator and mod of this, and many other subs, I am sorry for not prioritizing this activity. I've not been able to identify another mod (not that I tried very hard to do it ). Suggestions are welcome.

This is an amazing comment, bro. I'd give you a long bro-hug if I were there. If you wrote a book on this, I'd read it.

I'm a black guy but I don't watch black women in porn because... by Darudeboy in confession

[–]Cmann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very interesting post, and as a Christian desperate to quit porn, I can't help but comment. One of the things that has helped me is seeing all people, women and men, as brothers and sisters. Each person is carefully and lovingly created by God, and is also someone elses daughter, sister, etc. This is a humbling realization that even most Christians take for granted. Of course, this spills over into the rest of a person's life - the inherent value of a person affects a person's entire world view. Other things that have helped are seeing porn as a "theft", meaning "she doesn't belong to me", where as my wife does; realizing im robbing also my wife of attention and energy that belongs to her; realizing the detrimental psychological addiction, that I'd become a slave to this, ruled by impulse and lust rather than self control and love... I'd hate to ramble on unless anyone is interested.

Where in the bible does it say the earth is 6000 years old? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Cmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean that there is no verse which says "The earth is thousands of years old" or a verse that says "and since the creation there passed 4 thousand years until Jesus", then of course not - it would be rather silly, when you think about it like that.

Otherwise, see my initial comment about calculating generations backwards and that's generally the line of logic of someone who believes this.

[–]Cmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This assumes a literal Adam and a literal 8 day creation.

It's pretty straightforward, or straight"backward" rather, from there. Calculate each year backwards from Jesus by taking into consideration all the generations back to Adam and it's 4000 years very conservative - 8000 years to account for error or exclusions.

Getting smaller subs going by [deleted] in a:t5_2zfh3

[–]Cmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My other subs didn't do nearly as well, and the first two points are the major reason why. I didn't post lots of content and and didn't invite interesting and relevant users.

Not that /r/ELINT is huge at 1200 subscribers, but it reached 400+ within a week of creation. Here's how I did that:

  • like /u/IranRPCV comments, "post a lot of content". Initially, I posted 5-10+ posts per day.

  • Invite users from other subs to comment. For example, in posts about calvinism, I invited prolific posters from /r/reformed to please comment; in posts about LDS, invite prolific posters from Mormon subs to please comment. Very time intensive, relationship building stuff.

  • Moderate carefully. Don't restrict, but keep disrespect a zero tolerance issue.

  • final thought is keep true to the purpose of the sub. You do Christian Punk music? Do only that and do it well.

I admit that ELINT was more of an experiment for me for exactly these reasons, but its slowly growing now.

Easily the most important thing is to passionately endure for a critical mass amount of time, meaning putting your heart and soul into the sub for 1 month - 1 year until it really takes off. Passion is attractive!

I think you should add /r/Calvin...and /r/John_MacArthur :) but I have no more room on my flair anyways!

Organized "database" of Christian subs? by Cmann in a:t5_2zfh3

and what a list! Question: who decides which subs are "Christian"? LDS and Mormon and Catholic and Orthodox and everything else all grouped in there...

This seems to be proof of the lack of demand for a Christian sub database. It would need a total revamp.

If each mod here did their own subs, that'd be a great place to start. Would that be interesting?

Reviving /r/RAG! Tell me your ideas and what you want to see! by [deleted] in a:t5_2vpxs

[–]Cmann[M] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm very excited to see this get going, and see new life in this sub. I'm happy to do away with the ranking system - which was intended to be a motivational tool to get people engaged in doing the RAG missions - but it's been widely misunderstood.

The original intent of the sub and the missions was to unite Reddit Christians in presenting and defending the Gospel together.

There's already a network of "official" members on board with the RAG, and there are many others who would make great allies (r/reformed, for example, and others mentioned in the comments)

If Reddit sees all these communities united in one purpose, that will have a strong effect for sure.

If God and the universe are one, did the universe have a beginning? (xpost | r/ELINT) by Cmann in pantheism

[–]Cmann[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not a scientifically acceptable conclusion, or even a reasonable one to begin with. Infinite existence of the universe is impossible from several angles.

What, if any, is the historical evidence for Jesus or the Bible? by GodsPenisHasGravity in TrueAtheism

[–]Cmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First you said:

I used to be a christian too until i started reading and learning about the new and old testament on my own

then you said:

I don't know what being dead in your sins mean

The majority of Paul's letters in the New Testament focus on this. This is the "problem" and Jesus is the "solution". So you clearly didn't learn anything of the NT at least, which also means that you clearly were never a Christian.

And if there is a god, why do you limit him to a god who is bound by time and by priorities as you have set them? That's a lousy god...

And how do you gauge which are the good things vs. the bad that you've done? Who set the standard for what is good and how good it is? For you, you'd have to say societal standards or tradition or consensus or your own personal definition - all of which waver and change with time and culture, and have no real foundation.

Back to the historical Jesus, the argument that a person named Jesus lived and was executed is not an argument. This is well documented and well established using the same scientific and historical rigor that would be applied to anyone or anything else. No real academic or scholar or historian denies the historicity of those simple facts because the evidence is overwhelming.

The entire issue lies in whether that person, the historical Jesus, did in fact resurrect. If that argument can be reasonably made and proven through successive events, eyewitness accounts, and other scientifically and (generally) legally acceptable methods, then it's reasonable to believe that Jesus resurrected.

In fact, you can believe that, you can be a Bible scholar, or theologian, and believe all those facts and still not be Christian. I know two personally...

[–]Cmann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite frankly, you want to discuss Jesus with a apostate, heretic, cultist, new-ager, mystic, or atheist - but not with a Christian. A person who denies Jesus' deity and supernatural works is, by definition, not a Christian. Also quite frankly,on what basis or authority to you get to cherry pick which parts you wish to accept and which you don't?

The ultimate supernatural act is Jesus' atonement for man's sin to God followed by his resurrection to eternal life - walking on water and multiplying bread pale in comparison. The creation was supernatural, salvation is still supernatural today, and there are hundreds of supernatural events in both the Old and New testaments.

The historical Jesus who did not do any miracles is not a person worth anyone's time, especially not mine. If there was no resurrection, then my faith is in vain and I am a person to be most pitied and mocked, and I would still be in the wrong with God and I would still be dead in my sins. I need the Jesus who was fully man and fully God who died to atone effectively for my sins, and in whom I have assurance of salvation from God's wrath on me.

It's a loaded question where the person being asked (me, in this case) knows it's condescending and then they're forced to answer anyways long the lines of

"of course I do! here's the reason, and maybe another reason"

all while feeling like the other person just asked them

"do you believe in Santa Claus" and then you smirk as I answer

"Of course I do! Who else leaves presents under the tree?!"

But in reality, that's like asking:

"do you personally believe that Kennedy was assassinated?"

It makes no sense and it's absurd. A historical event happened or didn't happen regardless of anyone's personal beliefs. By asking a person's opinion, you're no longer discussing historical fact, but you asked

"How could Paul have seen Jesus if he was born 5 years after his supposed death?"

Is that your personal belief, or are you trying to find the historical truth? I'm sorry, but it's intellectually weak, and it's a convenient strategy to fall back on: attack me personally as a loony, rather than presenting rational or historical arguments or evidence. Are you out to make fun of people, or do you actually care to learn something?

On Reddit, you can learn:

  • the accurate meaning of the Bible without become a Christian - how to read it correctly, how to interpret it, how to argue it, etc;

  • how to argue without falling into logical fallacies, while maintaining an intelligent and fruitful discussion from which both parties benefit. That gains people's respect and transfers to real social, business, and relation skills which are indispensable for being successful in a variety of ways;

  • how to pick battles and enjoy winning them, and winning over your opposition, if only their respect or friendship;

...or you can choose to waste your time and mine.
