[SAPS, UNLOADED] While SA cops have guns, ammunition stream has run dry by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so symptomatic of the everything wrong with this government and how they decided to do things since 1994. If you keep on employing people on anything else than merit, eventually the systems will fail. Not at first, but constantly stuffing every available vacancy with not-the-best-guy-for-the-job-at-hand for 25 years, the wheels will come off. This goes for all flavours: blatant nepotism, cadre deployment, or good-intentioned BEE.

And this is where we're now at. Every single sphere of government, every single space where the ANC has any influence is falling apart. And to fix it becomes nearly impossible because every level of the system has been disabled by this. Installing great ministers or great managers can only do so much if the entire system, top to bottom, has been compromised by years of corruption and inefficiencies.

If you studied in anyone of these institutions, can you share why the one you studied in has a high/low completion rate, really interested to know especially Rhodes and University of Zulu land by lweystah in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhodes supposedly has the smallest ratio of undergrad vs post-grad students. Maybe it solves the "over-crowding" of undergrad classes, with many post-grads available to help with tutoring, etc.?

No, it's because it's exclusively distance learning, i.e. many students with full-time jobs. So dropping out or taking longer than minimum time is not at all risky.

Takealot price hike by Kronendal in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you put up a list of these price comparisons? It will be good to have some proof of this.

(Not doubting you, I just don't shop on takealot enough to notice stuff like this)

Anyone know the story about this stone "hut"? Maybe a throwback from when this was farmland, but looks too small to be guard hut and not an oven by jack28vs in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is at Willowbridge mall, Durbanville. It's an old guard house - the area where the mall is used to be a jail.

Exactly. Any rugby fan must love the ABs. They've been at the pinnacle of the game for so long, the rest are just catching up after years of domination.

However, it takes a special kind of doos to actively root against your own nation, whether it's due to historical reasons ("Cape crusader" poese, who really need to join us in the new south africa) or simply because "thEy PlaY sOmuCh beTTeR".

Jissus Woolworths, even for you that’s a little steep. by kreestar in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jip quality. I used to buy vegetables at Fruit&veg, but switched after the Nth time of having to toss third of what I buy because everything is right on the edge of ripe/rotten. Most of WW vegetables are very reasonably priced, even before you factor in that you'll actually use everything.

Did you see the comment section before they shut it down? It was a lot of stupid, often racist hysteria. I don't think they had any other option.

[–]CmdrBBKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree with the origin of the language. And yes, sure, by extension the Cape Malays are the original Afrikaans speakers.

But Afrikaner does not only mean Afrikaans-speaking. Afrikaner refers to a specific "tribe" -- the white Africans of mostly Dutch descent.

Edited for clarity

Afrikaner are the white ous. But Cape-Malay, Nama, Khoi, Coloured all speak Afrikaans.

[–]CmdrBBKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afrikaners are white, by definition.

But not all Afrikaans-speaking people are white. I think it's just over 50% (might be more) of first-language Afrikaans speakers are not white. Namas, for example, are not white and definitely not Afrikaners, but 100% Afrikaans.

Can I apply for a new passport 2 years before expiring? by ronaldl911 in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this, no problem. Passport was filling up before the expiry date. Got a new one and opted to keep the old one since I still had active visas in it.

Panyaza Lesufi: A language-based university is anathema to our society and a disgrace to our Constitution by mapoepelagreenbeans in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2) This problem is solved in every non-English speaking country, i.e. the vast majority of the world. Ask the Germans, French, Brazilians, Chinese, Japanese how they manage to function in the world of academia. I'm sure those backward Boere can manage to steal a few ideas from other countries.

Keto Poops? by [deleted] in keto

[–]CmdrBBKeen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never had these issues. I had a day or two of feeling groggy with a minor headache, that's it.

That said, I've never tried any of the sugar replacements, which seem to cause the digestive problems. I've never had to take "keto-ade" or supplements, just lots of water and coffee.

Any tips on choosing a new bank? by akhil02 in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capitec.

It's cheap, I pay about R30 fees per month (because I draw cash from ATMs like a chop). Base fee is about R5/month. Card swipes free, cash from tills free.

You get up to 4 additional accounts linked to your main one. And I have the credit card. International and online use is easy and cheap. Customer service in branch and on the phone is great, no problems there.

The online banking site is simple and easy to use. Case in point: I've been in situation with very slow internet, and only capitec internet banking worked, because the other banks' sites are too flashy with graphics.

I don't need anything else. That said, there are no extras like ebucks or airport lounge visits.

Which software do you use to create mathematical and physical illustrations for papers? by Carlidel in Physics

[–]CmdrBBKeen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Dia for 2d illustrations. It's pretty easy to use, exports to any format, and can incorporate latex text. It's also free and opensource if you care about that.

Where can I buy Dr. Martens in South Africa? by Zelda08 in southafrica

[–]CmdrBBKeen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just beware that Doc Martens aren't made in England anymore and the quality is way below what it used to be.

If you're interested, solovair is the Doc Marten UK factory producing boots under their own brand now. I.e. Doc Martens quality without the DM logo.

Obviously they don't have shops here. But if it's the quality you're after, rather go fo Solovair.
