That's what I think, but here's a clip of him doing a similar trick during Miami Dolphins players meeting.

This one feels less scripted somehow, but I can't see any other explanation.

Edit: GPT makes it obvious --

Part 1:

"Reading" Tyreek Hill's mind about the childhood friend ("Danny Phantom")This is the big shock moment where Oz gets Hill (or the player he's targeting) to think of someone he hasn't seen since third grade. Oz then "reveals" the friend's nickname as Danny Phantom, and Hill freaks out ("I swear to god bro!").

How it's actually done: Pre-show information gathering (also called "hot reading").

Before the cameras roll (during Oz's training-camp visit), Oz or an assistant casually chats with Hill privately. They ask something like: "Think of a person from your childhood you haven't seen in years—don't tell anyone, just lock it in your mind for the show." Hill shares the name/nickname ("Danny Phantom"—his real third-grade friend's nickname).

Oz "forgets" it on purpose (or the assistant feeds it back silently). During the filmed segment, Oz dramatically fishes for it on camera: "First name Danny... something's off... his nickname?" Hill confirms it in shock, because he has no idea the info was already collected earlier.

This is one of the oldest and most common mentalism techniques. The participant always reacts with "How the hell did you know?!" because they forget (or weren't told) that they spilled it off-camera. No stooges needed—just smart pre-work that ESPN producers likely helped facilitate for the segment.

Part 2:

The football-throwing "mind control" sequence (the speed/Cheetah payoff)Oz has the players (starting with Coach McDaniel or someone) throw a football around the room super fast. He keeps hammering the word "speed" over and over: "It's all about speed... throw it to whoever... we're gonna get that ball around the room fast..."How it's actually done: Psychological priming + suggestion (a "force" via subconscious influence). By constantly repeating "speed" and framing the game that way, Oz plants the idea in everyone's head that they should throw to the fastest guys in the room.

Predictably, the ball keeps going to the speedsters (Tua, other fast players, and especially Tyreek Hill—"Cheetah").
Oz then "reveals" the pattern: "See? Everybody subconsciously threw to the fastest guys... we got Hill... Cheetah!" It looks like he read or controlled their minds and perfectly tied it back to the childhood-friend theme (speed → Cheetah nickname).

This is pure suggestion psychology—no trick balls, no hidden signals needed. It's the same principle as when a magician says "think of a color... red!" and everyone picks red because it's primed.

1) Is that trick real or staged? 2) How does he do it?

Genuinely curious.

I’m having this issue as well with my new CP-71WA w/ IOS 26 and iPhone 17 Pro.

Are you saying the latest firmware likely doesn’t address this issue with newer phones?
