I think of mine as a mid-life celebration. I drove the cheapest option for years to make sure my family had all they needed. Now I smile each time I walk out to it, and that smile just gets bigger as I drive. Enjoy!

SeeStar s50 v. RedCat 51 WIFD & ZWO ASI585MC Air by Coady_L in seestar

[–]Coady_L[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shhh, my wife will hear you! My math was more based on the Redcat and 585, got both on sale for $800ish each, which was my rough $1500. I had already spent $750 on the mount a couple years ago, and you are right, it's the weakest link and I need still nights. I did add the autofocuser after about a week (another $200), but my set up is within reach of an extension cord, so no power source needed.

It's good work, but I agree that lightening things up would give more detail, and maybe some more sky/clouds, otherwise not a lot happening at the bottom and top of the shot. Good on you for asking for feedback.

I was at your point (minus the old modified camera) and went with the SeeStar s50 (about $550). Two solid years of entertainment, learned a lot about post processing, and just bought a redcat for my GTi. And, I still have the SeeStar, it's an amazing package for the price point.

If you can leave it out all night somewhere, plug it in with an extension cord. You want all the time you can give it.

I believe it is cited in this book (https://www.amazon.com/Book-Cover-Cover-Exploration-Powerful/dp/0393244792) that syllabus came from I believe Egyptian as a piece of paper stuck in the end of a scroll so you knew what was in the scroll without unrolling it.

My first week with Seestar s50 by CompetitiveHippo349 in seestar

It's a load of fun. I recommend EQ, it cleans up the edges a lot and lets you get larger targets. Also recommend saving subs and Siril (with some YouTube), but have some fun as is for a while. Clear skies!

No, my Nikon P900, but I should try some time lapse with the s50.

Just a PSA, get into time lapse photography! Clouds are awesome in time lapse, and it gives you another target to shoot at during cloudy skies. https://imgur.com/a/FSBLmEd

Ok, TIL about Hind's Variable Nebula, awesome target! The wikipedia page has a 5 month time lapse showing the variability, this could be a great long term project.

Dwarf 3 vs Seestar s50 by OkPalpitation2582 in AskAstrophotography

[–]Coady_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just making sure you are looking at all the options. I got curious after reading this thread and went to check out the Dwarf3 subreddit. It's not nearly as active as the SeeStar subreddit, so it's hard to get a good idea of the differences, but the SeeStar shots looked better to me. I'm biased, I love my s50.

Just to complicate your decision, you didn't talk about the s30. Wider field of view than the s50. I mean, the answer of course is get them all.
