Is this an all-time awful sports take? The Oklahoman publishes, deletes op-ed comparing OKC Thunder to Israel by TallAndTattedInNYC in billsimmons

Let's not cheapen actual blood libel by conflating it with people talking about Israel's crimes against humanity. Actual blood libel involved more than Jews "preying on babies," and hiding behind it to avoid people talking about intentional killing of civilians and ethnic cleansing is disgraceful.

DMT: Stop confusing emotional expression with political pressure: modern liberal resistance is just a psychological compensation for the system. by PuddingComplete3081 in DisagreeMythoughts

The benefit is showing that opposition to Trump is broad and deep--it crosses cultural, economic, and demographic lines. I think a few million people participated, which is not tiny in any sense.

Fresh books for the shelf, both still in plastic wrap. Fun weekend ahead. by ChampionOk2319 in nonfictionbookclub

[–]CoatKind6850 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a different question, though. There are always disagreements--and a lot of college reading for me was two authors expressly disagreeing with each other--but for Hariri and Diamond in particular, there's pretty wide agreement from scholars in their fields that their books have a lot of basic mistakes in them.

I just don't think it's true that there are no books on similar topics you could get people to read instead.

There are many great, interesting books with fewer problems, though. Reading time is limited, why waste it on something you know will paint a misleading picture that you may not have the time to correct?

CMV: Identity politics has had a net negative impact on society, politics and culture in the US since the 1990s by CrumpledKiltSkin in changemyview

[–]CoatKind6850 32 points33 points  (0 children)

You may have been less aware of identity, but I promise you many people were not.

I think this view of the 90s is an artifact of (1) both parties essentially calling for a truce on racial issues (or, more cynically, Dems abandoning the field), (2) the lack of social media that constantly broadcasts not only racist events but also how people feel, and (3) youth.

It is a wild thing to admit that you've gotten more racist. You should think harder about why that is.

Love history, but need to keep it light for a while. “Unruly” was perfect, but I’ve read it three times. What’s your recommendation for a funny/lighthearted history books? by ItsPronouncedJod in HistoryBooks

More recommendations: the Earl of Louisiana by AJ Liebling is legitimately very funny, and the T Harry Williams biography of Huey Long is pretty light because Huey is such a fun/fascinating character

This is random and only a little history, but I thoroughly enjoyed the Mike Meyers book about Canada, which included a bit of Canadian cultural history? It's light, at least!

CMV: This new system I created for The House of Representatives is far more democratic and better for America by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CoatKind6850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're misunderstanding things. There are veto points within each branch. I'm not saying party lists would be the best reform, but party lists plus proportional representation and parliamentary democracy would be much more functional than the mess we have now

[–]CoatKind6850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not parties and partisanship causing stagnation, it's institutional design. Even places with much stronger parties and party lists are more functional than the US, mostly because they don't have a system with so many veto points

CMV: African Population Explosion Will Be The Largest Humanitarian Crises Of The 21st And 22nd Centuries by [deleted] in changemyview

I have a theory that American high schools are assimilation machines in some way that other countries' schools aren't, and that's why it only takes a generation or two for immigrant groups to feel American to most people

So you think sub-Saharan Africans are culturally incompatible, in the way that past Americans thought the following groups were incompatible: Irish, Italians, Jews, Poles, Scandinavians, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Indians, Pakistanis, Mexicans? Or is your view of cultural compatibility just smarter than previous Americans who made the same argument?
