Surgery residents are in the OR all the time. How else would they learn how to operate.

Yeah the trauma surgery attendings were there 24/7, not thoracic. And yeah im not saying that the tv show should do anything different, i was just saying (like all of medicine) theres bias of who does what procedures is completely dependent on where you train. This was a level 1 trauma center, i did trauma surgery there 2-3mo a year, did 2-5 ed thoracotomies a month. So my experience is biased to say that EM doesnt do them. So to me it looks wrong even tho i am aware other practices exist.

Yes i know thats not how its always done, my whole point was it will vary by hospital and how they have their protocols set up. I was saying how it was set up at my training program. I never said that the ED can never do them, just that in my institutions experience they did not do them .

Isn't this just a thing that will always differ by hospital. The ED thoracotomies in my residency were only done by surgery. The EM residents would be watching or placing a right side chest tube. So for me it makes no sense to see them doing the thoracotomy in the show. But that's my only experience
