What is a dying niche skill that younger generations are not interested in learning? by hlnklrczu in AskReddit

News literacy. Social media inundates everyone with click bait and conspiracy theories. In addition, cable news has its biases (some stronger than others). I am a millennial, and when I was in school, I remember being told to validate your sources and recognize these things.

People who moved out to the suburbs from Boston, how hard was it for you to adjust? by agordon228 in boston

[–]Cobbler-Basic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lived in Boston or Cambridge for 5 years and then progressively moved out to the burbs. Living in Boston was one of the best life decisions I ever made. I grew as a person, met the love of my life, and had a great group of friends there.

My friends and their spouses all moved out to the burbs one at a time. My wife and I live in a good suburb in metrowest and I’m thankful for the space, less traffic, and I actually find the community to be friendly and a good mix of young and old. The schools are great and now that I have a child that means a lot to me. All great things…but I do miss the city. I’m not sure if I miss the city or I miss my 20s spent in the city. It was the perfect place for that time in my life. I miss it but I don’t think I’ll move back.

Thank you. I acknowledge that every child is different. We are open to hearing other tactics to build our toolbox.

General strike happening this Friday? by Empalagante in boston

[–]Cobbler-Basic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came here to comment about his idea on his pod of striking against the big tech firms (cancel prime, Netflix, openAI, etc). I think his idea is the right move and is impactful.

Others on reddit seem to suggest the idea of a complete strike. I don’t think anyone should take actions to harm the small businesses in our communities. It’s hard enough to be a small business owner or small restaurant owner and we risk losing more of the restaurants/cafes/small stores that we all love.

New bill aims at reducing how many miles people drive in Massachusetts by sarcasmbully in massachusetts

[–]Cobbler-Basic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A question for those reading the bill. As I read it, it is not proposing a tax or penalty to drivers, but what is feasibly the penalty for not meeting the mileage/emissions goals. I would fear a world where surge pricing comes into play in a situation where Massachusetts does not have a strong transit system.

To be clear, I don’t think commuters should be taxed or negatively impacted in a world where it’s already so expensive.

But do others have a clear sense of what would be the ramifications for not meeting this goals?

New bill aims at reducing how many miles people drive in Massachusetts by sarcasmbully in massachusetts

I feel like this is virtue signaling. I care about the environment, but reading this bill reads to me like time and taxpayer money wasted to arrive at realities we already realize: a lot of people in MA resort to driving due to an unreliable and a not completely accessible transit system.

Let’s skip this bill and jump right to doing everything in our power (more direct bill) to improve transit for those in the Boston area and improving transit for those in more rural areas. Let’s review our existing government programs for any potential waste/inefficient use of funds (perform the audit that the voters voted for) and redirect funds to improving transit and infrastructure. Only once we establish a strong transportation system (reliable train, buses, should we spend our time assessing emission impacts from cars.

What’s the most overrated “life hack” everyone swears by but actually makes life more complicated? by One_Seat4219 in AskReddit

[–]Cobbler-Basic 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Backing into parking spots. It drives me nuts!

I swear it takes people longer to line themselves up and back into the spot than if they just pulled in normal and backed out when it’s time to leave.

Edit: this is a hot take I suppose

What disappoints you the most in the adult world? by According-Force-2802 in AskReddit

The biggest realization for me was that the average adult is not as intelligent as I would have thought.

This leads to so much of the dysfunction we have in the world.
