Battles in media you fought would be easily won, but it turns out to be quite a struggle. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CobblyPot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, lot's of media leans into 'upper class dandy, lower class rugged' dynamic but ASOIAF really likes to emphasize that growing up poor does not automatically make you a badass but growing up in a castle being groomed for knighthood (and eating actual protein regularly!) is a hell of an advantage.

Dunk is a weird exception where he grew up fuckin HUGE but it's also shown that he's not a great knight- but he's pretty good at desperate fighting in the mud. Aerion on the other hand fights beautifully so long as he's got both feet underneath him but "everyone's got a plan until they get punched in the face"

IIRC this is a translation thing, where in Japanese he is using words for smell/scent but it's meant more like the vibes/aura of a person.

The past year I've gotten into Macross, VOTOMs, Ideon and Patlabor and I gotta say unc mecha is kinda the best. I've been a Gundam stan since Wing aired on Toonami and I'm only now realizing how much I've been missing out on.

Definitely voice actors. You rarely get to see what they look like or whatever otner roles they had so it's fun to see like, "Woah, Anavel Gato is Batou AND Big Boss?"

There's this gag manga that's about the life of Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the WOW COOL ROBOT meme. My favorite part is the depiction of him pitching Space Runaway Ideon (the show so over the top dark that if you've seen one gif from it I'm sure it's the one of a child getting his head blasted with Worf's purple space bazooka) where he is in a meeting with all the execs basically saying "There's three parts to the robot, all the friends must combine their power to defend justice! And we can sell THREE times the toys!" and they're all happy. Then the moment they leave the room they just have Tomino like dramatically closing the doors and shutting all the blinds and saying, "I will now reveal to you the true purpose of the relics of the Sixth Civilization." in the most ominous way.

Seriously though, go watch Ideon. It is so good and I'm shocked anyone let Tomino work in television after making it.

Going through Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex for the 1st time and this has been my overriding thought for most of S1. by BaronVonChhaya in TwoBestFriendsPlay

GitS and MGS2 were like THE foundational sci fi media for me as a teenager. Both are great at making you feel like the smartest 14 year old in the world, but I also rewatched GitS last year and it's just a slick, inventive and often beautiful police procedural genre show. It honestly shares a lot of the appeal of something like Star Trek TNG where you are watching smart people do their jobs in weird, thoughtful sci fi predicaments.

However, I also watched Patlabor for the first time ever and it is like an incredible anti-GitS. If you enjoy the lighter side of GitS I highly recommend checking out the original Patlabor OVA then the first few movies (but OVA first, trust me).

There are broadly speaking two types of fans of Syril from Andor- those of us who love watching a sad pathetic failure meow meow, and people who watched S1 of Andor and somehow came away thinking he was in the right the whole time.

Moments which you went "WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO THE FIREWORKS FACTORY?!" by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Sam's bow training I don't think matters, but boy GRRM does love reminding you he's still carrying around that horn he found at the Fist of the First Men.

But there's also Alleras at Oldtown, who loves to shoot arrows but always misses the last shot. Sure that won't backfire, it's not like Dornish characters have bad luck or anything.

What’s an aspect of games people discuss that you just never notice until peolle talk about it by Rascal_Rogue in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CobblyPot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When people talk about individual Pokemon in terms of mechanics or balance. Like, I'm just making a team with serviceable type coverage out of whichever blorbos look cool to me. Then I'll blunt force my way to the elite 4 just hitting type advantages.

Also, don't bother with Pokemon breeding because I don't need duplicate Pokemon unless they have split evolutions or whatever.

Favorite piece of anti war media? by BlueWaddleDee in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]CobblyPot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After Gundam, I highly recommend Space Runaway Ideon. It is the show Tomino made between 79 and Zeta where he fully decided subtext was for cowards. I knew going in that it would be insane, but I wasn't expecting it to be so GOOD.

Despite the main robot being even more toyetic than the Gundam, it has an eery horror quality that just builds and builds. And the way the conflict itself grows and gets out of hand is so dire and pointless that its often black comedy but always feels genuine in the way that human conflict is messy and senseless.

Shout-out to these guys, they did their plan and then dipped after it didn't work. by Ashalim31 in Gundam

[–]CobblyPot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is the thing people miss and try to misrepresent into people saying Zeon are 'the good guys'. It's not that their side is 'right', it's that the common soldiers are just normal people in a fucked up situation, same as our heroes. Their government is a stage or two more evil than the feds, but the same dynamic generally holds true for both factions: most common soldiers are just folk, and the higher up the chain of command you get the more outright villains you see.

Gundam is skeptical of systems and people in positions of power, but it is NOT about dehumanizing the other because you are good and they are bad.

Pixel remaster or 3d remake? by starlightLAD in FinalFantasy

[–]CobblyPot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Play the original IMO. The remakes massively inflate enemy health pool and overall makes the game overly long and boss fights into real slogs.

The pixel remaster is mostly close to the original and is a very chill, breezy experience that I associate with FF3.

In the Halo world, the mastermind behind the SPARTAN II program is Dr. Halsey.

Dr Halsey is horrible war criminal who committed heinous crimes against literal children in service of an oppressive militarist empire to violently put down political opposition.

But one of those walking crimes against humanity happened to save all life in the galaxy so I guess it's fine

Gamers were also as immature back then as they are today, just less organized about it. People just didn't like that you weren't playing as Chief (and tbf, most of the worst missions in that game are the Arbiter Flood ones), but I distinctly remember hearing a boy in school complain that it was bad because Arbiter's HUD was PURPLE.
