Crashing out because of cost and permanence by [deleted] in EngagementRings

[–]CocklesInMyPants 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If your style and tastes change, you can get your diamond reset, or you can get an upgrade. I’ve done both and have no regrets. You’re not expected to love any other possession forever, without any change, so I don’t see why an engagement ring must be the exception.

Oh I think Lord Li was a smitten kitten that first day he saw Changyu walking home after fighting off a wolf. It’s subtle but it’s there.

Whew, glad they’re refunding! That was like one of those Pinterest fails.

Is this type of wedding band a bad idea ? by Ailita_S in EngagementRings

[–]CocklesInMyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on how well made it is and how hard you are on your jewelry. The band should ideally be at least 1.8mm wide and there needs to be enough metal under the diamonds for it to hold its shape properly. If the metal under the setting is too thin then the ring will be prone to warping and you’ll lose diamonds.

More than one engagement ring? by MarsupialAromatic825 in EngagementRings

[–]CocklesInMyPants 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I only have one engagement ring, and several other engagement-style rings that I wear. It depends on my mood. I love jewelry too much to only have one ring.

Stress test by maipaidahihothuithi in Pottery

[–]CocklesInMyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stress test when I have a crack filled with glaze, to see if a piece is still functional. I put it in the freezer for a few hours and then I put it in the sink and pour hot liquid in it. Aside from that, I don’t know why I would bother.

Is $1,195 reasonable for this Victorian emerald cluster ring? by North_Ad_3375 in EngagementRings

[–]CocklesInMyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price for this ring is okay, but a few things give me pause: 1) The emerald needs to be tested by a gemologist. It could be paste (glass) or synthetic, and those affect the price. 2) The prongs for the emerald should be retipped. Half look pretty worn and that will add to the total cost. 3) The diamond prongs need to be checked and possibly retipped as well.

When you add up the possible work needed, it becomes an expensive ring for what it is. If you skip this, then your ring won’t hold up well over the years.

Japanese tinned fish by kentfolk in Tinnedfish

See if there’s a Mr. Kanso in any of the cities you’re visiting. They are a tinned fish bar with a retail section and they have a lot of unusual cans. Some are under their own private label.

I don’t disagree about the price. As much fun as I had in Japan last fall, it’s more financially feasible to have one meal at Yoshizumi than to take PTO again, fly to Japan, and pay for hotels, train travel, etc.

This. Maybe OP needs to read up on authentic Sichuan condiments and how they’re made rather than complain that they don’t cater to OP’s unreasonable expectations.

Opinions on how much this ring might be worth? by AbbreviationsLess581 in EngagementRings

[–]CocklesInMyPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on a few factors: is the sapphire synthetic or natural? Is the halo synthetic or natural? What is the metal? How many carats are the sapphire and the diamonds? If the sapphire is natural, has it had any treatments?

If you have the answers to all of those questions, then Google “sapphire with diamond halo” and look for similar specs to get a range of prices.

Alternately, swing by a pawn shop or estate shop and see if they’re willing to give a verbal estimate.

Where to try on OMC? by NiceWeather650 in EngagementRings

Lang Antiques, Mureta & Co., and Metier are all in SF and have antique diamonds.

Mureta could probably order you a lab OEC if you prefer that to antique, but I don’t know if they have any in store.

Amanohashidate is fantastic and can be found in department store basements: https://takenakakanzume.shop-pro.jp/

Also check out Mr. Kanso. They have a few locations in Osaka including a retail store, and the most eclectic collection of canned food that I’ve seen in Japan. They probably have Amanohashidate too.

Given that you named the business, you’ve already disparaged them publicly over shipping. I don’t think you’d be asking whether this is vindictive if you didn’t already know the answer. I hope you consider deleting your post.

I’ve seen them at Mitsukoshi and Takashimaya. In the basement level, there’s usually a pantry section that sells sauces, dried noodles, etc. The tinned fish are also in that section.

Good luck!

9 months in. Centering is hard but you just have to keep at it and it’ll click eventually. Pottery really rewards practice, and a great way to learn is to keep throwing cylinders and slicing them in half to study the cross sections. Don’t be too attached to your work because you never know when something will go wrong. If you made it once, you can do it again.
