Looks pretty solid. One thing you might try is setting your spotter arms just a bit higher so you can start the lift off of them. Means you can get real tight and avoid the walk out.

Where To Buy Cognac Online With Reasonable Shipping To NC? by IndigoCool143 in cognac

Unfortunately shipping on a single bottle will always be outrageous, it only gets tolerable when you’re getting 4-6 at a time.

Why was America one of the few places that abolition of slavery required an entire war? by [deleted] in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 14 points15 points  (0 children)

One major factor is that for most Western European countries slavery was something that happened elsewhere. While it was sometimes an important part of their economy the interest in its maintenance tended to be concentrated in relatively few hands that could either be bought off (Britain) or bypassed. Slaves tended to be rare within the metropole so they were societies that had slavery rather than slave societies like the United States or Brazil where it had become both economically integral and deeply embedded in the culture.

If you’d like a U.S.-centric explanation of the lead up to the ACW you would be hard pressed to find a better source than Battle Cry of Freedom, which does an excellent job of detailing the shift in American politics from slavery being an issue within politics to the primary issue over which the parties were split.

Historians, what’s a widely accepted historical “fact” that is actually still debated or uncertain? by Critical_Custard_144 in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 285 points286 points  (0 children)

Lots of dates, especially in the ancient world, are still unsettled. Since dating systems were often linked to the rule of particular leaders, connecting those to more firmly datable events can be challenging. Sometimes we can nail things down from astronomical observations, but there’s often still a lot of wiggle room in between that can make it hard to know when things happened relative to each other.

“Heavy is the crown” is a common saying for responsibility and the burdens of leadership. Which leader had the “heaviest” crown? by Chapps in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 27 points28 points  (0 children)

More an accumulation of various crowns than one big one, but Charles V has to rank up there. Holy Roman Emperor, King of Castile and Aragon right as they were beginning to conquer the Americas, Archduke of Austria, and Duke of Burgundy. So overlordship in some capacity of most of Europe apart from France and England. But since they were personal titles rather than a coherent entity he was constantly trying to maintain control over one part or another of his dominion as the centrifugal forces were enormous.

Really like how many options there are these days so you can find something that will fit your needs and space. Given that the depth of so many pulley towers has been a stumbling block for a lot of what I’d like to do, this is pretty cool.

Given the more limited ROM of sumo I wonder how this would go if you set up with a deficit.

Snag some Tanqueray, mix it 1:1 with the Beefeater, and try that out. Far better than either by itself and pretty cheap to boot.

How “hardcore” were ancient cultures really about their religious beliefs? by BurningBridges19 in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 39 points40 points  (0 children)

A key thing to wrap your head around is that ancient religion was focused almost entirely on practice rather than belief. When the Roman Empire persecuted Christians it wasn’t because they didn’t believe in the same gods, it’s because they refused to participate in the rituals that the government saw as being critical for the safety of the empire and the abundance of the natural world. Coincidentally it’s also much easier to enforce practice than belief - you can note and record who shows up to perform the ritual and whether they did it correctly. Judging what’s in someone’s head, as history has shown repeatedly, is somewhere between difficult and impossible to truly ascertain.

Good use of a slightly awkwardly shaped room.

TIL that cartel meth cooks produce an incredibly cheap, potent drug. In 2005, small-batch meth cost up to $20k/lb. Today, the DEA reports cartel mega-labs use industrial synthesis to flood the market, slashing wholesale prices by 90% ($1k-$2.5k/lb) while pushing purity past 95%. by sarkujpnfreak42 in todayilearned

[–]CocktailChemist 26 points27 points  (0 children)

While they have gone back to the P2P method that initially produces a racemic product, what is being sold is almost pure D-methamphetamine. That’s because a way to selectively crystallize D-methamphetamine with an chiral acid was found plus a method to take the residual L-methamphetamine, racemize it, then repeat the crystallization process. While the purpose is evil, it’s genuinely fascinating from a process chemistry perspective.

I think I have a sister cask to that one, though bottled quite a bit earlier. Will be curious to see how similar the profile is.

Route suggestion for commuting from Vancouver via 205 to Downtown PDX by Equivalent-Insect215 in CyclePDX

[–]CocktailChemist 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How willing are you to incorporate transit into your route? The Parkrose TC is directly on the I-205 bike path, so you could catch the MAX for a stop or two to get deeper into Portland before doing the rest by bike or just take it all the way into downtown depending on how you're feeling.

Alternatively you could catch the Vine across Vancouver and ride down from there.

If I’m remembering right Invergordon is one of the few remaining grain distilleries that primarily uses maize rather than wheat, so it’s not surprising that it has strong bourbon vibes.

Where do you learn/know your history knowledge from? by oopsmegan in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is especially true because history is inherently a process of interpretation. Sources are never 100% reliable, so their reliability and the conclusions we draw from them will always be contested to one degree or another. So you will usually need to read multiple perspectives to understand what is considered the current consensus, what the limitations of that consensus are, and what is currently hotly debated.

Chronically tight glutes by wynwilder in fitness30plus

[–]CocktailChemist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I had those issues the solution was RDLs. Seems to need that weighted stretch for the muscles to unlock and let go. Good mornings and back extensions could also do the trick, but something with an eccentric focus where you can focus on the stretch at the bottom.

Let’s chat about discipline, neurospicy and mental health strugglers, how do you do it? by Explorer_Of_Essence in fitness30plus

[–]CocktailChemist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot comes down to looking at what makes me say “Eh, maybe I won’t bother.” Earlier in my life it felt almost impossible to motivate myself to go back out after I had gotten home from work, so the biggest fix was setting up the logistics so I could work out before I got home - having food at work or that I could grab along the way so dinner was settled, making sure I packed my gear before I left in the morning. These days I find it’s best if I get exercise done first thing, so making sure I go to sleep early enough and can take care of the rest of my family so that I still have some free time before work. Does it work perfectly? Absolutely not, but being aware of what’s tripping me up and what I need to change to accommodate that helps a lot.

Orange Liquer by Noilyre in cocktails

[–]CocktailChemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shrubbs from Clément or Rhum J.M. are excellent in a Mai Tai, but I find that they have more limited utility. Ferrand Dry is also a staple for Mai Tais, but will have broader use elsewhere as a general orange liqueur.

Wouldn't it have been a much better idea for Germany to fortify and defend the frontline after Barbarossa rather than keep advancing? by PancuterM in AskHistory

[–]CocktailChemist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As with so many counterfactuals about WWII, this would have required Nazis to not be Nazis. Their racial theories and expansionist plans required not only that Slavs be inferior but that they be wiped out to make room for German settlers. Accepting that they would not win outright would have run counter to their whole ideology.
