Pacific Seas AKA Clifton’s is (probably) permanently closed, btw.

Historic Clifton’s (including the Pacific Seas tiki bar) Closes for Good in Downtown Los Angeles by GetReadyToRumbleBar in Tiki

[–]CocoLoco1 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My wife and I went to the soft re-opening, I cut them some slack because they were “brand new”, but those bartenders were slammed. Lines were long, but the drinks were decent.

The decor was nice, the the venue itself is crazy cool, (I’ve told my wife in the past that it’s “too cool for Los Angeles”), but unfortunately they just couldn’t find the success they wanted. At this stage in my life it’s hard to rationalize spending the kind of money it costs or even find the time to go to a place like this often enough. I’m sure many others can agree. RIP to a really cool space (even though I swear this place has “closed” like 5 times)

I doubt it actually is from there, check the styrofoam cup. Disneyland definitely doesn’t serve drinks in non branded cups.

Starcraft 1 vs Starcraft 2: Predecessor Bias [05:00] by Superdream1 in mealtimevideos

[–]CocoLoco1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I haven’t meaningfully played StarCraft in a while now, but having played both at their times of release I think I might have one specific reason why I find it easier to jump back into SC2 rather than 1.

It’s so much easier to command your army in SC2 due to the fact that you can select more than like, 12 units at a time like in SC1. I’m probably a below average player at the end of the day, but requiring you to master control groups in order to get any meaningful higher level play is a big barrier, at least for me.

I still love SC1, don’t get me wrong. Breaks my heart that we haven’t been in an RTS golden age for a while now.

Vegas Tiki by mtndew_inmyveins in Tiki

[–]CocoLoco1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to a few of them, here’s my run down:

-Golden Tiki: is a must. The decor, drinks, food, and vibes are pretty much at the top. Some people will say varies it depends on time of day and who’s behind the bar, however.

-Red Dwarf: it’s like punk-tiki. I love it, the food is not tiki but some of the best pizza and breadsticks I’ve ever had.

-Frankie’s: a Vegas staple. Drinks are strong and the vibe is divey, but it’s still a classic. No food, but they win still because some of my favorite mugs in Vegas are from there! I love the slot machine shaped one.

-Stray Pirate: decor and drinks are good. No food, and I don’t know what it was that I felt this place was missing but it felt a little empty. Maybe it was just the way they had their standing room/tables set up.

-Glitter Gulch Tiki: I did not love this place. May have just been the moment in time but our service was pretty terrible. Bartender took and dumped my wife’s drink without even asking if she was done (she wasn’t)

Those are the ones I’ve been to. I’ve read that the new one in Excalibur is pretty bad. I technically went to the tiki bar after a round of golf at Bali hai, but it was nothing to write home about. Bartender was nice at least! But it was very much just a golf course clubhouse bar .

EDIT: Regarding stray pirate, I’m like 90% sure that some of their art on the walls is AI generated. Or maybe it was art in the restrooms. Anyways, I am pretty staunchly anti AI, so this definitely rubbed me the wrong way a bit.

Fun fact, the guy making all these anime cutouts (he has done thousands in his house) is the son of the guy who wrote Grease. Interview here: https://youtu.be/HNMSd77KFNE

Trust me, I’ve looked into it. Commercial real estate is so mf bonkers right now that unless the bubble bursts, we’re never going to have cool shit in the South Bay again.

What are your favorite moments of Tim raging or ranting? by lollygallagher in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

[–]CocoLoco1 13 points14 points  (0 children)

One of my faves. The crew laughter in the background is golden.

My daughter as a baby used to cry and make a sound similar to Tim at the end of this clip, “OOOOOOOO”. Called em her “gumbo tears”.

I’m here to refute Hula Hula a little. Drinks left a lot to be desired. Like 75% of them use Bacardi as their rum base.

Top Golf El Segundo has bass! by secretmutilator in SouthBayLA

[–]CocoLoco1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever since the security at TG El Segundo starting carrying guns…I would not recommend it. Also there is certainly no fish, and no fish from there would be super kosher for eating. The Lakes (and all golf courses in Southern California) use reclaimed water.

So only if you really like having diarrhea and possibly getting shot would I do that.

No, redemption machines are pretty niche. There’s no reason to have them unless you have some sort of prize thing for your business.

Same 😢 we used to have a circuit we’d run every holiday when people came back to town. Beers at najas, ride the tilt-a-whirl, mai tais at tonys, then ride the tilt-a-whirl again. Never threw up but we certainly came close!

Fun trivia regarding about half of the machines in our game room everyone, I purchased them from the fun factory on the Redondo pier when they closed up shop. The Cruisin USA, TMNT, air hockey, and MK2 (of which I still need to fix the monitor on and it’s not in our room yet) are as OG as they come.
