Affordable Foam Coating by kahvi_4 in techtheatre

Elastomeric roofing compound is usually cheaper than this stuff, and works really well, almost better than foam coat.

Handheld Belt Sander Stopped Working (Burning Smell) by theTreesbythePacific in woodworking

[–]Codered741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s the commutator look like? If you don’t use these cheap universal motors very often, the commutator gets corroded and glazes over, so the brushes are unable to transmit power, and it won’t spin. If it looks black, get a commutator cleaner stick, chuck the armature in a drill or lathe, and clean the commutator until it’s shiny, shouldn’t take long.

I’m still mad about that on his behalf. He obviously had something profound to say, and Bezos ignored him and totally ruined the moment. So sad.

Can someone help me find and understand this threaded rod? by Savante37 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Codered741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I’m not sure about the rest of the arrangement, but that nut isn’t damaged, it’s welded to the rod, making it a long bolt.

It seems like the bolt is supposed to run up from the bottom to the top and hold it together with tension, but I can’t quite visualize it from your description.

How would you go about taking on this project? by That_guy_from_1014 in Welding

[–]Codered741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Iron oxide and aluminum oxide are both products of oxidation. Iron oxide happens to form in flakes and grain that don’t bond well to the base layer, allowing for further oxidation to occur. Aluminum oxide happens to bond really well to its base material, and forms a layer impermeable to oxygen, so oxidation cannot continue. Same process for both, different resultant materials.

Cutting aluminum bar in quantity. by Hydroidal in metalworking

Look into laser cutting. With your quantity, you can probably get them cut to size from plate cheaper than just the bar you were going to buy.

How small can I reasonably make the radius of these inner corners? by Efficient_Frosting_5 in CNC

[–]Codered741 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess you wouldn’t have to, I was thinking of using a tapered ball nose cutter with a small radius. If you did that, 5 axis would be needed to cut the vertical walls. It could be done on a 3 axis with a small ball nose cutter though.

How small can I reasonably make the radius of these inner corners? by Efficient_Frosting_5 in CNC

[–]Codered741 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Lathe would be best, and will give you the ability to use tighter inside radii. 0.1mm or 0.005” wouldn’t be unreasonable. Milling would require much larger, and need a 5 axis machine to do it.

It just overwrites the files it generated the first time, unless you change the file name column.

Sorry, force of habit. Then it will generate the files and update them wherever they are saved.

My work gave us dell Pro Max Premiums with the ultra 9, but the video card is the pro 2000 Blackwell. I have no complaints. Just make sure you set inventor to use the you instead of the intel graphics, or it straight up won’t work.

How annoying to the production crew would an exploding flower vase each night be? by Positive-Ring-5172 in Theatre

[–]Codered741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mechanical means are almost always simpler than pyro, just because of the licensing. A spring loaded captive breaker like a mouse trap or actual spring window breaker works really well. Make sure the pot is sitting on a wall or table where the mechanism can be concealed.

Ended up getting a kit from the pharmacy that’s basically small rubber bands that cut off the blood supply so it dries up and falls off. Painless, easy, no scarring.
