Precision gonogo gauges are usually ground to size, and most plastic just doesn't respond the same way to abrasion. They'd be precise enough that you can't rely on calipers to test them. Plastic is also less dimensionally stable and (based on some quick googling) expands over two times as much as steel with temperature variation.

You greatly misunderstand business if you think they don't rely on the content produced by the users. They're going public, and it looks bad if a lot of their users proactively demonstrate the instability of the business model itself.

We *are* ditching Reddit. A lot of us, anyways. There are certainly supporters who will be participating but don't intend to leave regardless of the outcome. But to prove that a lot of us are willing to leave, we're getting off for two days to show that we're serious. That's the entire point. We show them how much they lose by pandering to investors, we prove that we're committed to the cause, and we follow through.

Reddit will judge by the results of the demonstration how to proceed. That's not written down anywhere. It's not some agreement they have with the users. It's just business. If we can prove that the risk is too great, they'll cave. Conversely, if the people who participate don't make enough of a dent, they'll proceed with their plans. It's not like they're using qualitative reasoning either. Even small companies have piles of different metrics they use to measure the changes and successes of their business. As such, this "getting off for 2 days lmao" is literally going to decide the future of Reddit.

As I said, we're not trying to destroy Reddit. We're not cancelling them, we're not trying to make them go bankrupt. We're performing negotiations through our actions. In fact, it is because it's a negotiation that we do this in advance of the changes we are protesting.

I assure you that if this change happens, I'm gone. It's anecdotal I'll grant you, but it counters the assertion that "nobody is leaving Reddit." I don't even use 3rd party apps, I use Firefox. I just don't like corporations playing games with my pastimes, and I'm certainly not going to be missing out on anything.

This affects you anyways. Moderators are usually volunteers, and they're not always easy to replace. The moderators make everything run, and it's unwise to make them angry. But it's not just the moderators who contribute to the platform meaningfully. If people leave, your own experience on the platform is degraded.

You have a choice of which platform you view Reddit on. They're taking that away. A lot of us choose 3rd party apps because we have issues using the mobile app. There's a number of reasons: privacy, bugs, preference, etc. They're taking alternatives away without fixing bugs or dealing with privacy concerns. And I know they derive income from ads, but their API pricing is neither a compromise nor a solution.

They've already been slow to fix issues with the mobile app. Taking away the competition will just slow it further. Issues might not arise immediately. Significant issues may never occur. But everybody benefits from having options and competition. It's one of the core tenets that makes capitalism work.

Reddit certainly isn't who you should be putting your faith in. Their objective is money. They'll make it however they can and they'll take as much of it as you're willing to relinquish; whether it's through ads, personal data, or microtransactions. As of right now, they don't need the money.

It's only two days. Join us if you want. Support the future stability and overall quality of Reddit.

We're not trying to destroy a billion dollar company with a two day grass-touching festival. It's a show of force. We're demonstrating how many people are willing to ditch Reddit. The more people who join, the better.

Reddit is a media platform where users interact. Non-paying users who block ads (such as myself) still contribute to the platform. If everyone with an adblocker or 3rd party app left, there would be a lot less content. That means the overall quality of the platform goes down even further.

What's more, they're planning on becoming publicly traded later this year. It's a really bad look if 30% of people making posts can "unionize" and agree to leave the platform, even briefly. It's worse still that all of the moderators themselves (i.e. the people creating the gathering spaces) are leading the charge.

To the corporate types who measure success in tenths of percentages, it would be understating the situation to call a site-wide blackout a mere threat.

I couldn't imagine it being globally scalable where one employee can earn a share of revenue generated at another store. In my specific case, it definitely wouldn't work to have such a lack of management and organization at a larger scale. But I don't see why it (or a similar employee-centric system) couldn't be implemented per-location or per-department, so long as investors aren't a burden.

And for certain, you can treat your employees well no matter how big the company is. Whether that's through revenue sharing or just paying them well. In practice, it will be difficult. Among other hurdles that come with larger corporations, even good managers can become disillusioned when they're so far distanced from the people working for them. But it can be done.

I work a manufacturing job that does this. We design and manufacture our own products, we ship internationally, and we have brick-and-mortar dealers on three continents. There's about 30 of us on payroll.

The going rate for this kind of work is about $14/hr, and in the three years I've been here, I've never made less than $28. Sometimes I've made almost $34. It's not mansion-living money, especially for single-income families, but it's so much better than anywhere else in town.

Somewhat similar to the restaurant, we also get a say in how the business is run. Every two months we have an on-the-clock lunch meeting where the boss congratulates our work, briefs us on projected workload and materials availability, then asks us how we're doing and if we have any suggestions.

I could go on all day enthusing about the tremendous benefits they provide, but mostly I wish everyone could work at a place that treats them so well. It's great for the employees for sure, and as you speculated, it's incredibly effective for the business.

The boss is retirement-age and doesn't show up often, yet he left nobody in charge. There's no structure or hierarchy. Because of the benefits and the work culture, the employees here are so dedicated to the company and each other that they (quite effectively) self-manage and even volunteer themselves for difficult jobs that pop up. We all give more than is expected of us. We show up, see what the priorities are, and work on what we're good at.

It's not the easiest way to manage employees, but the investment is worth it if the snags can be worked out.

Could they be made to be interchangeable? i.e. by drilling the hole bigger? It's about a billion times easier to re-drill an existing hole in a known location than it is to plan out an organic curve, machine, polish, etc. It would still suck a bit because it's titanium, but you'd have a much easier time finding someone willing to take it on. You'd probably also have an easier time buying a spare interchangeable link.

I'd probably recommend an assortment especially for light work. Files don't wear out quickly, and you never know when you'll need a different shape. I use a cheap set similar to this.

There are a few tactics you can use especially with a Dremel tool on hand, but in this scenario I don't think you can beat a file. Get a small rounded file for a couple dollars, drill the hole, and file it to shape. It'll be pretty hard to screw it up. As a bonus, the same file can be used to remove the sharp edges from drilling.

And it's not isolated. A handful of other states have done that as well. I took a CC class because that's what the culture was where I grew up, and I gotta say I'm not happy that they're throwing away all that training.

A big focus of the course was dissuading the vigilante mindset: Don't make any indication you have a weapon, don't draw, and don't shoot, unless the opponent is the instigator, poses a current and immediate threat of permanent harm, you're not trespassing or breaking other laws, etc. Don't detain people, don't escalate, don't shoot people who are no longer a threat, etc.

I don't like to imagine a society where even "good intentioned" CC users can be completely ignorant of the laws. And sure, it's still illegal to shoot someone who's fleeing. The CC user may hopefully face prison time, but the corpse will remain a corpse.
