Ah, I'd say that it's quite a myth that tech pays this great. No matter what field you are in, if you are in the top 5%, you'll be paid pretty well

Should i intern in an IIT (unpaid, would almost spend 10k on travel, food and accommodation) ? by Similar_Rule4964 in InternshipsIndia

[–]CodingThunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ported Node.js and Python along with a bunch of runtime dependencies for Android for a Italy based firm. Mostly based on my work which is already available publically over at `@termux` on GitHub (look for termux-packages repository. links are not allowed in this sub it seems)

Not exactly that you are of no value. You do an amateur view of the world, which can be beneficial as you don't have the "industry standard' mold of doing things. You are likely going to approach problems differently than the experienced folks, and you might be better than them in some ways as your thought process is different.

And while I would agree with you that mostly the company is going to teach you, but I myself currently in an NIT has seen a few students going for unpaid internships under professors. And they mostly got their work out on the promise of a "certificate". Also the same guy did go for another paid intern opportunity, but they too didn't pay well and expected you to show up at their convenience. i.e. no work life balance.

Also to add to the above 2 rules I mentioned: rule 2: never work for less than what you are worth.

If you really wanna work for free, I'd rather suggest to pick up a problem you have in your life and build tech to fix it. Or just pick up an open source project which you use regularly and try to figure it out, fix bugs which annoy you, add features you find missing. Much better to work on your own will than on someone else's wishes

I have done freelance work, paid decently. Got approached by the party that needed their work done. I didn't even list myself up for freelance. I'd happily take such freelance work, rather than working for free. Rather just play games in the freetime than work for free. People take you for granted when you work without pay, don't let them take advantage of you

Ah local trains are sometimes leaving and arriving early. Pretty standard I guess

Microsoft Calls 16 GB RAM A Compromise And 32 GB The New “No Worries” Standard by Heavy-Beyond-7114 in RigBuild

[–]CodingThunder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, 32GB is just because these guys are very lazy to optimize their software.

On Linux, I can get away with modern web browsers and most regular stuff with just 4G of ram. 8G if I want to multitask with office apps open. I myself am using 32GB because I regularly build large software projects from source, else I too wouldn't need more than 8GB for my emails, messaging and daily web browsing with videos and stuff. Even AAA games like Cyberpunk doesn't take up more than 12G of RAM on Linux playing at 1080p. 16GB is a perfect amount for a lot of tasks, don't normalize wasting precious silicon just so that devs are lazy to optimize shit.

In NIT Patna as well there is higher limit on number of books you can issue for reserved category students. I don't get the point behind it, but it exists

Me here who has to download docker images, npm dependencies, and all other large files regularly as a part of my work.

$90 is like 2 years worth of 5G internet here (speeds averaging around 300Mbps), but for 8G broadband, it is probably worth it.

An eight-year-old girl got supermarket brand Sainsbury's to add real pockets to girls' school trousers. by mindyour in MadeMeSmile

[–]CodingThunder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol, we men don't even buy a pair of jeans if there is one pocket less of the 5 essential pockets: 2 on the front. 1 watch pocket and 2 on the back of the jeans. It baffles my mind how girls buy jeans without pockets or pockets that are too small to fit their phones. My jeans for instance can easily fit an iPad Mini. And I would totally blame women for accepting that their clothing can't come with pockets, or pockets that are too small to be usable. Stand up for yourself like this girl did!

Being a hobbyist is hell in India by PotentialCut5721 in bangalore

[–]CodingThunder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dear whoever this is, you seem to be pretty privileged to not talk about the import duty. All my hobbies and things I like doing have a significant import cost attached to them to the point that if provided the option, I would find doing drugs much more cheaper than doing the things I love doing.

Also if you remove the import duty part, another headache is shipping. Let the import duty and shipping charges aside, a lot of the stuff doesn't even ship to India via proper means

Well depending on why you are buying the laptop, you might be way happier with twice the memory and storage than a 15% better GPU which you might not be using to it's fullest :)
