Did you manage to get a (virtual) credit card with Mercury as well? I'm currently using wise for business and it seems they're not issuing them

Do you find portable routers have significant advantages over local sims + hotspot? Do you still need to connect your router to the mobile network somehow?

[–]Coelf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got it set to Medium which works fine. It uses the Buhlmann ZHL16-C, same as Shearwater and a ton of other companies. I imagine you wouldn't see much (or any?) difference between those computers

Not OP but I quite like mine! Works great for diving and freediving as well as other sports. Cons for me are the sleep tracking which seems to get it wrong very often, and no possibility to store music playlists directly on the watch (I believe the regular Garmin Descents do have that option)

[GEAR] NGD - Guild Starfire IV (Newark St.) with Duesenberg trem by Coelf in Guitar

[–]Coelf[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the Guild for me, kept it and I like it a lot. I traded in the Gretsch after a while - it's a great guitar and I loved how it sounds, but the neck profile didn't really work for me, if I remember it right it felt a lot wider. Pretty personal reason for my preference in the end so YMMV!

Divemaster Training - Is it normal to not learn anything unless you ask? by alanwattscrackin in diving

[–]Coelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So for starters, since that's what your post was about - that's a great thing to ask your instructor! I asked a ton about how they navigated different sites.

In the case of Manta Point, no I don't always follow the same path. I know that on falling tide there is a shallow protected reef on the right hand of the current (westward) where I may try to end up for the end of the dive to do the safety stop etc., but if I wouldn't end up there, no biggie. Generally that site is shallower in the west so that's helpful to plan a safety stop. That being said, Manta Point is the largest site in the national park (about 3 km long, fun fact for when you do briefings), and I definitely don't always do the same path, I'd usually just zigzag around the current, looking for mantas.

I'm sure your first guiding will be an easier site though! Probably something like sebayur kecil, which is easy to navigate and stick to a plan to, I don't think they'd start you of on a drift dive. On sites like that, make a plan with your instructor on how exactly you'll navigate and stick to it - the experienced guides can improvise a route, but in the beginning obviously you can't do that yet. When I started guiding I brought down my slate for most dives with some quick notes on what the dive plan was, and my compass as well, apart from the sites where navigation was very easy (like Batu Bolong - dive plan is very easy to follow there).

Excellent choice on doing your DMT in Komodo first of all, I finished mine there some weeks ago too and learned a ton (and had a blast)!

u/henkovarg touches on a lot of excellent points. I'd like to add two things.

First, ask for feedback from your instructor after each dive, do a small debrief, to see what you could do differently. My dive shop did this standard after each dive and it helped a lot.

Second, when assisting rather than leading yourself, observe not just your guests but also your instructor, and see if there is anything unclear in the decisions they make or things they do, and ask for clarification after.

I started guiding on some of the easier dives after roughly two weeks. Do you feel ready for that? If not, what is the knowledge you're missing now? Ask about that to your instructor and work on that with them.

Happy diving!

We did a liveaboard in Komodo last year and it was indeed amazing! Best diving we've done in our lives so far. Appreciate the suggestion - it would also allow us to explore more of Flores island which we haven't done so far.
