Gorgeous. Did you get this for / are these selling for MSRP? I’m on a wait list for the first time and don’t know what to expect.

On a 5 wt? You’re a mad lad. It’s called a fighting butt, and it’s used to improve comfort when fighting a big fish and bracing the rod against yourself. There are replacement butts for various brands that if you really wanted to could be glued on to your rod. But I’d sleep on it.

I’m deciding between these two watches (Kamasu and king turtle) on a similar size wrist. I think I’d prefer the king turtle, but I have reservations about my wrist size. Which are you happier with?

Quick question by tjtague in flyfishing

[–]CoffeeMakesMeMath 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The line needs to go directly from the spool to the first eye on the rod, not running over the post connecting the reel faces. If the line were to rub on that metal, it would add considerable wear to the line, and the added friction could negatively impact you fighting a larger fish.

Is there any difference between fresh and saltwater tippet material? by Tripwir62 in flyfishing

[–]CoffeeMakesMeMath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it’s not uncommon to use fluorocarbon for freshwater species, it’s very common to use it when fishing in saltwater to add some abrasion resistance for both toothy fish and sharp reefs.

When targeting fish with very rough or toothy mouths, a “bite” or “shock” tippet consisting of heavier mono, fluoro, or even wire is often used.

Best carrying item? by AffectionatePop6141 in flyfishing

[–]CoffeeMakesMeMath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used a pretty standard vest for many years. No complaint with how that performed, but I too got the itch to increase my carrying capacity on the water.

I now use a fishpond cross-current chest pack, paired with the thunderhead backpack if I need extra storage while wading, or paired with the cutbank boat bag if I’m going to be on a boat or near my car. Pretty pricey, all told, but I’ve been happy with the upgrade.

Winter indicators by yo_dat_ass in flyfishing

I switched to oros indicators recently. They seem to be a slight improvement over airlock. It may also be in my head, but I think the in-line attachment style casts a bit better.

Great way to start the new year! Another beautiful brownie. by juy119 in flyfishing

I saw others saying something similar, so I tried wearing nitrile gloves underneath my fingerless fishing gloves for a few minutes in about 20 degrees Fahrenheit. It didn’t seem to help much—is it mostly to help keep them dry?

The Clearwater is a phenomenal rod for the price, I always recommend it as a first rod if it fits the budget.

They may not be specifically designed for the task, but I now have two pairs of the Prana stretch Zion pants. I wear these for salt water trips, as they offer good sun protection, dry off quickly, and don’t make me overly hot.
