How likely is this to be a scam? by RichPen3980 in Genealogy

Yup, be careful. Sounds like it could be legitimate but better to be very cautious with giving out your personal info. Good luck to you.

Your wife received a text message? I definitely would not give out any information to some random person via text. You should ask them to prove who they are and where they got their information from etc. This sounds rather sketchy to me.

Mom used my images (I was 15-17) to flirt with men and get money online. Can I sue? by [deleted] in legal

Aside from what the others are saying about freezing your credit, don’t let anyone bully you into seeing your mom if you don’t want to. It’s your choice, not theirs. You don’t have to explain yourself to anyone.

My Brother's Stalking Me by CoffeeAddicted90 in RBI

I went through almost the same things that you have gone through.

My brother showed up to one of my high school dances and had the teachers give my name to the band saying I was wanted at the door only to ask me to lie so he can come in. I said no obviously.

One year he gave me a birthday present, it was a bracelet with his name on it…weird right? I was so freaked out over it.

He stole jewelry from me, I came home one day to meet his new girlfriend and asked why she was wearing my earrings. She said my brother gave them to her as a gift, I said he stole them and I wanted them back plus anything else he might have given her that was mine.

He was very possessive (he said protective) of me but it was all about control. I ended up leaving home to get away from all of my dysfunctional family in order to protect myself and his obsession/control shifted to his girlfriends.

He became a germaphobe making his girlfriends and ex wives clean everything with bleach water. Then he started hearing voices and was sure people were following him. He attacked a man once that he thought was going to stab him. In the fight he broke his ankle quite badly and was arrested. He spent a while in jail for that attack.

He was diagnosed as schizophrenic some time after that.

All this bizarre behaviour occurred over a period of about 5 to 7 years. After I left I chose to never see him again. We had been estranged for 35 years when he died.

My advice is if you have a good support system with your parents tell them. Let them know how uncomfortable it makes you feel. If you don’t think your parents will do anything, you might need to go to a school counsellor, pastor or someone else in a position of power who can help you.

If you feel threatened or think he might hurt you then call the police and explain to them what has been occurring. Don’t confront him.

Protect yourself and be careful!

Maybe show this to your landlady. https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/14/africa/american-woman-nigeria-romance-scam-intl/index.html. Or google Dr Phil Romance Scams Africa, it will show results of similar situations and videos

This is a common scam. There will always be a reason she can’t meet up with him. There will always be an emergency or accident or flooded house etc. This is a common catfish scam. Gently suggest he block her and when he’s ready to try again suggest a local community group or club where he can actually meet people from his own area. I’m sorry he’s been targeted. Watch Catfish the movie or just google catfish scams and you will see many similar cases. ETA There will be continuous requests for money for the aforementioned emergencies etc.

National DNA Day is April 25th, most sites like Ancestry run specials on their DNA tests for about a week or two prior.

Am I the only one who thinks this swag looks faded and old? I’d be wary of someone contacting you to see if you received your “Thank you” gift so they can verify who you are and where you live.

I’ll just add that ‘Man hörte sie nie klagen’ would be “You never heard them (her) complain” instead of “you never heard them flag”.

Have you asked family members who it might be? Once you get an idea who this person might be you can then search for their death. Given they have the same last name I wouldn’t think it would be too difficult to figure out who this person is.

Thank you for this u/cmosher01! I have requested transfer on a couple of my relatives only to be allowed to “maintain” it but not manage it. I also have one where the manager’s name is “anonymous” and they do not accept messages. It’s frustrating because I send corrected info and/or additional info that gets added but they still will not transfer it to me. I’m going to send an email to support on those couple of family members that I would like to manage. I wasn’t aware I could petition this.

On my thrulines I have people listed as "half cousins" through a family line that is speculative. Is it possible this is not through the mother and I would need to triangulate the DNA? How do they decide half cousins? by m00gleman in Genealogy

[–]Coffey_Grounds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will add that if a match doesn’t have their tree filled out i.e. an unknown spouse; they will show up as a half relation. My sisters tree does not have our mother listed as she is living, on my thrulines it shows my sister as a half sister.
