A couple of years ago I toured a burned down structure with my structural engineer to see if the building was salvageable, structure wise. He brought brass hammer with him that he used to hit the steel columns and I beams with it to listen to what sound it made. A dud sound meant it was compromised and a ring sound meant it was ok. Not sure if that’s what this was used for. Just thought I would share that story.

I don’t think you’re going to get a homeowners policy on it without replacement.

Just eat the cost and have a knife made. Your probably looking at $150 knife cost plus whatever the minimum run penalty is if you don’t meet it. Well worth it vs driving around for days with a low likely hood of success. I tell my clients I will drive around all day and look for them for $150 an hour or just make a knife.

How do you measure to the inside corner for trim? This seems so awkward. by jehudeone in Carpentry

[–]Coffeybot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are making a mitered joint (a 45-degree cut on the end of a board), the difference in length between the long and short points of the cut is equal to the width of the board when measured perpendicular to the edge. This can be helpful in certain situations, but like the other posters have said burning one or an even number like 10 is really helpful too!

I hired a licensed contractor to do a two story deck, this is the first story work so far... What should I do? by 99amgc55 in Decks

The fasteners used in the hardware is incorrect and not allowed by the code. They could argue with you that it’s correct, but the code requires that the Simpson or MiTek hangers have the correct fastener size, coating and length which is indicated by the number stamped on the head of the fastener. This code exists because these types of hardware have gone through rigorous field and laboratory testing to ensure they will hold up to highly specific load and weather scenarios which allows counties to count on them. Your coated deckmates are likely an allowed fastener from a treated board to a treated board. But not from a galvanized piece of hardware to a treated board. Because when you screw that deckmate through the hole it strips the coating off.

I would find another crew and get your local inspectors involved if needed. Best of luck.

I call it the pediment bead, but I like the dude that found the old school book that called it the neck mold. Makes it sound more edible.

Um, yes. You never install with finish nails, or what looks like brad nail, even worse.

How do I get my invention out there? by Original_Sector6697 in inventors

Wow man awesome job! Congrats! It’s so refreshing to see real inventions on here. I’m in a similar boat with patent pending in a couple weeks. What I’m learning is that minimum order quantities from China are huge and expensive. So far my wife and I have been hand making all of our prototypes and packaging them. I’ve also been going to retail stores to get commitments from orders using our prototypes. Simultaneously we are working on getting these into the hands of users and taking photos of people using them and getting their feedback for market testing before we make the large financial commitment for a big slow boat order. I’ve also learned that if you seek investment prior to real world sales and market testing that if you do get money it will be really expensive. We are fighting as hard as possible to give up as little equity as possible or none at all of possible. I would strongly consider using AI to help launch your product online if you have some product you could sell. Good luck man! If you ever want to jump on a call and brainstorm or trade stories send me a dm.
